Start with Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014) if you are new to the series. It is the clearest introduction to the camera-watching, timing and resource-management loop that defines classic FNaF. Choose Help Wanted instead if you want a modern sampler of old and new scenarios, with flat-screen play available without a VR headset. Pick Security Breach after learning the basics if exploration matters most, and save Secret of the Mimic for after at least one classic game if you want the newest major standalone setting.
The short answer
The best first game depends on what you want to learn. The 2014 original teaches the series’ signature survival-horror rules with the least distraction. Help Wanted is the most flexible entry because it packages classic and original mini-games and works in either flat mode or VR. Security Breach offers a much larger, exploration-focused presentation, while Secret of the Mimic is the newest major standalone release and makes more sense once you understand the series’ foundations.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014) | First-time players who want the clearest introduction | Focused night-survival horror | Low to moderate; rules are introduced in a concentrated setting | Low; the experience centers on monitoring one location | Not presented as a VR game | Directly and thoroughly |
| Help Wanted (2019) | Players who want a broad modern sampler | Classic and original mini-games | Variable; individual challenges are short but differ in demands | Low to moderate; progression moves between scenarios | Optional; Steam states that a headset is not required | Directly in its classic scenarios |
| Security Breach (2021) | Players who prioritize movement and a larger environment | Free-roam-oriented horror | Moderate; navigation and exploration add complexity | High compared with the classic entries | Not identified as a requirement in the cited listing | Indirectly; it is a later format |
| Secret of the Mimic (2025) | Experienced players seeking the newest first-person setting | First-person exploration and horror | Moderate to high for newcomers because its setting assumes familiarity with FNaF ideas | High; the game is set around an abandoned costume manor | Optional VR support is listed on Steam | Less directly than the original |
Why the 2014 original is the safest first choice
It teaches the defining loop without extra layers
Five Nights at Freddy’s was released on Steam on August 18, 2014. Steam lists Scott Cawthon as both developer and publisher and identifies it as a single-player game. Its focused night-survival structure makes the central FNaF habits easy to recognize: check information, judge timing, manage limited resources and react before an approaching threat reaches you.

That concentration matters for beginners. You are not first learning a large map, a collection of unrelated mini-games or a newer setting while also trying to understand why the series became famous. The original gives you one compact problem to solve repeatedly, so each failure teaches a specific lesson about observation, timing or conservation.
#1 Best Overall
- Two years of Freddy - The core collection includes the first five mainline titles in the fnaf universe that started it all: five nights at freddy's, five nights at freddy's 2, five nights at freddy's 3, five nights at freddy's 4, and five nights at freddy's: sister location.
- celebrate with new friends - meet a colorful cast of robotic companions that are ready to Welcome you to the fazbear family including Bonnie, chica, Foxy and Freddy fazbear himself.
- hide and seek - survive the night by Monitoring the suspicious activity of the haunted animations that come alive at night. They can run, but you can hide.
- console Exclusive features - A new achievement and trophy system as well as optional cheats that give new reasons to revisit fazbear Entertainment
Its difficulty rises in a readable way
The original is tense, but its format is predictable enough to support learning. Early nights establish the basic relationship between surveillance and survival; later nights test whether you can apply those rules under pressure. This makes it a better tutorial than a game that presents many different formats at once.
Who should not start here
Choose another entry first only if you already know that a fixed-location survival game will feel too restrictive. Players who mainly want to walk through a large environment may enjoy Security Breach more, but starting there means learning a later, more exploration-oriented design rather than the series’ original grammar.
What makes Help Wanted the best modern gateway
A sampler rather than one continuous format
Steam describes Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted as “a collection of classic and original mini-games set in the Five Nights universe.” That structure lets you sample several kinds of FNaF challenge in one package. Classic scenarios show how the earlier games work, while original mini-games provide a more modern presentation.
Because each activity is relatively contained, Help Wanted can be a good choice when you want variety or shorter sessions. The trade-off is that it is less consistent as a tutorial. A mini-game may teach one rule well, then move you into a different task with a different rhythm. If you want to understand the foundational loop in a single, sustained arc, the 2014 game remains clearer.
You can play without a VR headset
Help Wanted was released on May 28, 2019. Steel Wool Studios developed it, and ScottGames published it. Steam explicitly states that a VR headset is not required: the game supports flat-screen play as well as VR. That makes it the practical recommendation for someone who wants the modern presentation but does not own compatible VR hardware.

- Fun, fast, competitive game where players take on the roles of the iconic animatronics stalking the pizzeria at night.
- Compete to collect pizza and cake, use your unique abilities, and out-scare the other animatronics.
- Suspenseful push-your-luck gameplay keeps everyone guessing until one player captures the guard!
- Includes four detailed, painted figures of Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Freddy Fazbear!
- Packaged in a thematic pizza box with a window to display the figures.
VR is an optional way to increase presence, not a prerequisite for accessing the collection. Buy or install the version that matches your platform and use flat mode if you are playing with a conventional monitor or television. If you later acquire compatible hardware, the same overall package can serve as a second, more immersive pass.
When Help Wanted should come before the original
- You want a variety of short scenarios instead of one tightly focused campaign.
- You want to try FNaF in flat mode now and possibly add VR later.
- You prefer a modern presentation but still want access to classic-style challenges.
If none of those points describes you, the original is still the more efficient first lesson.

A later, larger format
Steam lists Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach as a ScottGames release dated December 16, 2021. Compared with the classic fixed-location games, it is oriented toward free-roam horror and a larger environment. The appeal is movement: you explore, navigate spaces and handle threats across a broader setting rather than managing one central station through a sequence of compact nights.
That scale changes what the game asks you to learn. Instead of concentrating almost entirely on surveillance, timing and a limited resource loop, you must also understand where to go, how spaces connect and how exploration affects risk. Those are valid FNaF skills, but they are not the clearest explanation of the franchise’s original identity.
Where Ruin fits
Steel Wool identifies Ruin as downloadable content for the Security Breach base game. Treat it as an expansion to that setting, not as a replacement for the base game or a separate starting point. Playing Security Breach first gives you the environment and premise that Ruin builds on.

- Experience the heart-pounding adventure of a beloved entry in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, Into the Pit.
- Solve satisfying puzzles intertwined with an adrenaline-fueled story.
- Immerse yourself in a narrative experience where you try to save your friends, your family, and your own life.
- Uncover secrets that span decades and discover different endings, as you escape the clutches of the animatronic creatures wreaking havoc across time.
- Includes a download code for the official game soundtrack.
The right order for an exploration-first player
- Play the 2014 original or the classic-style material in Help Wanted so the series’ basic survival logic is familiar.
- Move to Security Breach when you want a larger, freer environment.
- Play Ruin after the base game because it is tied to that game’s setting.
Secret of the Mimic: the newest major standalone entry
What it is
Steel Wool’s announcement places Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic in an abandoned Murray’s Costume Manor. The central threat, the Mimic, is described as a prototype endoskeleton that can adapt to different costumes and become any character, including whatever you fear most.

Steel Wool later announced Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch launches beginning December 16, 2025. Those dates describe the initial and subsequent platform availability; check the store page for the edition and platform you intend to use.
Why it is not the default beginner game
Secret of the Mimic is built around first-person exploration and horror rather than the original’s tightly bounded night-survival lesson. Steam’s listing includes optional VR support, but VR is not the reason to choose it first. The bigger issue is context: newcomers may have a harder time appreciating its newer setting and ideas without first seeing how FNaF’s earlier games use surveillance, uncertainty and pursuit.
Choose it first only if your priority is the newest major standalone presentation and you are comfortable learning a series through its later form. For most players, one classic entry beforehand makes the transition more understandable without requiring a complete marathon.

If you want modern variety
Start with Help Wanted in flat mode. You get classic and original mini-games in one package, and Steam confirms that a VR headset is unnecessary.
If you want to explore a larger environment
Play the original or Help Wanted first, then choose Security Breach. Follow it with Ruin if you want the connected downloadable content.
If you want the newest release
Play at least one classic entry, then choose Secret of the Mimic. This preserves the appeal of the newest setting while giving you enough background to recognize what has changed.
If you are buying around hardware
- No VR headset: The original works as a conventional game, and Help Wanted can be played in flat mode.
- VR owner: Help Wanted offers VR alongside flat play; Steam also lists optional VR support for Secret of the Mimic.
- Console-only player: Confirm the platform listing before purchase. Secret of the Mimic began on PlayStation 5 and later expanded to Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch from December 16, 2025.
Recommended play paths
First-time player who wants the series in the least confusing order
- Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 3
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 4
- Then move into later entries according to your preferred format: mini-games, free-roam exploration or newer first-person horror.
This is release order for the early numbered games, not a claim that every later story event follows a simple chronology.
Short modern sampler
- Play Help Wanted in flat mode.
- Use VR later only if you already own compatible hardware and want the additional immersion.
- Continue to Security Breach or Secret of the Mimic according to whether you prefer exploration or the newest standalone setting.
Exploration-first route
- Learn the classic loop in the original or selected classic scenarios in Help Wanted.
- Play Security Breach.
- Add Ruin after the base game.
Newest-release route
- Play one classic entry, preferably the 2014 original.
- Move to Secret of the Mimic for its first-person setting and newer presentation.
- Return to Help Wanted if you want a compact tour of classic and original scenarios.
Release order versus lore order
Release order is the least confusing route for a new player because the games introduce their mechanics and presentation in stages. A lore-first route is a separate, spoiler-heavy project. The available information does not establish one canonical story-order path for every spin-off, downloadable-content release or fan-project-adjacent title, so do not assume that rearranging games by suspected chronology will produce a cleaner first experience.
Best Value
- 2 Years Of Freddy - The Core Collection includes the first 5 titles that started it all: Five Nights at Freddy's, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Five Nights at Freddy's 3, Five Nights at Freddy's 4, and Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location
- Celebrate with new friends - Meet a colorful cast of robotic companions that are ready to Welcome you to the fazbear family including bonnie, chica, foxy and Freddy fazbear himself
- Hide and seek - Survive the night by Monitoring the suspicious activity of the haunted animatronics that come alive at night; They can run, but you can hide
- Console exclusive features - A new achievement and trophy system as well as optional cheats that give new reasons to revisit fazbear entertainment
If story interpretation is your main goal, decide before starting whether you are willing to encounter spoilers and to accept that some connections are easier to understand after release-order play. If your goal is simply to learn how FNaF feels, use the gameplay-based routes above instead.
Common first-game mistakes
Starting with the biggest game because it looks most approachable
A larger map does not automatically make a better tutorial. Security Breach is the better choice for exploration, but its free-roam structure can obscure the compact survival loop that defines the original games.
Assuming Help Wanted requires VR
It does not. Steam explicitly lists flat and VR play and says a headset is not required. Choose flat mode unless you specifically want VR.
Playing Ruin before Security Breach
Because Ruin is DLC for Security Breach, the base game is the sensible prerequisite for understanding its setting.
Expecting every FNaF game to teach the same skills
The original emphasizes surveillance, timing and resource management. Help Wanted distributes those ideas across mini-games. Security Breach and Secret of the Mimic place more weight on movement and exploration. Pick the entry whose format matches the skill you want to practice.
Final recommendation by reader type
| Your priority | First game | What to play next |
|---|---|---|
| Learn classic FNaF correctly | Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014) | Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, then the other early numbered games |
| Try many scenarios without buying VR hardware | Help Wanted in flat mode | VR mode later, or Security Breach for free-roam play |
| Explore a larger environment | The original or Help Wanted first, then Security Breach | Ruin after the base game |
| Play the newest major standalone release | One classic game first, then Secret of the Mimic | Help Wanted for a broader series sampler |
For most newcomers, the final decision is simple: buy Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014) if you want the purest introduction, or Help Wanted if you want a modern, flexible sampler that works without VR. Choose Security Breach and Secret of the Mimic for their distinct exploration-focused formats after you know what classic FNaF is trying to teach.
