Before an AI agent opens a SaaS account without a person handling each step, make sure the service is authorized, the task is low risk, the agent has a distinct and limited identity, human approval is required at consequential boundaries, and its activity can be monitored and reversed. If you cannot understand, monitor or contain the agent’s actions, it is not ready for deployment, the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warns.
1. Is the service authorized, and does a person own the agent?
Account creation is the start of a managed service relationship and identity—not just a browser task. Before proceeding, establish who is authorized to select the SaaS provider, who owns the agent, who approves its access, who monitors it, who responds to incidents, and who can stop it. The NCSC recommends establishing these responsibilities before connecting an agent to real systems or data (NCSC guidance on adopting agentic AI).

2. Is the task bounded, low risk and suitable for autonomy?
Write down what the agent may do, in which service, with which data, and for how long. A pilot is a better fit when the task is repetitive, well understood, low risk and does not involve sensitive data. Decide what the agent should do if it encounters an unexpected page, request or condition: a safe default is to stop and ask rather than improvise.

Multi-agency Australian guidance recommends low-risk, non-sensitive use and warns against broad or unrestricted access to sensitive data or critical systems (Australian guidance on careful adoption of agentic AI services). AWS also describes how excessive autonomy and broad tool access can lead to unintended operations, unexpected tool chaining or privilege escalation (AWS Prescriptive Guidance on agent security).
3. Will the account have a distinct identity and minimum permissions?
Make the account identifiable as an agent, separate from a person’s account and from unrelated automations. Limit its permissions to the resources and actions needed for the approved task. Avoid shared, long-lived secrets; prefer credentials that expire or can be revoked.

AWS recommends distinct agent and human permissions, attributable audit trails, short-lived credentials and continuing permission validation (AWS Agentic AI Lens: agent security). The NCSC’s SaaS guidance says high-risk service identities should require administrative approval, have their scope reviewed and lose integrations they no longer need (NCSC guidance on using SaaS securely). Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance for AI agents is another reference for limiting access (Microsoft Learn: least privilege for AI agents).
4. Where must the agent stop for a human decision?
Set approval rules before the workflow runs. The agent should not be allowed to expand its own access, accept consequential terms, expose sensitive information or make a high-impact change without approval. Multi-agency guidance recommends that designers or operators define when approval is required, with prior human approval for high-impact actions (Australian guidance on careful adoption of agentic AI services).

Apply that rule to the actual signup flow: your organization must decide which fields, permissions and consequences require a person’s decision. The cited guidance does not list every SaaS registration step, so set thresholds according to your policies and the service’s effects.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Can an operator see, stop and recover from what the agent does?
Keep logs that distinguish agent activity from human activity, and monitor both the agent and connected systems. Before deployment, identify who can interrupt the workflow, disable the agent’s identity, invalidate its credentials, review changes and reverse or remediate unintended effects. The Australian guidance calls for monitoring, interruption, auditing and reversibility; AWS likewise emphasizes attribution and continuing permission validation (Australian guidance on careful adoption of agentic AI services; AWS Agentic AI Lens: agent security).

Test the stop and recovery steps before relying on them. A policy that names an approver is not enough if nobody can quickly revoke the account or determine what it changed.

These five checks are a practical synthesis of government and cloud-provider security guidance, not a single authority’s published checklist. Together, they help answer the real question: can the organization authorize, constrain, oversee and, if necessary, undo this agent’s work? The NCSC’s article, published May 15, 2026, puts the readiness test plainly: “If you cannot understand, monitor or contain an agent’s actions, it is not ready for deployment” (NCSC, “Thinking carefully before adopting agentic AI”).
