Fitness Tracker Calories: How Much Can You Trust Your Watch’s Burn Estimate?

Your fitness tracker estimates how much energy you use; it does not directly measure the calories you burn. Its calorie number can be useful as a rough activity log, but accuracy varies with the device, activity and testing conditions. Treat it as an estimate—not a precise count of exercise calories or your daily energy expenditure.

What a tracker’s calorie number actually means

Wearables use sensor data and an algorithm to estimate energy expenditure. The displayed figure is therefore a model-based estimate, not a direct reading of calories burned. That distinction matters if you are using the number to decide exactly how much energy a workout used or to account for exercise in a calorie balance.

There is no reliable universal correction—such as subtracting a fixed percentage—that turns a tracker’s estimate into an individual’s true burn. The available reviews also do not establish one current tracker model as universally accurate for calories.

How large can the errors be?

A 2024 living umbrella review summarized a meta-analysis of 64 studies in which primary-study energy-expenditure errors ranged from −21.27% to 14.76%. That range describes variation across the included study findings; it is not a predicted error band for every tracker, wearer or workout. The review authors highlighted substantial differences among studies, making a single device-wide accuracy verdict inappropriate.

A separate 2020 meta-analysis covered 60 studies and 104 effect sizes. It found accuracy varied by activity and substantial heterogeneity for many monitors. Taken together, these findings support caution rather than a blanket claim that all trackers are equally inaccurate—or that any one device is dependable in every setting.

Why the activity and sensor setup matter

A device’s performance in one task does not establish how well it estimates energy use in another. Activity type, device and study protocol all affect results. Adding heart-rate or heat sensing to accelerometry reduced error for most activity types in one meta-analysis, but accuracy still varied by activity. More sensors can help in some circumstances; they do not guarantee a universally correct calorie total.

Strength training is especially hard to count precisely

Resistance exercise combines short, intense efforts with anaerobic energy contributions. A 2024 systematic scoping review noted that indirect calorimetry alone may miss the glycolytic contribution, complicating comparisons between a wearable and a reference measurement.

In that review, four of five wearable validation studies found poor correlations or significant differences from indirect calorimetry. Mean absolute percentage errors ranged from 15.1% to 57.0% across the included study settings. Monitors both under- and overestimated expenditure, so the evidence does not justify assuming that every tracker always undercounts lifting.

How researchers test calorie estimates

Validation means comparing a wearable’s estimate with a criterion method. Different methods answer different questions, so a result from a controlled lab session should not automatically be treated as a guarantee of accuracy during ordinary daily life.

  • Indirect calorimetry: Commonly used to assess structured laboratory activity. It measures gas exchange, but its suitability depends on the activity and protocol; for resistance exercise, it may not capture all anaerobic energy contributions.
  • Room calorimeters: Enclosed-room measurements have also been used in wearable validation studies, under controlled conditions.
  • Doubly labelled water: Used as a criterion for energy expenditure in free-living conditions, rather than as a direct test of a single structured workout.

Studies also differ in their protocols, reference methods, devices—including firmware—and reported outcomes. Those differences help explain why findings cannot be collapsed into a simple ranking or a dependable personal adjustment factor.

How to use the number without overtrusting it

  • Use calorie burn as a rough record of activity, not a precise measurement of what a workout or day cost in energy.
  • Do not assume that an estimate that seems plausible for one activity transfers to another; validation results vary by task and device.
  • Be particularly cautious about treating a strength-training calorie figure as exact.
  • Do not apply a fixed correction percentage or select a tracker on the assumption that it is the current best for calories. The cited reviews do not establish either.

The evidence spans reviews published from 2018 through 2024, and the 2020 meta-analysis searched for studies only through 2017. Device generations and algorithms may have changed since the validation studies, but the cited evidence does not show that newer models have resolved the limitations. Without model-specific validation, a newer release alone is not proof of accurate calorie estimates.
