If a Fitbit Edge or Air is not syncing, keep it beside your phone, turn off Battery Saver and Bedtime mode, verify the Google Health app’s permissions, then toggle Bluetooth and manually sync. If that fails, charge and restart both devices, update their software, remove competing pairings, and add the Fitbit again through Google Health.
These devices use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), so a short-range connection, unrestricted background access, current software, and an adequate charge are all required. Follow the sequence below in order; the later steps remove saved pairings only after simpler fixes have been tried.

What has to work for a Fitbit sync
Google says Fitbit trackers, watches, and Fitbit Aria Air use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to sync with phones and tablets. BLE is designed for low power, but it is a nearby radio link rather than an internet connection by itself. The Fitbit must be close enough for the phone to maintain the link, while the Google Health app needs permission to use that link and internet access to upload or refresh information.
Opening Google Health while the Fitbit is nearby normally starts an automatic sync. A sync can still appear stuck when the phone has restricted background data, Bluetooth is in a bad state, another phone is holding the pairing, or the device is too low on power to communicate reliably.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Proximity: Keep the Edge or Air within a few feet of the phone during setup and troubleshooting. Do not leave it in another room or inside a drawer.
- Phone connection: Bluetooth must be enabled. Wi-Fi or cellular data must also be available when Google Health needs to transfer information to your account.
- App access: Android can block the permissions Google Health uses to discover nearby devices and maintain a connection.
- Power: A nearly empty battery or a poor cable connection can interrupt a sync attempt.
- One active pairing: A Fitbit paired with another nearby phone, tablet, or secondary device may not respond to the phone you are troubleshooting.
Battery Saver and Bedtime mode are especially easy to overlook. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says both modes limit background data connectivity, so an app that appears open may not be allowed to communicate with the Fitbit until those modes are disabled.
Fitbit Edge and Air: the differences that affect troubleshooting
The exact behavior depends on which product you own. Do not assume that a screen-equipped Edge and a screenless Air have identical controls, charging hardware, or feature support.
| Comparison point | Google Fitbit Edge | Google Fitbit Air |
|---|---|---|
| Design and controls | Screen-equipped wearable with onboard controls and a display. | Screenless design; interaction and status depend more heavily on the phone and app. |

The Edge’s October 27, 2026 shelf date is later than Google’s October 12, 2026 announcement. If you are attempting setup before that date, confirm that you actually have a retail unit and that your Google Health version supports it. The seven-day figures are maximum estimates, not a guarantee that a device will remain connected for seven days without charging.
Use this recovery sequence first
Perform these steps in order. After each step, open Google Health with the Fitbit beside the phone and check whether the latest reading appears. Stop when syncing resumes; unnecessary unpairing creates extra setup work.
-
Put the Fitbit next to the phone
Place the Edge or Air within a few feet of the phone. Keep both devices out in the open while testing, rather than in a bag, drawer, or another room. Open Google Health and wait briefly for the automatic sync to begin.
-
Turn off Battery Saver and Bedtime mode
Disable Battery Saver and Bedtime mode on the phone before retrying. These modes can limit background data connectivity, preventing Google Health from maintaining the BLE session or uploading the result even when Bluetooth appears enabled.

Check Android permissions
On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Google Health > Permissions. Allow Location and Nearby devices for Android 12 and newer. Return to Google Health after changing either permission and try the sync again. If a permission is set to ask every time, choose the allow option when prompted during discovery.

Reset Bluetooth and confirm data service
Turn Bluetooth off, wait three seconds, and turn it back on. Confirm that the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data. BLE handles the local device link, but Google Health still needs an internet path to update your account and retrieve current status.
-
Place the Fitbit on its charger
Connect the Edge or Air to its charger before another attempt. A low battery or an intermittent cable can make the device disappear during discovery. Leave it connected long enough to establish a stable charging indication, then keep it nearby while opening Google Health.
-
Start a manual sync
In Google Health, open the Today tab and pull down on the page. Google also documents Connections > Sync as a manual-sync path. A successful manual refresh should update the device’s recent data or connection status.
-
Restart the phone
Restart the phone completely, unlock it, turn Bluetooth back on if necessary, and open Google Health with the Fitbit still close by. A restart clears a stalled Bluetooth service without deleting the existing pairing.

Install pending updates
Update the phone’s operating system, Google Health, and the Fitbit firmware when updates are offered. Reopen the app after each update and run a manual sync. A phone and app on different release levels can fail during discovery even when the hardware is functioning.
-
Remove secondary-device pairings
Check nearby phones and tablets that have used the Fitbit. Uninstall Google Health from nearby secondary devices and unpair the Fitbit there. Also remove other Fitbit devices from Google Health and from the phone’s Bluetooth list. This prevents another saved connection from taking priority.
-
Forget and add the Fitbit again
In Google Health, disconnect the affected device. Then open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the Fitbit, and choose Forget or Remove. Return to Google Health > Connections > Add device and complete pairing from inside the app. Do not pair it only from the operating system’s Bluetooth screen; Google Health needs to finish the device setup.

Reinstall Google Health only as a final software step
If the previous steps fail, uninstall Google Health, restart the phone, reinstall the current version, grant Location and Nearby devices permissions on Android, and add the Fitbit again through Connections > Add device. Have your Google Account credentials available before removing the app.
Android permissions and settings in detail
Location permission
Android uses Location permission as part of nearby-device discovery for some Bluetooth workflows. In Settings > Apps > Google Health > Permissions, set Location to an allowed state. If the phone offers a choice between while-in-use and a more restricted option, use the setting Google Health requests during setup and keep the phone’s Location service enabled while pairing.
Nearby devices permission
On Android 12 and newer, enable Nearby devices in the same permissions screen. Without it, Google Health may not see an Edge or Air even though Bluetooth is switched on in quick settings.

Battery and background restrictions
Turn off Battery Saver and Bedtime mode while diagnosing the problem. If the phone has a separate per-app battery restriction screen, make sure Google Health is not being forcibly stopped or prevented from running in the background. The documented minimum fix is to disable the two modes; avoid changing unrelated system settings until that test is complete.
Internet connection
Verify either Wi-Fi or cellular data by opening another service on the phone. Bluetooth can connect locally while an unavailable internet connection prevents Google Health from completing account synchronization. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, briefly test with cellular data, or reverse that test if cellular service is weak.
iPhone and iPad checks
The Edge is listed as compatible with iOS 16.4 and newer devices. Keep the Fitbit near the iPhone or iPad, enable Bluetooth, use a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection, and install any pending Google Health and operating-system updates. Start the connection from Google Health rather than adding the product only through the system Bluetooth menu.
Apple’s menus differ by iOS release, so labels can change. If Google Health does not discover the Fitbit, close and reopen the app, toggle Bluetooth off for three seconds and back on, then repeat the manual-sync test. If the Fitbit is saved under Bluetooth but Google Health cannot use it, forget that entry and add the device from Google Health > Connections > Add device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Charging problems that look like sync failures
A tracker that is not charging cannot reliably complete a wireless connection. Check that the connector is fully seated and that the phone’s charging indication is not being mistaken for the Fitbit’s status. Use the cable supplied with the Air. For the Edge, Google lists a USB-C charging cable; if the original is lost or damaged, choose a replacement cable specifically identified as compatible with the exact Edge model rather than a generic cable with an uncertain fit.

Google’s battery guidance says not to charge the Air below 32°F (0°C) or above 113°F (45°C). Move the device to a room-temperature environment before charging if it has been left in a very cold car, direct sun, or another hot location. Do not continue repeated pairing attempts while the device is warming or cooling outside that range.

- No charging indication: Reseat the cable, try a known-good power source, and inspect the connector for debris or damage.
- Charges but disconnects: Keep it on the charger during the first manual sync and repeat the Bluetooth reset.
- Only one cable works: Replace the damaged or incorrect cable with a model-specific cable; a physically similar cable may not provide the correct connection.
- Battery drops unusually fast: Complete the software and pairing steps before judging battery life. A repeated discovery loop can consume power until the old pairing is removed.
Symptoms and the most likely fix
| What you see | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Google Health shows no Fitbit at all. | Bluetooth is off, permissions are blocked, the device is too far away, or another phone owns the connection. | Bring it close, enable Bluetooth, allow Location and Nearby devices on Android, and remove secondary-device pairings. |
| The Fitbit appears, but data is old. | Background connectivity is restricted or the app has not run a manual sync. | Disable Battery Saver and Bedtime mode, confirm Wi-Fi or cellular data, then pull down on Today or use Connections > Sync. |
| Sync starts and then stops. | Low battery, an unstable cable, or a stalled Bluetooth service. | Put the Fitbit on its charger, toggle Bluetooth off for three seconds, restart the phone and Fitbit, and retry. |
| Pairing works only from phone settings. | The app has not completed its own device registration. | Forget the operating-system Bluetooth entry and add the Fitbit through Google Health > Connections > Add device. |
| A second phone receives the data. | The Fitbit remains paired with a nearby secondary device. | Unpair it there and remove that device’s Google Health installation or saved Fitbit entry. |
| The device will not charge before setup. | Damaged, incompatible, or poorly seated cable; temperature outside the charging range. | Use the supplied or exact model-specific replacement cable, reseat it, and charge at room temperature. |
How to confirm that syncing is fixed
-
Leave the Fitbit beside the phone and open Google Health.
-
Check the Today tab for a current reading or connection timestamp.
-
Pull down to run one manual sync, or use Connections > Sync.

Move the Fitbit a short distance away and return it to the phone to verify that the connection recovers without a new pairing.
-
After the test, re-enable any battery-management mode you normally use, then check whether background syncing remains reliable. If it stops again only when Battery Saver or Bedtime mode is active, those modes are the trigger rather than a defective pairing.
When the problem is probably not a Bluetooth setting
If the Edge or Air remains undiscoverable after charging, permission checks, restarts, updates, removal of competing pairings, and a clean add-device process, record the exact model, phone operating-system version, Google Health version, and the point at which setup fails. That information distinguishes a hardware or cable problem from an account or app issue when you contact official support.
Do not repeatedly factory-reset the Fitbit while troubleshooting. A reset does not repair a missing Android permission, an active secondary pairing, an unsupported phone version, or a damaged charging cable, and it adds another setup cycle. Use the documented restart and re-pair sequence first.

Quick Recap
Keeping future syncs reliable
- Open Google Health near the Fitbit after charging or after a long period away from the phone.
- Keep the phone’s operating system, Google Health, and Fitbit firmware current.
- Do not leave the Fitbit paired with several nearby phones or tablets.
- Charge with the supplied or model-specific cable and avoid the Air’s prohibited temperature range.
- Remember that the Edge’s listed compatibility starts at Android 11 and iOS 16.4, while features can vary by region and device.
- Use a manual pull-down sync when you need an immediate confirmation instead of waiting for background synchronization.
