Use Google Fit if you want a general activity app that can draw data from Wear OS, Health Connect or Apple Health. Use Google Health—the app that replaced Fitbit on May 19, 2026—if you use a Fitbit device or Pixel Watch and want that hardware’s native tracking experience. Neither service has established a universal accuracy advantage: Google’s published materials describe features and connections, not an independent head-to-head test. Your device, phone and preferred data-sharing system should decide.
The name “Fitbit app” changed in 2026
On May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app became the Google Health app. Google’s Health Help Center says, “Starting May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app will become the Google Health app.” The change matters when you search for setup instructions or support: a current Fitbit user is generally opening Google Health, not a separate app that continues unchanged under the Fitbit name.

People with legacy Fitbit accounts had to move those accounts to a Google Account to continue using the app. Google Health’s documented minimums are Android 11 or later, iOS 16.4 or later, and a Google Account. Existing Fitbit hardware and Pixel Watch users therefore should evaluate Google Health when they compare “Fitbit” with Google Fit.

Google Fit and Google Health: what each app is for
Google Fit is a broad activity dashboard
Google Fit is designed for general activity tracking. Google’s Wear OS documentation states: “Your Wear OS watch can help you track fitness info, like steps taken, calories burned, heart rate, and workouts.” Fit can also receive data from connected apps. That makes it a reasonable starting point if your priority is a cross-device activity record rather than a particular wearable brand.
On Android, Google Fit can connect through Health Connect. On iPhone, Google Fit can connect with Apple Health. The source app or watch still determines which measurements exist; a connection does not guarantee that every field will appear in Fit.
Google Health is the current Fitbit and Pixel Watch experience
Google Health is the successor to the Fitbit app and the relevant companion for Fitbit trackers and Pixel Watch devices. Google’s device documentation lists Fitbit and Pixel Watch products as sources of data for Google Account users. A Fitbit Charge 6 or a Pixel Watch can therefore collect wearable measurements for Google Health, but buying either device is optional: both apps can provide basic activity tracking without a wearable.

Google says the app can link data from “many of your favorite health and fitness apps and devices,” but partner-provided metrics vary. A connected source may supply steps while withholding another measurement, and a Google Health feature may not use every metric that a partner shares.

Choose according to the watch or tracker you already own
If you use a Fitbit tracker
Start with Google Health. It is the current Fitbit application, and the migration to a Google Account is part of continued access for legacy accounts. Using Google Fit as your main screen may be possible through Android’s health-data bridge, but Google Fit will not replace the Fitbit-specific experience or guarantee that every Fitbit metric transfers.
If you use a Pixel Watch
Google Health is the natural home for the watch’s Fitbit-derived tracking experience. Google Fit can still be useful if you want a general activity view or need to combine information with apps that publish through Health Connect. Decide which app should be your primary dashboard before enabling multiple write permissions, or you may see overlapping records.
If you use another Wear OS watch
Google Fit has the clearest documented fit: Google says a Wear OS watch can record steps, calories burned, heart rate and workouts. Check your watch maker’s current software and data-sharing options because the watch, not Fit alone, determines which sensors and workout fields are available.

- Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
- Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
If you do not own a wearable
Either app can be used for basic phone-based activity tracking. Choose Google Fit for a simple, general-purpose activity record, or choose Google Health if you expect to add a Fitbit or Pixel Watch later. A tracker is optional rather than a prerequisite for either app.
Choose according to your phone and data hub
Android with Health Connect
Health Connect is the central Android handoff. Google Fit can read and share supported data through it, and Google Health can use it for third-party connections. Health Connect gives you a place to decide which apps may read or write each category.
- Install or update the app you want to use, then open its settings for connected apps or Health Connect.
- Open Android’s Health Connect settings and review the app list.
- Grant only the data categories you need—for example, steps or workouts—and leave unrelated categories off.
- Return to the app and confirm that a recent reading appears with the expected source.
- If two apps write the same category, inspect the source or priority controls in Health Connect so duplicate entries do not become your default record.
Google’s Fit documentation says Fit keeps a copy of Health Connect data that it accesses. Disconnecting an app stops future access but does not necessarily erase copies already stored by that app; review each service’s deletion controls when you need removal.

iPhone with Apple Health
Both Google Fit and Google Health can connect with Apple Health on iPhone. Apple Health remains the permission layer, so you should configure access there rather than assuming that installing an app automatically shares all categories.

- Open the app’s connection or data-sharing settings and choose Apple Health.
- In the Apple Health permission screen, enable only the measurements the app needs.
- Check whether the app is allowed to write as well as read; those are separate permissions.
- Open a recent workout or step record and verify its source in Apple Health.
- Revisit Apple Health permissions after an iOS or app update, especially if a previously visible metric stops synchronizing.
The available documentation confirms the Apple Health connection but does not promise identical metric coverage between iPhone, Android and every partner device.
How to connect Google Fit to other health data
Google Fit’s connected-app model lets another service contribute data, subject to the permissions and fields that service publishes. Use this sequence when setting up a new source:
- In Google Fit, open the profile or settings area and select the connected-apps or Health Connect option shown by your current version.
- Choose the partner app or Health Connect, then read the requested categories before approving.
- Allow only the categories you actually plan to view in Fit.
- Wait for the partner to publish a new reading; historical backfill is controlled by the partner and may not occur.
- Check the data-source details in Fit. If a category is absent, confirm that the partner supports it rather than repeatedly reconnecting.
Google’s connected-app help says you can review the types of data an app requests and disconnect it. Use that review screen when a partner asks for broader access than your use case requires.

- Install Google Health on Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later and sign in with a Google Account.
- If you are moving from a legacy Fitbit account, follow Google’s account-migration flow before relying on the app for new records.
- Pair your Fitbit device or Pixel Watch using the device setup flow, then allow the health categories you want stored.
- For another app or device, select the third-party connection option and choose Health Connect on Android or Apple Health on iPhone.
- Open a recent measurement and identify its source. A successful connection can still omit metrics that the partner does not share or that a Google Health feature does not use.
When a source appears connected but no values arrive, first check the source device’s own synchronization status and permissions. Then inspect Health Connect or Apple Health for read/write access before removing and re-adding the connection.

Does Fitbit work with Google Fit?
There is no promise that every Fitbit field will flow directly into Google Fit. On Android, the practical route is a supported Health Connect connection: Google Health and Google Fit can each use Health Connect, while the Fitbit or Google Health side determines which data it publishes. The result may include some categories but not others.
On iPhone, Google Fit and Google Health can each use Apple Health, but the same limitation applies: Apple Health permissions and the originating app control the available fields. Treat the connection as selective data sharing, not a full clone of one app inside the other.
Metrics, duplicate records and missing data
Why a connected metric may be absent
- The device or partner does not publish that category.
- The app has read permission but not write permission, or the reverse.
- The metric is available in the source app but is not used by the destination app’s feature.
- The source has not completed synchronization or has no recent measurement.
- The phone’s operating-system version falls below the documented requirement for Google Health.
How to troubleshoot without losing data
- Record the time of the newest value in the source app.
- Confirm Bluetooth, account sign-in and the source device’s synchronization status.
- Review the exact category permissions in Health Connect or Apple Health.
- Check the destination app’s connected-app list and reconnect only after permissions are correct.
- Compare a new reading rather than expecting all historical data to backfill.
- Keep the source app installed until the destination displays the records you need; deleting it too early can remove your easiest way to verify the original data.
Privacy and account controls
Google Fit’s documentation says Fit data is stored on Google’s servers and backed up with your Google Account. It also describes controls for reviewing requested data and disconnecting connected apps. Health Connect provides Android controls for deciding which apps can access shared categories. These are product descriptions, not an independent security audit or a comparative privacy score.
Before connecting a partner, inspect the requested categories and whether the app can read, write or both. Revoke access in the relevant hub when you stop using the partner. Remember that revoking access prevents future sharing; it does not automatically remove copies that an app already stored, so use that app’s deletion settings as well.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Google Health when your primary device is a Fitbit tracker or Pixel Watch, you want the current Fitbit-derived experience, or you are prepared to use a Google Account after the 2026 migration.
- Choose Google Fit when you want a general activity dashboard, use a Wear OS watch, or plan to assemble data through Health Connect on Android or Apple Health on iPhone.
- Use both deliberately when one app is the best device companion and the other is the dashboard you prefer. Limit write permissions to avoid competing records and verify which source supplies each metric.
- Do not choose by claimed accuracy unless you have a test that matches your device and activity. The published materials provide no independent head-to-head accuracy result.
What to verify before switching
List the measurements you actually rely on—such as steps, heart rate, workouts or calories—then check whether your specific device and partner expose each one through the intended bridge. Confirm your phone meets Google Health’s Android 11 or iOS 16.4 minimum, make sure your Google Account is ready if you are migrating Fitbit data, and export or retain any records you cannot afford to lose before changing permissions.
Finally, test one fresh activity. A new walk or workout is more informative than an empty historical chart: it reveals whether the watch, phone, health hub and destination app are all aligned. If that test succeeds and the source is clearly labeled, you have a dependable setup for the ecosystem you chose.
