Hamburg-based game studio Fishlabs has announced a workforce reduction affecting employees in both development and support. The Plaion subsidiary said changing project requirements, along with the needs of clients and internal teams, prompted a reassessment of its structure. Fishlabs has not disclosed how many jobs are being eliminated.
What Fishlabs announced
Fishlabs said the reduction affects colleagues across its development and support teams. In its official statement, the studio described the announcement as “a difficult day” and said some talented colleagues would be leaving.

The company also emphasized that the decision is not a judgment on the affected employees’ talent or performance. Fishlabs said it is committed to supporting departing colleagues “with care and respect” as they move to their next steps.
Why Fishlabs is cutting jobs
Fishlabs attributed the reduction to “changing project requirements” and the needs of its clients and internal teams. That wording indicates a restructuring of staffing around current work and business demands, but the company has not identified a specific project as the trigger.

No official statement has said that a game was cancelled, that a partner contract ended, or that the studio is closing. Fishlabs said it remains committed to its partner projects and to the teams continuing at the studio.
How many people are affected?
The 2026 announcement does not include a layoff total, percentage or severance figure. GamesWirtschaft most recently reported that Fishlabs had approximately 75 employees, but that is the studio’s overall workforce estimate, not the number of positions being cut. An inquiry about the exact scope was still ongoing in its report.
Until Fishlabs or Plaion publishes a figure, it is not possible to calculate what share of the studio is affected.

Which teams are affected?
- Development: Employees working on game production are included in the reduction.
- Support: Support functions are also affected.
Fishlabs did not provide a role-by-role breakdown, identify individual employees or describe changes to specific partner teams.
Is this the same as Plaion’s 2023 restructuring?
No. A separate Plaion restructuring announced in November 2023 affected around 50 positions. Plaion said that earlier action followed an unannounced project that lacked approval and financing. That figure belongs to the 2023 restructuring and must not be added to, or substituted for, the undisclosed 2026 total.
