The first reviews position Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra as a high-end Windows workstation, not a conventional thin-and-light. Its RTX Spark N1X platform, up to 128GB of unified memory, fast mini-LED display and broad port selection deliver a combination that will appeal to creators, developers, engineers and some PC gamers. The compromises are substantial: a $2,599 starting price, a $5,899 top configuration, weaker CPU efficiency than a MacBook Pro, only moderate battery life and less-polished webcam, speaker and software support.
What the Surface Laptop Ultra is
Microsoft’s first “ultra-class” Surface Laptop is a 15-inch professional machine built around NVIDIA’s RTX Spark N1X platform. The laptop uses a 3270×2180 PixelSense Ultra mini-LED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, two USB4 ports, a magnetic USB4 charging port, HDMI 2.1, USB-A 3.1, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The SSD is removable, which is unusual for a performance-focused thin laptop.

Tom’s Guide lists a 92 Wh battery and a 4.4-pound base weight. Reviewers describe the chassis as dense and solid, with a comfortable keyboard and an exceptionally good haptic trackpad. The screen is taller and brighter than the current MacBook Pro’s display, although its glossy finish produces more reflections.
Configurations and price
| Configuration | Price | Processor and graphics | Memory and storage | Windows edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry model | $2,599 starting price; launch/review pricing reported in 2026 | 18-core RTX Spark N1X, 5,120 GPU cores | 24GB unified memory, 512GB SSD | Windows 11 Home |
| 20-core model | $3,699 starting price; PCWorld reporting in 2026 | 20-core RTX Spark N1X, 6,144 GPU cores | 32GB, 48GB or 64GB unified memory options; storage varies | Windows 11 Pro |
| Top reviewed model | $5,899; 2026 review pricing | 20-core RTX Spark N1X, 6,144 GPU cores | 128GB unified memory, 1TB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
Microsoft’s prices and inventory can change, so check the live configuration immediately before buying. The entry model’s 24GB pool is shared by Windows, applications and graphics workloads; that may become restrictive for large projects even though the laptop carries a dedicated-looking GPU platform. The 128GB version is intended for buyers who can justify workstation-level spending for large local models, development environments or memory-heavy creative work.

Where reviews find the Surface Laptop Ultra strongest
GPU and local AI
RTX Spark’s main advantage is the unusually large shared memory pool combined with strong graphics throughput. Reviewers tested workflows including Photoshop, Premiere, Cyberpunk 2077, text-to-video generation and local large-language-model work. Tom’s Guide describes the design as trading some efficiency for near-desktop-class RTX performance and more useful local-AI capacity than typical thin laptops.
Gaming performance
Tom’s Guide measured 80 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with the Extreme preset, ray tracing and DLSS. Its comparison table recorded 31 fps for an RTX 5060 laptop, 81 fps for an RTX 5070 laptop and 182 fps for an RTX 5090 laptop under the same test conditions. Those results make the Surface viable for demanding games, but not the best-value choice for a gaming-first buyer: conventional x86 gaming laptops offer broader compatibility and more high-refresh display options.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Display, keyboard and ports
The first-generation mini-LED panel provides high resolution, 120Hz motion and strong brightness. Windows Central praised the trackpad as one of the best it had used, while other reviews liked the keyboard and the practical selection of ports. The built-in SD reader, HDMI 2.1 and USB-A reduce the need for dongles when connecting cameras, displays or older peripherals.
Where it falls behind a MacBook Pro
Battery life and efficiency
WIRED recorded 12 hours of local-video playback and reported that a MacBook Pro lasted roughly nine or ten hours longer in its testing. Windows Central calls battery life merely okay, particularly when the GPU is under sustained load. Tom’s Guide and Tom’s Hardware also found Apple ahead in CPU performance and efficiency. Tom’s Hardware measured 3,151 single-core and 20,203 multi-core in Geekbench 6, below the MacBook Pro in that burst-oriented comparison.

Hardware and software polish
Reviews give the MacBook Pro an edge in speakers, webcam quality, screen reflectivity, quiet operation and the maturity of creative-app support. Windows Central also noted that Copilot+ features were missing at review time and that the Surface lacks presence sensing. These are everyday usability gaps rather than headline performance failures, but they matter when spending workstation money.
How it compares with the alternatives
| Priority | Surface Laptop Ultra | 16-inch MacBook Pro | Similarly priced RTX gaming/creator laptop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local AI and large memory workloads | Strongest fit; up to 128GB unified memory | Strong software ecosystem, but memory configurations and model support differ | Strong GPU options; memory capacity depends on model |
| CPU efficiency and unplugged work | Weaker in reported tests; 12-hour local video result | Longer battery life and quieter operation in reviews | Usually designed around plugged-in performance |
| Gaming | 80 fps in the cited Cyberpunk test, but compatibility is narrower than standard x86 gaming PCs | Not the primary choice for PC game breadth | Most rational option for a games-first buyer |
| Display and input | 3270×2180, 120Hz mini-LED; excellent trackpad | Polished display, speakers and trackpad; less tall and less bright than the Surface according to WIRED | Refresh rates and panel quality vary by model |
| Upgradeability | Removable SSD | Not stated in the cited reviews | Varies by model |
Which configuration should you buy?
Choose the $2,599 model when
- You need RTX Spark features at the lowest entry price.
- Your projects are moderate and 24GB shared memory is sufficient.
- You accept Windows 11 Home and the limits of the 512GB SSD.
Choose a 32GB-to-64GB model when
- You routinely run virtual machines, large creative timelines, development toolchains or AI applications together.
- You want Windows 11 Pro and more headroom without paying for 128GB.
Choose the $5,899 128GB model when
- Your business case specifically depends on fitting large local models or memory-heavy workloads in one portable system.
- The cost is justified by replacing a desktop, separate GPU workstation or cloud usage.
Verdict: impressive specialist workstation, not a universal MacBook Pro replacement
The Surface Laptop Ultra is Microsoft’s most powerful Surface PC and a distinctive first-generation platform. Its combination of RTX graphics, local-AI capacity, 128GB unified memory, a high-resolution 120Hz display and useful ports is compelling for professional Windows users. It is not the safer default for everyone: a MacBook Pro remains better for long unplugged sessions, quiet operation, polished audio and video hardware and broad creative-app support, while a conventional RTX laptop makes more sense when gaming is the main goal. Buy the Surface when its memory and GPU capabilities solve a specific workload; otherwise its price and battery compromises are difficult to justify.
