Firewalls in Modern Cyber Defense: What They Do and Why They Matter

A firewall controls network traffic according to security rules. It can filter traffic entering or leaving a device, or govern connections between networks. That makes it an important boundary and segmentation control—not a complete security system. Its value depends on what traffic it can see, how its rules are configured, and how well it is maintained.

What does a firewall do?

NIST defines firewalls as “devices or programs that control the flow of network traffic between networks or hosts employing differing security postures.” In practice, a firewall applies rules to decide which traffic to allow or block. Depending on the implementation, rules may use information such as addresses, ports, protocols, applications, users, or network zones. The available criteria vary by firewall.

NIST SP 800-41 Rev. 1, published September 28, 2009, remains a foundational overview of firewall technologies and policy considerations; it is not a current product comparison. Its central practical point is that a firewall enforces a chosen traffic policy. It cannot make a poor or outdated policy effective simply by being present.

Where can a firewall protect traffic?

Host-based firewalls protect individual devices

A host firewall runs on an endpoint, such as a laptop or server, and governs traffic to or from that device. This can help enforce policy even when a device is away from a protected office network. Microsoft documents Windows Firewall as an included, enabled-by-default host firewall for Windows 10, Windows 11, and the Windows Server versions listed on its overview page. Microsoft’s Windows Firewall overview describes domain, private, and public profiles. Its documented default behavior blocks incoming traffic unless it is solicited or allowed by a rule, while allowing outgoing traffic unless a rule blocks it.

Microsoft advises against disabling Windows Firewall because doing so removes other benefits, including support for IPsec connection security rules, protection against attacks that use network fingerprinting, Windows Service Hardening, and boot-time filters. Administration details can change; consult the current Microsoft documentation for the applicable Windows release.

Network firewalls govern connections between networks

A network firewall is placed where traffic crosses between networks or security zones. It can enforce different rules for, for example, a guest network and an internal server network—but only for traffic that actually passes through it. A device on the internet-facing edge cannot automatically control every connection between internal devices if those connections take another route.

SDN controllers work only with SDN Gateways, Access Points & Switches. Non-SDN controllers work only with non-SDN APs. For devices that are compatible with SDN firmware, please visit TP-Link website.

Some deployments use a physical appliance, while others use software or capabilities built into network equipment. The useful distinction is the traffic scope and policy being enforced, not whether the firewall is a separate box.

Why are firewalls important?

They restrict unwanted traffic paths

Rules can limit which connections are permitted, reducing exposure to traffic that a system does not need. The result is policy enforcement, not a guarantee that every harmful connection will be identified. A firewall’s protections are bounded by its placement, visibility, rule logic, and configuration.

They enable network segmentation

Segmentation divides a network into zones with different access requirements. A firewall can help enforce those boundaries—for example, keeping guest devices or externally facing services from having unrestricted access to internal systems. CISA’s guidance for communications infrastructure recommends combining firewall capabilities with measures such as router access-control lists, stateful packet inspection, demilitarized zones (DMZs), and VLANs. It also recommends placing internet-facing DNS, web, and mail services in a DMZ, logging denied traffic, and not managing devices from the internet. These recommendations are specifically framed for communications-infrastructure hardening, rather than as a universal configuration recipe. Read CISA’s guidance.

They provide a policy point that can be reviewed

Rules make permitted and denied traffic paths more explicit, which supports review and change control. NIST’s guidance addresses policy, selection, configuration, testing, deployment, and ongoing management. Rules need to match operational needs and be revisited as systems and threats change; overly broad allowances can undermine the boundary they are meant to establish.

What a firewall cannot do by itself

A firewall is one control in a broader defense-in-depth design. It does not replace endpoint security, authentication, monitoring, secure system configuration, or other safeguards. Nor should it be described as stopping every attack: permitted traffic can still carry risk, and a firewall cannot enforce rules on traffic it does not see. CISA’s hardening guidance presents firewall capabilities alongside other network protections, not as a standalone solution.

How to assess a firewall approach

Whether evaluating an existing setup or planning a change, start with the traffic and policy requirements. These factors help compare approaches without assuming that a particular product or topology is best for every network.

  • Traffic visibility: Check which characteristics the implementation can use in rules, such as addresses, ports, protocols, applications, users, or zones.
  • Placement: Map which paths cross the firewall. Confirm whether it can control the internal segment-to-segment traffic that matters, as well as traffic crossing the network edge.
  • Segmentation: Identify whether guests, IoT devices, employees, servers, and externally facing services need separate policies.
  • Operations: Establish who owns policy, how rules are reviewed and changed, what is logged, and what expertise is needed to maintain the configuration.
  • Compatibility: For a network deployment, verify throughput, interfaces, compatibility with existing routers or gateways, and current hardware and software prerequisites against the relevant documentation.

What this means for home and small-office users

Many users already have a host firewall: Windows Firewall is included with Windows and enabled by default. That can provide device-level traffic control without buying a separate appliance. A network firewall may address a different need, such as enforcing rules between network segments, but its effectiveness depends on how it fits into the router and the paths traffic takes. Not every user needs an additional device.

If considering a network appliance, first determine whether it will replace the router or sit alongside it, and which traffic its chosen operating mode can inspect. For example, Firewalla’s vendor documentation says its Gold models work best in Router Mode and can use Bridge Mode when replacing an existing router is not possible; placement affects visibility. The vendor describes the Firewalla Gold Plus as offering intrusion prevention and network segmentation. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent test results. Check current specifications, feature requirements, topology fit, and availability before making a purchase decision. Firewalla’s operating-mode guidance explains how deployment affects traffic interception.

For managed network policies, implementation details also matter. Ubiquiti documents zone-based firewall policies in its UniFi gateway ecosystem, with supported hardware and software prerequisites that may change. Consult its current zone-based firewall documentation before relying on a particular feature or configuration.

Bottom line

Firewalls matter because they turn network security policy into rules governing traffic between devices, networks, or zones. Their contribution is strongest when the protected traffic actually passes through them, the rules reflect real needs, and the controls are maintained as part of a wider security design.
