Firefox vs. LibreWolf: Which Privacy-Focused Browser Is Easier to Customize?

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Firefox is easier for most people to customize when customization means changing the toolbar, settings, themes, extensions, and privacy permissions through visible controls. LibreWolf becomes the more convenient choice for advanced users who want privacy-oriented defaults plus repeatable configuration-file overrides. That conclusion is an inference from each project’s documented workflows, not the result of a comparative usability study.

The choice is not simply “menus in Firefox versus files in LibreWolf.” LibreWolf also provides Settings and about:config. Its distinctive advantage is a documented librewolf.overrides.cfg file that can carry preferences across profiles and installations, back them up, and reapply them at startup.

What “easier to customize” means here

Customization can describe several different jobs, and the answer changes depending on which job you mean:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Visual changes: moving toolbar buttons, selecting a theme, changing the home page, or adjusting the appearance of tabs and menus.
  • Feature changes: choosing search, content, download, notification, or privacy behavior in a settings panel.
  • Extension management: installing add-ons, reviewing their permissions, and deciding whether they can run in private windows.
  • Advanced preference work: changing entries in about:config, applying user-interface CSS, or maintaining a file of preferences that can be reused.
  • Repeatability: making the same changes on several profiles or installations without redoing every choice manually.

Firefox has the clearest, most consistently documented path for the first three categories. LibreWolf’s documentation gives advanced users a more explicit workflow for the last category. Neither project’s official documentation establishes that users complete these tasks faster or with fewer mistakes in a controlled usability study.

Why Firefox is easier for everyday customization

Mozilla describes Firefox as supporting “a wide range of customization options that are well-suited to all skill levels.” In practical terms, that means you can begin with visible controls and move to more technical methods only when you need them. You do not have to understand preference names or configuration syntax to make useful changes.

1. Rearrange the toolbar visually

  1. Open the Firefox application menu.
  2. Choose the toolbar customization command, usually shown as Customize toolbar or equivalent wording.
  3. Drag available buttons into the toolbar, move existing buttons, remove controls you do not use, and restore the default layout if necessary.
  4. Save or finish the customization view.

This is the clearest example of Firefox’s low-friction approach: the browser exposes the result you want instead of asking you to identify a preference key. The exact position of a button can vary with the Firefox release and operating system, but the operation remains a visible interface task.

2. Use Settings before hidden preferences

Open the application menu and select Settings; some platforms or older releases may label the same area Preferences. Use the search field in Settings when you know the behavior you want to change. This route is appropriate for routine choices such as startup behavior, search, downloads, permissions, notifications, and privacy controls that Mozilla exposes to normal users.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Settings also make it easier to understand the scope of a change. A labeled checkbox or selector generally tells you what it affects, whereas a hidden preference may have an unfamiliar name and a value whose consequences are not obvious.

3. Add extensions and themes through the add-ons interface

  1. Open the application menu and choose Add-ons and themes.
  2. Use the extensions or themes area to search for an add-on, inspect its description, and install it.
  3. Return to the installed-items list to disable, remove, or configure the add-on later.
  4. Use the themes section to select or remove a theme without editing a file.

Firefox treats extensions and themes as first-class customization tools. That gives a beginner an incremental path: change the interface with a theme, add one feature, and reverse the change from the same management screen if it is not useful.

4. Review an extension before granting access

Firefox’s extension documentation describes three controls that matter for privacy-conscious customization:

  • Optional permissions: an extension may request additional access only when a feature needs it, allowing you to decide whether to grant that access.
  • Data-collection information: Firefox provides disclosures about documented extension data collection. The cited guidance applies to Firefox 140 and later, so check the information shown by your installed version.
  • Private-window access: you can decide whether a particular extension is allowed to run in private windows rather than granting that access automatically.

These controls do not make every extension safe, and they do not prove that Firefox is more private than LibreWolf. They do make the customization decision visible and reviewable in the browser’s normal interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Firefox’s advanced customization becomes less straightforward

Firefox does provide deeper control. You can type about:config in the address bar, acknowledge the warning, search for a preference, and change its value. You can also use advanced CSS customization to alter parts of the interface. Mozilla explicitly cautions that these methods are not officially supported, may cause unexpected behavior or break Firefox, and can be affected by future updates.

Use about:config only when the normal setting is insufficient

  1. First search Firefox Settings for the behavior you want.
  2. If no supported control exists, identify the exact preference and read documentation for its accepted values before changing it.
  3. Change one preference at a time, record the original value, and restart or revisit the affected feature to verify the result.
  4. If a problem appears, return the preference to its original value or use the reset control shown for that entry.

The important usability trade-off is not that Firefox lacks advanced control. It is that the control is less forgiving: a typo, an incompatible value, or an update that changes an internal preference can create a problem that the ordinary Settings interface would have prevented.

Understand the maintenance cost of custom CSS

CSS-based interface changes can produce a very specific visual result, but they depend on internal interface structures that can change between releases. Mozilla’s warning means you should keep a backup of your CSS, expect to revisit it after updates, and be prepared to remove it if the browser behaves unexpectedly. This is powerful customization, not the easiest customization.

How LibreWolf approaches customization

LibreWolf’s official documentation describes three levels of control: Settings, about:config, and a dedicated librewolf.overrides.cfg file. That matters because a person can start with menus and move deeper without abandoning the browser, while an experienced user can maintain a repeatable set of preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Start in Settings

LibreWolf is not a file-only browser. Open its Settings area to change the options exposed through the interface. This is the right starting point for a one-off adjustment or for anyone who does not yet know the underlying preference name. The reviewed documentation does not support a claim that LibreWolf hides all useful customization behind configuration files.

2. Use about:config for an individual advanced change

When a setting is not exposed in the menus, enter about:config in the address bar and search for the relevant preference. Change only values you understand, note the previous value, and verify the result after restarting if the preference requires it. LibreWolf’s documentation presents this as an available route in addition to Settings, not as a replacement for them.

3. Use librewolf.overrides.cfg for repeatable preferences

The overrides file is LibreWolf’s clearest differentiator for advanced customization. The project documents it as a place to define preferences that can be carried across profiles and installations, backed up, or ported to another setup. LibreWolf reads the file on every startup.

  1. Decide which preferences you want to maintain consistently rather than change only once.
  2. Follow LibreWolf’s documentation to create or locate librewolf.overrides.cfg in the correct profile or configuration location for your installation.
  3. Add preferences using the syntax and recipes documented by the project. Do not copy a value unless you understand what it changes.
  4. Save the file and restart LibreWolf so the startup read can apply the changes.
  5. Keep a dated backup of the file and a short note explaining each preference.
  6. When moving to another profile or installation, port the file according to the documentation, then verify every setting because defaults and supported preferences can change.

This workflow is attractive when consistency matters more than a graphical editor. A single file can act as a record of your choices, but it also introduces ordinary configuration-file responsibilities: correct syntax, safe backups, and troubleshooting when a preference is renamed or no longer supported.

Is LibreWolf customizable without editing a configuration file?

Yes. The official documentation establishes that LibreWolf supports Settings and about:config as well as librewolf.overrides.cfg. You can therefore customize it through menus and individual preference controls without creating the overrides file.

The file becomes useful when you need to reproduce the same choices across profiles, reinstallations, or multiple machines. It is not a prerequisite for changing the browser’s ordinary behavior. The trade-off is that advanced, repeatable control requires you to maintain text configuration rather than relying entirely on visible controls.

Which browser is easier for advanced customization?

There are two different meanings of “advanced,” and they point in different directions.

For occasional experiments, Firefox is more approachable

Firefox has a large body of mainstream documentation around Settings, add-ons, themes, and toolbar controls. If you occasionally need to inspect about:config or apply a visual tweak, you can do so after using the supported interface. The drawback is Mozilla’s explicit warning that advanced preferences and CSS are unsupported and may be disrupted by updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a maintained preference set, LibreWolf is more direct

If your goal is to keep a known set of preferences and reapply it after creating a profile or installation, LibreWolf documents a purpose-built overrides file. That makes the workflow easier to repeat than manually revisiting many controls. It does not eliminate maintenance: the file is read at startup, so a malformed or obsolete entry can affect every launch until you correct or remove it.

For visual customization, choose the method you are willing to maintain

A menu-based change is usually easiest to discover and undo. A CSS or preference-file change can reach details that menus do not expose, but it requires notes, backups, and post-update checks. The right choice depends less on the browser name than on whether you prefer a graphical workflow or controlled text configuration.

Privacy customization: what the documentation does and does not show

This comparison is about ease of customization, not a verdict on which browser is more private. The supplied official sources do not provide a controlled privacy comparison, a speed test, an extension-count comparison, or a user-preference statistic.

Firefox’s documentation gives unusually explicit guidance for extension permissions, disclosed data collection, and private-window access. That tells you how to make an informed extension decision in Firefox. It does not establish that LibreWolf lacks equivalent controls; the reviewed source set simply does not document that point in enough detail to support a comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LibreWolf’s documented defaults and override mechanism may appeal to readers who want privacy-oriented behavior to be consistent across profiles. Consistency is a customization benefit, not proof that one browser offers a universally stronger privacy posture.

A decision framework for choosing between them

Choose Firefox if most of your changes look like these

  • You want to move toolbar buttons without reading technical documentation.
  • You expect to change settings occasionally and prefer labeled controls.
  • You rely on themes and extensions as your main customization tools.
  • You want a documented way to inspect extension permissions and decide on private-window access.
  • You would rather troubleshoot through supported settings than maintain a configuration file.

Choose LibreWolf if these priorities describe your workflow

  • You want privacy-oriented defaults and are comfortable checking how they affect your preferred sites and extensions.
  • You want the option to use Settings first, then about:config or an overrides file when necessary.
  • You maintain several profiles or installations and want to port a consistent preference set.
  • You are comfortable editing text files, keeping backups, and checking configuration after updates.
  • You value repeatability more than the shortest path to a one-time visual change.

Use a mixed strategy when neither extreme fits

You do not have to make every change in the same way. In either browser, begin with the normal settings interface. Use an extension only when it provides a feature you actually need. Reserve hidden preferences for a documented requirement, and reserve a configuration file for choices you intend to maintain. This limits the number of fragile changes while preserving a path to deeper control.

Common failure modes and recovery steps

A change made in the menu does not appear

  • Confirm that you edited the intended profile rather than another profile or a temporary session.
  • Restart the browser if the option affects startup or a component that is initialized only once.
  • Check whether an extension or theme is overriding the visual result.
  • Return to the same settings panel and verify that the value was saved.

An about:config change causes unexpected behavior

  1. Open about:config again and locate the preference you changed.
  2. Use the reset control or restore the original value you recorded.
  3. Restart the browser and test before changing anything else.
  4. If the issue persists, disable recently added extensions or themes one at a time to separate a preference problem from an add-on conflict.

LibreWolf does not apply an override

  • Check that the file is named exactly librewolf.overrides.cfg and is stored in the location specified by LibreWolf’s current documentation.
  • Verify the preference syntax and value against the project’s documented recipes.
  • Confirm that the file was saved before launching LibreWolf and restart the browser, since the file is read at startup.
  • Test one entry at a time so a syntax error or obsolete preference does not hide which line failed.

A browser update changes a custom interface

For Firefox CSS or unsupported preferences, compare the behavior with a clean profile or with the custom change disabled. If the problem disappears, restore the affected preference or CSS from backup only after checking whether the current release still supports it. For LibreWolf overrides, review each entry after an update and remove settings that are no longer documented or needed.

How to keep customization manageable

  1. Write down the goal before the change. “Hide this button” is easier to reverse than an unexplained preference name.
  2. Prefer one change at a time. This gives you a clear cause when a page, extension, or startup sequence behaves differently.
  3. Keep a rollback record. Record the original value for hidden preferences and retain a backup of any overrides or CSS files.
  4. Separate privacy decisions from appearance decisions. A theme or toolbar layout should not be mixed into a file of security-sensitive preferences unless you have a reason to keep them together.
  5. Recheck after updates. Unsupported Firefox customizations and LibreWolf overrides can be affected by version changes, even when the browser still launches.
  6. Review extensions periodically. Remove add-ons you no longer use and revisit permissions, data disclosures, and private-window access in Firefox’s extension controls.

Final verdict

For the broadest audience, Firefox is easier to customize because its toolbar, Settings, themes, and extension workflows are clearly exposed and documented for different skill levels. It is the better fit when customization means making visible changes safely and occasionally.
