Firefox for Android has the clearer, current documentation for background playback. In an ordinary tab, Mozilla says audio or video can continue when you minimize Firefox, with controls in Android’s notification panel and a pause control for playing tabs in Open Tabs. Private-tab media is paused when Firefox is minimized, and individual sites, battery controls, or background-data limits can still interrupt playback.
Chrome should not be described as incapable of background playback. Google’s official Android evidence retrieved for this comparison is historical: a 2015 Chrome 45 Beta article documented media notifications with play/pause and a link back to the playing page. Chrome’s Media Session documentation explains controls that websites can expose, but it does not prove that every current Chrome Android build or website offers the same interface. The practical choice is therefore to test the site you use, then check Android permissions and power settings when playback stops.

Firefox vs. Chrome for Android at a glance
| Question | Firefox for Android | Chrome for Android |
|---|---|---|
| Can media continue after minimizing? | Mozilla’s current support guidance says media in ordinary tabs can continue, with exceptions for private tabs and websites or players that pause in the background. | Official evidence retrieved for Android is historical rather than a current behavior inventory. It confirms that Chrome 45 Beta had Android media notifications, not that every current site behaves identically. |
| Notification controls | Mozilla documents controls in Android notifications while audio or video is playing. | A 2015 Chrome 45 Beta article described play/pause and a way back to the playing page. Current control parity is not established by that article. |
| Controls inside the browser | Open Tabs identifies tabs playing audio or video and provides a pause control. | Controls depend heavily on the website’s Media Session implementation and the current browser and Android build. |
| Private browsing | Media from private tabs pauses when Firefox is minimized. | No comparable current official Android behavior was established in the sources used here. |
| Picture-in-picture | Mozilla documents video picture-in-picture (PiP), provided Android allows PiP for Firefox. | Desktop Chrome instructions do not establish Android behavior or parity. |
| Most useful conclusion | Best-documented option for this specific use case. | May work for a particular site, but verify on the device and version you actually use. |
This is a documentation-based comparison, not a universal playback guarantee. A site can deliberately stop when its page is backgrounded, and Android can suspend either browser to save power or data.

What “background playback” means on Android
Background playback is audio or video that keeps running after you leave the browser window, lock the screen, minimize the browser, or open another app. Audio-only listening is usually the simplest case: the sound continues while the browser is not visible and playback controls can appear in the notification shade. Video in the background generally means one of two different things:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Audio continues while the video is hidden. This is useful for lectures, interviews, music, and long-form spoken content.
- Picture-in-picture keeps the video visible. The player shrinks into a floating window over another app or tab.
PiP is not a synonym for background audio. It requires Android’s PiP permission for the browser and depends on the site’s player. A browser can continue audio without displaying video, while a site can support PiP but stop entirely when minimized.
How Firefox for Android handles background media
Ordinary tabs can continue after minimizing
Mozilla’s Firefox for Android support page, last updated April 9, 2025, says that minimizing Firefox while playing video or audio allows playback to continue in the background so you can multitask. The statement applies to normal tabs, not every tab type or every website.
When media is actively playing, Firefox can expose controls through Android’s notification panel. The same support guidance says Firefox’s Open Tabs view shows which tabs are playing audio or video and places a pause control beside the playing tab. That gives you two ways to stop sound without returning to the page: use the system notification or pause the tab from Firefox itself.

Firefox pauses audio and video opened in private tabs when you minimize the browser. If uninterrupted listening matters, open the page in a standard tab. This is a documented Firefox behavior, not an Android-wide rule that should be assumed for Chrome’s incognito mode.
Websites can override your expectation
Mozilla also warns that some websites or media players pause when Firefox moves into the background. A page may use its own visibility detection, a custom player, an expiring session, or a service policy that prevents background use. Firefox’s background capability therefore means the browser can keep eligible media alive; it does not force every player to continue.

What the available Chrome evidence actually shows
Historical Android notification support
Chrome for Developers published “Media playback notifications for Chrome on Android” on July 20, 2015, describing Chrome 45 Beta. That documentation said a media notification could show the page title, offer play and pause, and provide a route back to the page that was playing. It also described a five-second threshold before the notification appeared.
Those details establish historical Chrome behavior, not a current checklist for Chrome on Android in 2026. Android, Chrome, and website media implementations have changed since Chrome 45. You should not use the 2015 article to promise a particular notification layout, button set, or five-second rule on a current device.
Media Session controls come from the website
Chrome’s Media Session documentation describes a web API that lets a site provide media metadata and respond to actions such as play, pause, seeking, and track changes. The API explains what a web app can request; it does not guarantee that every site implements it or that every Android build displays every action.
As a result, two pages opened in the same Chrome version can expose different controls. One player may provide title, artwork, seek, and next-track actions. Another may expose only play and pause, or no useful notification at all if playback is not active or the page does not integrate with the API.
How to keep audio playing in Firefox on Android
- Use a standard tab. Do not start the session in a private tab if you need playback to survive minimizing Firefox.
- Start playback visibly. Open the page, press Play, and wait until the player is genuinely running. A page that has loaded but not started media may not create an Android media notification.
- Minimize Firefox or open another app. Audio should continue for eligible media in an ordinary tab. If you want video visible rather than audio-only playback, use the player’s PiP control when available.
- Open Android’s notification panel. Look for Firefox’s active media notification. Use its available controls to pause or resume without returning to the page.
- Use Firefox Open Tabs when needed. Open the tab switcher and identify the tab marked as playing audio or video; use the adjacent pause control to stop it.
- If nothing appears, check permission and playback state. Confirm that Firefox is allowed to post notifications in Android settings and that media is still actively playing in the page.
Android setting names vary by manufacturer and version. On some phones, notification permission is under Settings, Notifications, App notifications, and Firefox; on others, the wording or menu hierarchy differs.

Why Firefox stops when you switch apps
The page or player pauses itself
Try a second, unrelated site. If the second site continues while the original stops, the first site’s player or service policy is the likely cause. A browser setting cannot force a website to ignore its own background behavior.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Android battery controls suspend Firefox
Battery Saver and per-app battery restrictions can stop background work. Review Firefox’s battery setting in Android’s app settings and remove an unusually restrictive mode when continuous playback is important. The exact path differs by device maker; common labels include Battery, App battery usage, Background activity, Unrestricted, Optimized, or Restricted.
Background-data limits block the stream
Data Saver or a per-app background-data restriction can prevent the player from fetching the next segment after you leave Firefox. Check Firefox’s mobile-data or network settings in Android and allow background data where your plan and privacy preferences permit it. Wi-Fi-only policies and metered-network rules can also affect a stream.
Firefox notifications are blocked
Firefox says its media controls appear in Android notifications while audio or video is playing. If the notification is absent, verify that Android permits Firefox notifications, then restart playback. Notification permission controls visibility of the control surface; it does not repair a player that has already stopped.
The device is handling the screen-off transition differently
Some Android builds apply extra power management when the screen locks. Test with the screen on, then with the screen off, and compare results after reviewing battery and background-data settings. If playback fails only after locking, the device’s power policy is more likely involved than the tab itself.

Picture-in-picture versus background audio
Use background audio when you want sound to continue without a visible video. Use PiP when you need to watch while reading another tab or using another app. Mozilla documents video PiP in Firefox for Android, but Android must allow PiP for Firefox and the website’s player must support the mode.
- Start a supported video in a normal Firefox tab.
- Choose the player’s PiP control or leave the video in the way supported by that site.
- If Android refuses to create the floating window, open Android settings, find Firefox’s picture-in-picture permission, and allow it if you want this behavior.
- Test another video site if the first player still closes. PiP support is not universal.
Desktop Chrome help pages are not evidence of Chrome Android PiP behavior. Do not infer mobile parity from desktop instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Autoplay settings do not guarantee background playback
Autoplay controls whether a site may start media automatically. It does not guarantee that media will continue after Firefox is minimized or the screen is locked. In Firefox, the global autoplay control is under Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay. Individual site exceptions can override the general choice.
If a page will not start without a tap, review autoplay permission or interact with the player first. Changing autoplay will not bypass a site’s deliberate background restriction, Android power management, or digital-rights requirements.

| Control or behavior | What is established | What remains site- or device-dependent |
|---|---|---|
| Play and pause | Firefox documents notification controls for active media. Historical Chrome documentation described play/pause. | Whether a notification appears depends on active playback, Android notification permission, and the current implementation. |
| Seek forward or backward | Chrome’s Media Session API allows a website to handle seeking actions. | The site must implement the action, and Android and the browser must expose it. |
| Next or previous track | The Media Session API supports track-change actions. | These are meaningful only for players with a playlist or track model and are not guaranteed in every notification. |

Testing Chrome on your own phone
Because the current Chrome Android-specific evidence is limited, use a repeatable test instead of an absolute claim.
Best Value
- Update Chrome through your normal Android app-update channel, then note the browser version and Android version.
- Open the target site in a regular tab and start playback with the page in the foreground.
- Minimize Chrome, open another app, and inspect Android notifications.
- Try the same page with the screen locked, then repeat on Wi-Fi and mobile data if both matter to you.
- Test a second site. If only one service stops, its player or policy is the strongest suspect.
- Review Android notification permission, battery restrictions, Data Saver, and per-app background-data settings before concluding that Chrome cannot handle the task.
This procedure tells you what your current combination of site, Chrome build, Android release, and device policy does. It does not turn one successful or failed test into a claim about every Chrome user.
DRM and account restrictions are separate issues
Protected streaming services can impose device, account, subscription, or regional requirements. Digital-rights management may also restrict downloading, casting, PiP, or background use. A browser setting cannot bypass those requirements. If ordinary sites work but one protected service does not, check that service’s supported-device and account rules before changing browser settings.
Which browser should you choose?
Choose Firefox when documentation and visible controls matter
- You want a current, explicit statement that ordinary-tab media can continue after minimizing.
- You want Firefox’s Open Tabs view to identify playing tabs and offer a pause control.
- You prefer a documented distinction between ordinary and private tabs.
- You want Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance for notification, battery, data, and PiP settings.
Choose Chrome when your site already works well there
- The specific service exposes the controls you need in your current Chrome and Android versions.
- Your organization or account workflow depends on Chrome.
- You have tested screen-off playback and notification behavior on the phone you use.
There is no evidence here for a categorical statement that Chrome cannot play media in the background, nor for a claim that Firefox works with every player. Firefox wins on the clarity and recency of the official documentation for this exact use case; your site and Android configuration still determine the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A quick troubleshooting checklist
- Is playback actually running before you minimize the browser?
- Is the page in a normal tab rather than a Firefox private tab?
- Does a second website continue, separating a site-specific problem from a browser-wide one?
- Are browser notifications allowed in Android?
- Are Battery Saver or Firefox-specific battery restrictions enabled?
- Is Data Saver or a background-data restriction blocking the stream?
- Are you trying to use PiP, and is Android’s PiP permission enabled for the browser?
- Could DRM, an account rule, subscription, or regional restriction apply?
The Bottom Line
For Android background playback, Firefox is the better-documented choice: Mozilla currently documents ordinary-tab continuation, notification controls, and a playing-tab pause action. Chrome has documented Android media notifications historically, but the available official evidence does not establish its current control set across devices. Test the site you care about, and treat Android battery, data, notification, private-tab, PiP, and DRM rules as part of the playback system.
