Firefox Enterprise is managed Firefox, not a separate browser edition. An organization chooses either Firefox rapid release or Firefox ESR, deploys the installer that matches its operating systems, delivers policies through its existing management tools, and supports users through Mozilla’s public resources or paid Professional Support. As of October 13, 2026, rapid release moves to a two-week major cadence, while ESR follows an approximately annual major cycle with security and policy maintenance between major versions. Confirm versions, support dates, package formats, and policy availability immediately before rollout because these details change.

What does “Firefox Enterprise” mean?

Firefox Enterprise refers to the administrative features and deployment guidance used to run Firefox in an organization. It is not a third release channel alongside rapid release and ESR. Administrators select a channel, install Firefox on managed devices, and apply configuration through tools such as Group Policy, Intune, Endpoint Manager, Jamf, macOS MDM, or scripts.

Mozilla’s enterprise documentation covers Windows, macOS, and Linux. It also documents policy files and templates that can be delivered separately from the application installer. That separation lets an IT team update configuration without rebuilding or repackaging Firefox.

Should an organization use Firefox rapid release or Firefox ESR?

Decision factor Rapid release Firefox ESR
Major-version cadence One major release every two weeks, according to Mozilla’s 2026 administrator guidance. One major version on average every 52 weeks.
Interim maintenance Minor crash or security fixes are issued as needed. Minor crash, security, and policy updates are issued as needed and at least every two weeks.
Feature availability New features and fixes arrive sooner. Major functional changes wait for the next ESR transition.
Environment testing Requires more frequent application, extension, and web-compatibility testing. Provides a longer compatibility and certification interval.
Transition planning Uses the regular rapid-release stream. Mozilla provides at least 12 weeks of overlap between an incoming ESR and the previous ESR’s end of life.

When rapid release is a better fit

Choose rapid release when users need browser features and fixes quickly and the organization can test on a frequent schedule. The two-week major cadence means that a change-control process designed around quarterly browser upgrades is unlikely to be sufficient without automation and staged validation.

When ESR is a better fit

Choose ESR when application certification, regulated change control, or a large extension estate makes frequent major changes expensive. ESR receives security and policy maintenance between major versions, but it is not a promise that every ordinary feature or stability fix will be backported.

What ESR maintenance does not include

Mozilla describes ESR point maintenance as focused mainly on high-risk or high-impact security vulnerabilities. Functional enhancements and ordinary stability fixes are generally outside that maintenance scope. Treat ESR as a stability and certification strategy, not as a branch that receives all rapid-release improvements.

How often does Firefox ESR update?

Mozilla says an ESR major version is released on average every 52 weeks. During that period, point releases deliver security, crash, and policy updates as needed, with updates occurring at least every two weeks. An off-schedule release can address a live security vulnerability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Each ESR is maintained for more than a year. Mozilla allows at least 12 weeks of overlap between the new ESR and the previous ESR’s end of life so administrators can test extensions, line-of-business sites, certificates, authentication, and policies before certification.

What happens at the end of ESR support?

After an ESR reaches end of support, the old version receives no further updates and the next ESR is offered through Firefox’s application update service. Mozilla says an ESR is automatically upgraded near the end of the overlap period unless administrators control ESR through their deployment system. Organizations that need a scheduled transition should therefore manage the application lifecycle centrally rather than relying on an unmanaged client.

What changed in Firefox 154 and Firefox 155?

Firefox 155, identified by Mozilla as beginning in September 2026, marks the move from a four-week to a two-week rapid-release major cadence. Firefox 154 is also the last standalone enterprise release-note article. Enterprise-relevant changes are to appear in the regular Firefox release notes from that point forward.

This publication change matters operationally: administrators should no longer search only for an article labelled “enterprise release notes.” For every target version, read the regular release notes and then check Mozilla’s current policy reference for the exact platforms and versions that support a policy.

How do I deploy Firefox in my organization?

1. Select the channel and define the update ring

Decide whether rapid release or ESR matches your testing capacity and certification requirements. Define pilot, broad deployment, and rollback groups before packaging. For ESR, put the overlap period on the calendar at least 12 weeks before the old branch reaches end of life.

2. Choose the package for each operating system

Platform Mozilla-listed package options Common management paths
Windows 32-bit and 64-bit EXE and MSI; ARM64/AArch64 builds Group Policy, Intune, SCCM/Endpoint Manager, or scripts
macOS Universal DMG for Intel and Apple Silicon; DMG or PKG deployment is documented for managed environments Jamf Pro, MDM configuration profiles, or scripts
Linux 32-bit and 64-bit tarballs, ARM64/AArch64 tarballs, and Flatpak availability JSON policy files, package or archive distribution, and custom scripts

Package and architecture availability can change. Confirm the current download options and minimum system requirements at rollout time rather than assuming that a package listed in an older deployment plan remains available.

3. Deploy the application

  • Windows GPO: Use the MSI for machine-wide installation and Mozilla’s ADMX templates for policy control.
  • Microsoft Intune: Use the MSI for deployment, update management, and policy enforcement on Windows.
  • SCCM or Endpoint Manager: Mozilla suggests the MSI for silent or automated configuration in larger Windows estates.
  • Jamf Pro: Deploy the macOS DMG or PKG and assign configuration profiles.
  • macOS MDM: Deliver configuration profiles independently of the application package.
  • Linux: Distribute the tarball or Flatpak and place the JSON policy where the managed installation reads it.
  • Custom scripts: Use scripts when your Linux or macOS environment does not use a central software-management platform.

4. Deliver policies independently

Policies do not have to be bundled into the installer. Windows administrators can use ADMX through Group Policy, macOS administrators can use configuration profiles, and Linux administrators can use a JSON policy file. Independent delivery makes it possible to change a homepage, proxy, certificate, or extension rule without replacing the Firefox binary.

5. Pilot and verify

Start with a small device group. Confirm that Firefox reports the intended channel and version, policies are applied, force-installed extensions behave correctly, certificates and proxy settings work, and update controls match the rollout plan. Expand only after the pilot passes the same business applications and authentication flows used by production users.

How do I configure Firefox enterprise policies?

Windows

Import Mozilla’s ADMX templates into the central store, then assign Firefox settings through machine or user Group Policy as appropriate. The same policy model can be enforced alongside MSI deployment. Keep the template version and the Firefox version in the change record so a policy introduced in one release is not assumed to exist in another.

macOS

Use an MDM configuration profile for managed settings. Jamf Pro can distribute the Firefox application and the profile, while other MDM systems can deliver the profile independently. Test profile precedence when more than one configuration source targets the same setting.

Linux

Mozilla gives /etc/firefox/policies/policies.json as a typical location for the policy file. File ownership, permissions, and the exact installation path should match the distribution method used by your organization. Validate the file as JSON before deployment and test it on the same architecture and package type used in production.

Common policy areas

  • Homepage for a locked or managed start page.
  • Certificates for enterprise trust requirements.
  • Proxy for managed network routing.
  • ExtensionSettings for allowed, blocked, or force-installed extensions.
  • BlockAboutConfig to restrict access to advanced configuration.
  • ManagedBookmarks for organization-provided bookmarks.

Mozilla’s example that uses DisableAppUpdate and locks a homepage illustrates policy syntax; it is not a blanket recommendation to disable updates. If updates are disabled in the application, your deployment system must provide a tested, time-bounded replacement process for security patches.

Which recent policy changes need version-specific testing?

Release note Documented change How to use the information
Firefox 154 DefaultBrowserSettingEnabled was added. Confirm support in the current policy reference and test on the target release.
Firefox 154 CNSA2KeyAgreementEnabled was listed as Firefox 154 only. Do not assume the setting applies to later versions.
Firefox 154 SanitizeOnShutdown gained an Exceptions option, listed as Firefox 154 only. Validate the exact schema before production use.
Firefox 152 ExtensionSettings changes could prevent users from disabling extension updates. Test update behavior for both force-installed and user-installed extensions.
Firefox 152 DefaultSerialGuardSetting was added. Check the current policy reference before depending on it.
Firefox 152 Web Serial was disabled by default when Firefox was managed by enterprise policies. Test hardware workflows that use Web Serial.
Firefox 152 ManagedBookmarks gained a favicon option. Verify rendering and policy behavior in the deployed channel.

The Firefox 152 notes also recorded fixes involving profile import, PDF handling, and updates to force-installed extensions. These are examples of why release notes and the policy reference must be checked together; a behavior described for one version is not automatically a universal rule for every platform or channel.

How do I manage Firefox updates?

  1. Choose rapid release or ESR based on the testing and certification workload your organization can sustain.
  2. Use the deployment platform to control assignment rings, maintenance windows, and rollback rather than relying on individual users.
  3. Keep security updates enabled unless an equivalent managed process is already in place.
  4. Test policy and extension compatibility in a pilot group before broad deployment.
  5. For ESR, monitor the lifecycle and begin certification during the documented overlap period.
  6. Record the Firefox version, policy-template version, package architecture, and deployment date for each ring.

Rapid release requires more frequent validation because major changes arrive every two weeks. ESR reduces the frequency of major compatibility events but still requires regular point-release testing because security and policy updates continue throughout the lifecycle.

What support does Mozilla offer for organizations?

Public support

Mozilla provides documentation, a knowledge base, and community forums for ordinary Firefox users and administrators. These resources are the starting point for installation questions, policy syntax, release behavior, and troubleshooting.

Firefox Professional Support

Mozilla’s current Firefox Enterprise page says Professional Support is included with Firefox Enterprise and can be purchased as an upgrade by organizations using Firefox. The service provides direct access to Mozilla experts and private triage with defined response times. Mozilla’s July 2026 update uses the name “Firefox Professional Support”; an earlier November 2025 announcement called the offering “Firefox Support for Organizations” and described early access beginning in January 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The announcement describes private tickets, severity-based triage, escalation paths, and discounts on custom development for paid-support customers. Custom development is an add-on, not an automatic part of the support service. Current prices, geography, contract eligibility, and a detailed service-level schedule are not established in the cited material, so obtain those terms directly from Mozilla before budgeting or signing.

How can an administrator verify a recent policy change?

  1. Identify the exact Firefox version and channel in which the policy will run.
  2. Read the regular Firefox release notes; from Firefox 155 onward, enterprise changes are no longer collected in a standalone enterprise-note article.
  3. Open the current policy reference and confirm the policy name, value type, supported operating systems, and version range.
  4. Check whether the release note marks the policy as version-specific, as Mozilla did for two Firefox 154 examples.
  5. Apply the policy to a test device and verify the resulting behavior in the browser and in the affected workflow.
  6. Document the result before promoting the policy to additional deployment rings.

This process prevents a common error: copying a policy name from an old release note and assuming that its syntax, default, or platform coverage has not changed.

Practical deployment checklist

  • Channel selected and its cadence understood.
  • Windows, macOS, and Linux package architectures matched to the device inventory.
  • Installer deployment assigned to a pilot ring before production.
  • ADMX, MDM, or JSON policy delivery tested independently from the installer.
  • Homepage, proxy, certificates, bookmarks, and extension rules verified.
  • Update ownership defined: application service, management platform, or a documented combination.
  • ESR overlap dates tracked and certification scheduled at least 12 weeks before the old branch ends.
  • Regular release notes and the current policy reference included in every version-change review.
  • Public support and, where required, Professional Support escalation paths recorded for the help desk.

Bottom line for IT decision-makers

Use rapid release when fast access to browser changes outweighs frequent testing; use ESR when a longer certification interval is more valuable. Deploy the platform-appropriate package through your existing management system, deliver policies separately with ADMX, MDM, or JSON, and treat every policy and release-note example as version-sensitive. Mozilla’s public documentation remains available to all organizations, while Professional Support adds a paid route to expert triage and defined response handling. Recheck Mozilla’s current release notes, lifecycle dates, downloads, and policy reference before each production rollout.
