When Firefox will not fill a form, first identify which feature has failed. Firefox can suggest text you previously typed, fill saved addresses or cards, or use a separate AI extension; those systems have different settings, privacy implications, and failure modes. Test another ordinary form, verify that form history is being retained, then check address/card requirements, extensions, security software, and managed-device policies. Only after those checks should you try the version-specific preferences associated with reports after Firefox 154.0.
Identify what “AI form filling” means in your case
People often use one phrase for three unrelated functions. Correct diagnosis prevents you from changing an advanced preference when the website is simply marking a field in a way Firefox cannot recognize.

| What you expect | Firefox component | What it normally does | First place to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| A drop-down of text you typed before | Form history | Remembers previously entered text in ordinary web forms, such as search boxes or name fields. | Settings > Privacy & Security > History |
| A suggestion for your address or a saved payment card | Address or credit-card autofill | Offers structured profile data when Firefox recognizes enough fields and the feature is available for your region. | Autofill availability, field structure, and any administrator policy |
| AI-generated or multi-field completion, OCR, or per-site controls | Third-party extension | Adds capabilities that are not part of Firefox’s ordinary form history or native autofill. | The extension’s permissions, site controls, and API-key configuration |
A missing address prompt does not prove that text-form history is broken. Conversely, seeing old search terms does not mean address or card autofill is configured. Work through the branch that matches the behavior you actually see.

- Open a second website with a simple, ordinary form. Use a field such as a search box or name field where you have previously entered text.
- Type a few characters that you know have been used before and wait for Firefox’s suggestion list.
- Compare the result with the original site.
If suggestions appear on the second site, Firefox’s general form-history function is probably working. The original site may be limiting assistance or labeling its fields differently. Websites can use the HTML autocomplete attribute to describe the expected field type and whether automated assistance may be offered. A site-specific failure therefore requires inspecting that site’s form behavior rather than repeatedly clearing all of Firefox’s data.
If no ordinary form produces suggestions, continue with the global checks below. Mozilla Support distinguishes failures on a particular form from failures across forms, and that distinction determines the next step.
Fix global failures of ordinary form history
Confirm that Firefox remembers form entries
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the History section.
- Make sure Firefox is configured to remember search and form history. If a custom history option is selected, open its clearing settings.
- Check that form data is not selected for deletion whenever Firefox closes.
Firefox can remember what you have entered in forms on web pages, but it cannot suggest data that is being discarded at shutdown. A setting that clears form data on every close can make the feature appear to fail even though it works during the current session.

Remove one stale or incorrect entry
A single bad suggestion can make a field look broken. Clear the specific stored form entry and test again rather than deleting all browsing data immediately. Mozilla documents clearing form history for stale or incorrect suggestions. After removing the entry, reload the page, type the value again, and see whether a new suggestion is created.

Retest after restarting Firefox
Close Firefox completely, reopen it, and repeat the second-site test. This confirms whether the setting persists and helps separate a temporary extension or process problem from a retention problem.
Check extensions and software that erase stored data
Use a controlled extension test
- Temporarily disable installed extensions.
- Restart Firefox.
- Test the same ordinary form on the same site.
- Re-enable extensions one at a time if the suggestions return.
Mozilla identifies a conflicting extension as a possible cause when autocomplete fails across forms. A privacy, cleaning, password, or form-management add-on can alter fields or remove stored entries. Re-enabling extensions individually identifies the one that changes the result without requiring you to permanently remove unrelated add-ons.
Inspect security and privacy tools
Antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and privacy software can be configured to clear Firefox form history. Check their cleanup, browser-protection, and shutdown policies. If one of these tools is deleting form data, Firefox’s History setting will appear correct but suggestions will disappear after the external cleanup runs. Change only the rule responsible for deleting Firefox form history, then repeat the restart test.

Understand why address and card autofill behaves differently
Native address and credit-card autofill are separate from generic text-form history. Their prompts depend on Firefox recognizing a suitable form structure and seeing enough fields to identify the profile type. Availability also varies by region. A site that exposes only one unlabeled box may not provide the information Firefox needs to offer an address prompt, even when ordinary text suggestions work elsewhere.

| Symptom | What it indicates | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Old text appears in search or name fields, but no address prompt appears | Form history is functioning; address autofill has separate requirements. | Whether the form has enough recognizable address fields and whether the feature is available in your region. |
| No address or card prompt on one website | The site’s field labels or structure may not be recognized. | Try another form with several clearly labeled address or payment fields. |
| No address or card prompt anywhere on a work or school computer | An administrator policy may be controlling autofill. | Ask the administrator whether AutofillAddressEnabled is forced on or off. |
Do not use missing address suggestions as evidence that every Firefox autocomplete feature is disabled. Test each component with the kind of field it is designed to fill.
Check managed-computer policies
On an organization-managed computer, Firefox may receive policies that override your local choices. The AutofillAddressEnabled policy can force address saving and autofilling on or off. Mozilla’s administrator reference lists support beginning with Firefox 125, ESR 115.10, and Enterprise 149.
If the setting is controlled by policy, changing ordinary Settings options will not reliably restore the prompt. Contact the person who manages the device and provide the exact symptom, the Firefox version or ESR channel, and whether generic form-history suggestions still work. Do not attempt to bypass an organization’s policy on a managed device.

signon.storage.rust.enabledset tofalseextensions.formautofill.usemlset tofalse
This is a targeted diagnostic for the reported regression, not a universal repair for every form problem. Use it only after confirming that the failure is specifically native autofill and that ordinary form-history checks do not explain it.
- Record the current value of both preferences so you can restore them.
- In Firefox’s address bar, open
about:configand search forsignon.storage.rust.enabled. - Set that preference to
false. - Search for
extensions.formautofill.usemland set it tofalse. - Restart Firefox and retest the same autofill form.
- After updating Firefox, recheck the behavior and restore the original values if the workaround is no longer needed.
Advanced preferences can affect how Firefox stores or interprets data. Treat this change as reversible troubleshooting: change only the two named values, keep a record of what you changed, and do not assume that disabling them improves unrelated form-history failures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you mean an AI form-filling extension
Firefox’s native features do not provide every capability described as AI filling. A separate add-on may fill individual fields, accept image or OCR input, expose per-site controls, and be available on Firefox for Android. Mozilla Add-ons lists an extension named “AI Form Filler” with those functions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Verify the extension before troubleshooting its output
- Confirm that it is installed in the Firefox profile and enabled.
- Check whether the current site is allowed in the extension’s per-site controls.
- Verify that any user-supplied API key is present and that the extension reports it as configured.
- Test one simple field before attempting a long, multi-step form or an image upload.
The listing states that the user-supplied API key is stored locally. It also declares broad website permissions and collection of personally identifying information and website content. Read the current Mozilla Add-ons listing and its privacy disclosures before granting access, especially on forms containing identity, financial, medical, employment, or account-recovery information.

Separate an extension failure from a Firefox failure
Disable the AI extension and test native form history on an ordinary field. If native suggestions return, the extension is changing the page or intercepting fields. If native suggestions still fail, continue with Firefox’s History and security-software checks. Re-enable the extension only after the native path is working, then test the extension on a low-risk site.
An AI add-on is optional software, not a prerequisite for Firefox’s built-in form history or native address/card autofill. Its permissions and data practices should be evaluated as a separate decision.
Use the right fix for the symptom
| Observed result | Most likely area | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Works on a second site | Original site’s field labels, structure, or autocomplete instructions | Use the site’s supported fields or contact its operator; do not reset all Firefox history. |
| Fails on every ordinary form | Form-history retention, clearing-on-close, extension conflict, or external cleanup | Check Privacy & Security, clear one bad entry, disable extensions, and inspect security tools. |
| Text history works, address/card prompts do not | Separate autofill component | Test a form with enough recognizable fields, consider regional availability, and check policy on managed devices. |
| Failure began after Firefox 154.0 and affects native autofill | Version-specific regression possibility | Record values, test the two documented preferences, then update Firefox and restore values when appropriate. |
| Only the AI add-on fails | Extension permission, per-site control, API-key setup, or page compatibility | Check the add-on’s controls and disclosures, then isolate it from native Firefox behavior. |
Protect sensitive information while troubleshooting
- Use a low-risk test value when checking whether suggestions appear; do not paste real identity or payment details just to trigger a prompt.
- Do not share an API key in screenshots, support posts, or form fields.
- Review which sites an extension can access before enabling it on a financial or government website.
- Remember that clearing Firefox form history does not necessarily remove data held by a separate extension or external security product; check each product’s own storage and cleanup controls.
- On a managed computer, treat policy restrictions as intentional until the administrator confirms otherwise.
When to stop changing settings
Stop troubleshooting the browser when the evidence points to the website. A form can deliberately suppress suggestions through its HTML autocomplete instructions or use labels that Firefox does not recognize. If a second ordinary form works, your browser-wide settings are not the right place to spend more time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLikewise, stop changing native preferences when only a third-party AI extension is failing. Extension permissions, API configuration, and the site’s compatibility are separate from Firefox’s built-in form history. Restore any advanced preference changed for the Firefox 154.0 diagnostic once an update or a different fix resolves the issue.
A concise recovery sequence
- Classify the failure as site-specific, global form history, address/card autofill, or an AI extension.
- Test a second ordinary form.
- For global history failures, verify that Firefox remembers search and form history and does not clear form data on close.
- Clear the one stale entry involved in the test.
- Disable extensions, restart Firefox, and retest.
- Check antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and privacy-tool cleanup rules.
- For address/card issues, test a form with enough recognizable fields, account for regional availability, and ask about
AutofillAddressEnabledon managed devices. - For a native autofill regression appearing after Firefox 154.0, record and temporarily test the two documented preferences, then update and restore them as appropriate.
- For an AI extension, verify per-site access, API-key configuration, permissions, and data-collection disclosures.
This sequence fixes the common configuration problems without treating every missing suggestion as an AI failure or resorting immediately to irreversible browser resets.
