Amazon’s announcement describes redesigned navigation and audio controls, but does not document removal of Dolby Digital, 5.1, 7.1, or Atmos. Work through the signal path, detected capabilities, and output settings in order.
What changed in the 2026 Fire TV interface
Amazon began rolling out the redesigned Fire TV interface in February 2026. It is available worldwide on current-generation Fire TV Stick devices and Amazon Ember smart TVs, and has also launched on Hisense Fire TV televisions, with additional devices planned. The redesign changes layouts, typography, color gradients, spacing, and the Home-button shortcut panel; that panel includes audio and display controls. Amazon reports speed improvements of up to 20–30% on devices customers already own.

Those changes can make an audio option harder to find or trigger a new HDMI handshake, but Amazon has not stated that the redesign disables surround formats. A stereo result means the connected equipment, cable, routing, selected mode, app stream, or detected capabilities need checking.
1. Run Fire TV’s audio diagnostic first
- Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics.
- Start Troubleshoot Audio/Video Issues.
- Choose No Audio when the wizard asks what is wrong.
- Restart Fire TV if the problem remains, then test the same content again.
Amazon notes that Audio/Video Diagnostics is unavailable on some Fire TV devices. If the menu is missing, continue with the capability and connection checks below rather than assuming the update removed surround sound.

2. Check the formats Fire TV actually detects
Open the audio or diagnostics information that lists available Dolby and surround formats. If the format you want is not listed, Amazon says the current equipment setup cannot play it. Check every component: the Fire TV model, television, soundbar or AV receiver, speakers, and—when using Atmos—the required height-speaker configuration.
- A Fire TV may support a format that the television or receiver cannot decode.
- A television may support ARC but not the bandwidth or codecs available through eARC.
- A soundbar can accept Dolby Digital while lacking Dolby Atmos decoding or height channels.
- An app may provide a surround track only with a compatible subscription and content version.
Do not promise Atmos based only on the Fire TV specification. Multichannel output survives only when the whole chain and the playing app support the same format.
3. Replace connection and routing bottlenecks
Use high-speed HDMI instead of optical
Amazon states that optical cables do not fully support surround sound. Replace an optical link with a high-speed HDMI connection where your equipment allows it. Verify that the cable is firmly seated and that you are using the television’s labeled ARC or eARC port, not an ordinary HDMI input.

Bypass a television that is limiting the handshake
For difficult handshakes, connect Fire TV directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar or AV receiver, then connect that device to the television’s HDMI ARC input. This routing lets the soundbar or receiver receive the source signal before the television processes it. If direct routing restores 5.1 or Atmos, the television’s pass-through settings, ARC implementation, or codec support was the limiting point.

4. Select a compatible digital-audio mode
On Fire TV Smart TV models, open Settings > Display & Audio. The Digital Audio Format menu can include PCM, Dolby Digital, Passthrough, and Auto. Menu labels vary by model.
- PCM: The television or Fire TV decodes audio and sends PCM. This can restore sound but may reduce a multichannel signal to the channels that the path can carry.
- Dolby Digital: Selects Dolby Digital when the connected equipment supports it.
- Passthrough: Can carry up to 7.1 channels when the connected equipment supports the format and the connection can transport it.
- Auto: Chooses a format based on the connected device’s reported capabilities.
Start with Auto after correcting the wiring. Try Passthrough when the receiver or soundbar is the intended decoder. If a mode produces silence, return to Auto or PCM and recheck the receiver’s input and decoding indicators.

5. Verify Dolby output and the app stream
Amazon’s developer guidance places Dolby controls at Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio > Dolby Digital Output. Confirm that Dolby output is enabled where the model exposes that setting. Then test a title known to include a surround track.

When the endpoint cannot handle Dolby, an app should select a non-Dolby stream or decode to PCM. Therefore, one app playing stereo does not prove that Fire TV is globally limited. Check the title’s audio-language or format selector, your subscription tier, and another app before changing hardware.

- Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Alexa Home Theater.
- Select Create Alexa Home Theater.
- Choose the compatible Echo speakers and optional subwoofer.
- Set Home Theater as Audio Output, rather than Television.
- Use Lip Sync Tuning if voices and images do not align.
Supported configurations can use up to five Echo speakers and one optional subwoofer. If the speakers are mixed models or the Fire TV is outside the supported list, the feature may not appear or may not behave as expected.
When the update is not the real cause
A post-update failure can coincide with a changed TV input, a receiver reset, a loose HDMI cable, an unsupported app track, or a capability handshake that was renegotiated during reboot. The reliable diagnosis is the format Fire TV detects and the result after each controlled change—not the date the interface appeared. Restore the chain one variable at a time: diagnostic, capability check, high-speed HDMI, direct routing, compatible output mode, app verification, and only then Alexa Home Theater.
