Buy the Google TV Streamer if your home runs on Google Home and you want a wired Ethernet port. Buy a Fire TV Stick if you want Alexa control and a compact stick that plugs directly into an HDMI port. The answer depends on which Fire TV Stick you mean, because Amazon sells several generations, so this comparison uses the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) as its Fire TV reference.
Start by identifying the Fire TV model
“Fire TV Stick” is a product family, not a single device. Amazon’s official Fire TV device specifications list at least three current models:

- Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023)
- Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025)
- Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025)
Specifications do not carry over between these models. The figures below apply only to the 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023). If you are looking at a 2025 model, open its own specification page before comparing it with the Google TV Streamer, and check its live price in your marketplace on the day you buy.

Smart-home fit: Google Home or Alexa
Your existing ecosystem matters more than any single spec. The Google TV Streamer is built around Google Home. Google also lists Matter and Thread border-router support, which means the device can act as a bridge for compatible Thread devices on your home network. If you already use Matter or Thread gadgets, that is a practical reason to choose it.

The Fire TV Stick’s smart-home value comes from Alexa. Amazon’s Fire TV pages describe Alexa features on Fire TV devices, but the exact features depend on the model you choose. If your household runs on Alexa speakers, routines and voice control, a Fire TV Stick fits that setup naturally. If it runs on Google Home, the Streamer is the more direct match.

Network connection: wired Ethernet versus Wi-Fi generation
The two devices take different routes to a good connection. The Google TV Streamer includes a gigabit Ethernet port, so you can connect it by cable to your router and avoid depending on Wi-Fi. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max supports Wi-Fi 6E, which is a newer Wi-Fi generation, but a Wi-Fi standard only helps if your router and the device’s position in the home also support it.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Neither feature guarantees faster streaming. A wired connection helps most when the TV sits far from the router or in a crowded Wi-Fi environment. If the TV is close to a strong router and your internet plan is the real bottleneck, the difference may be small. If you need a wired connection, confirm the Fire TV model you are considering has an Ethernet option before assuming it does.
Setup and total cost
The Google TV Streamer has a practical cost beyond its list price. Google states that a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately, so budget for it before you buy. Use a cable that carries the HDMI 2.1 certification rather than any generic HDMI cable. The Google Store listing is the reference for that requirement.

- Easier than ever to set up – Now with Direct Power, it's powered by your TV with the included USB-C cable and eliminates the need for a wall adapter.
Installation also differs. A Fire TV Stick is a stick that sits behind the television. The Streamer is a set-top style box with its own HDMI and power cables, which takes more shelf or cabinet space but can be easier to position and reach with a cable. Do not assume the stick is always the simpler setup. A stick mounted behind a TV with limited airflow or in a tight gap can be harder to manage than a small box on a shelf.

- Whether you need a wired connection and whether your chosen Fire TV model offers one.
- Whether you already use Google Home, Matter, Thread, or Alexa.
Picture and sound formats
Google lists up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second for the Streamer, with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG support. Amazon’s 4K Max page does not list its format support in the sources used here, so do not assume it matches. Check the Fire TV model’s specifications for its supported formats.

A format label does not guarantee a better picture or sound. The format only helps if your television supports it, your streaming apps offer that version of the content, and your audio chain passes it through. Confirm those three points before choosing a device for its format list alone.
Casting and remote
Google highlights casting from compatible apps to the Streamer, and its comparison page lists a customizable button and a Find My Remote feature. Those are useful if you cast from phones or tablets and tend to lose the remote. The sources used here do not establish how the Fire TV Stick’s remote compares on these points, so check the remote details on the model’s page before deciding on that basis.
Amazon’s own description of the 4K Max
Amazon’s Fire TV device specifications describe the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) as “Amazon’s most powerful streaming stick with Wi-Fi 6E support and Ambient Experience.” That is Amazon’s product positioning rather than an independent performance test, so treat it as a description of what the device is designed to offer.
