To install a VPN on a Fire TV Stick, first identify the device’s operating system and model, then look for your provider’s app in the Amazon Appstore. The steps differ between Fire OS and Vega OS: ExpressVPN documents separate installation paths for both, while Private Internet Access (PIA) says its app is not currently compatible with Vega OS.
Set up your Fire TV Stick
Complete Amazon’s device setup before installing a VPN. You’ll need the Stick and its in-box accessories, a TV with an available HDMI port, an Amazon account, and an internet connection with its Wi-Fi details.

- Connect the Stick to an available HDMI port on your TV.
- Connect the Stick to wall power. Amazon’s setup instructions say not to power it by plugging its USB cable directly into the TV.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the Stick.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to or create an Amazon account.
See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions if you need help with the initial connection.

Check the operating system and model
Before following a VPN guide, open Settings > My Fire TV > About. Note the device model and software version. ExpressVPN’s guide says Fire OS devices identify Fire OS in the version information; a Vega OS device may show an OS version without the Fire OS label. Menu names and available apps can vary by device, so do not assume that instructions for one model or OS apply to another.

Look for the VPN app in the Amazon Appstore
On Fire TV, open Find and search for the VPN provider’s app, or use Alexa voice search. Select the correct app and choose Get or the shopping-basket icon. Amazon notes that an account check may be required for Appstore purchases. After installation, open the app, sign in, and respond to the VPN connection permission prompt if it appears.
Amazon’s Fire TV app-download instructions describe this standard Appstore process. App availability depends on the device and operating system; if the app does not appear, check the VPN provider’s instructions for your exact OS before trying another method.

Follow the provider’s instructions for your OS
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN documents instructions for Fire OS 6 and later, as well as a separate Vega OS path. For Fire OS, its normal installation route is through the Amazon Appstore. Once installed, open ExpressVPN, sign in, approve the operating system’s VPN connection prompt, and tap the app’s power button to connect. The provider also describes a sideloading alternative for supported Fire OS cases where its app is unavailable.

Search for “Private Internet Access,” select “VPN by Private Internet Access,” download it, sign in, and accept the VPN permission prompt. PIA also describes a Downloader-based manual installation route for compatible Fire OS devices.
PIA says it is not currently compatible with Amazon Vega OS. Do not use its APK or Downloader route on a Vega OS device as a workaround. Check PIA’s Fire Stick and Fire TV installation guide for its current OS-specific steps.

When sideloading is—and is not—an option
Sideloading means installing an app outside the Amazon Appstore. Amazon’s developer documentation describes installing apps for development and testing, including an ADB command-line method. That document was last updated October 29, 2020, so it is technical background—not confirmation that every current Fire TV model permits sideloading or that a particular VPN app will work when installed that way.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Use sideloading only if your VPN provider explicitly supports it for your Fire TV OS and model.
- Do not treat it as a way around OS incompatibility: ExpressVPN says sideloading is unsupported on Vega OS, and PIA says it is not compatible with Vega OS.
- For Amazon’s development-focused background, see Install and Run Your App (Fire TV).
If the app is missing or will not connect
- The app does not appear in search: Recheck the OS and model, then consult the provider’s current instructions. Availability can depend on the device and OS.
- The app installs but cannot connect: Open it, sign in, and accept the operating system’s VPN connection prompt. If the app reports that the device is unsupported, verify compatibility with the provider rather than trying an unapproved installation method.
- You are unsure which installation guide applies: Return to Settings > My Fire TV > About and use the OS and model information to choose the provider’s matching instructions.
These setup instructions establish installation and compatibility paths, not VPN speed, privacy guarantees, or access to any particular streaming catalog. Those outcomes are not established by the cited guides.
