You can use an existing Fire TV Stick as a photo display through its screensaver, with personal or shared photos selected in Amazon Photos. The setup costs nothing extra if you already have a working stick, an HDMI-equipped TV, Wi-Fi, an Amazon account and enough photo storage. First check which display options your particular Fire TV model supports.
Check which photo display mode your Fire TV supports
Fire TV’s screensaver can be personalized to show photos from Amazon Photos. Amazon also offers Ambient Experience on some Fire TV devices, but it is a separate feature and is not available on every model. On the Fire TV, open Settings > Display & Sounds and look for Ambient Experience before planning to use it. If that option is absent, use the screensaver route if it is available on your device.

Amazon describes the feature this way: “Make your Echo Show, Echo Spot, or Fire TV display your photos and the photos shared by people you invite.” See Amazon’s guide to personalizing Echo Show and Fire TV devices with Amazon Photos.

Set up your photos as the screensaver
- Confirm the basics. The Stick must be connected to an HDMI-equipped television, Wi-Fi or internet, and an Amazon account. Amazon’s setup guide lists the HDMI extender as optional. See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions.
- Prepare the photo library. Sign in to Amazon Photos with the Amazon account you use on Fire TV, then choose the personal photos or albums you want available for display. You can also display photos shared by people you invite.
- Open the Fire TV screensaver settings. From the device’s Settings, find the screensaver or display personalization controls and select the Amazon Photos photos or albums you want shown. Labels and menu layout can differ across Fire TV models and software versions; Amazon’s personalization help page describes the supported photo-display controls.
- Let the screensaver start. When Fire TV enters its screensaver, it can display the selected photos. Use the screensaver controls to manage which photos are currently included.
What makes the setup free—and what may affect cost
There is no need to buy a dedicated frame if your existing Stick and TV can do the job. The zero-extra-cost outcome depends on already having the necessary hardware, internet connection, Amazon account and photo storage; it is not a guarantee that every reader’s setup will be free.

Choose between the screensaver and Ambient Experience
- Fire TV screensaver: The relevant option for personalizing a standard Fire TV photo display. Start here if Ambient Experience is not listed for your device.
- Ambient Experience: A distinct feature with device-dependent availability. Confirm that it appears under Settings > Display & Sounds rather than assuming your Stick supports it. Amazon also warns that Ambient Experience may increase Fire TV device energy consumption, so that consideration matters if you intend to leave it running for long periods. See Amazon’s Ambient Experience overview.
If your photos do not appear
- Check the account: Make sure Fire TV and Amazon Photos are using the Amazon account that contains the selected pictures.
- Check selection and sharing: Confirm the intended photos or album are enabled for display, and that shared photos have been made available to you.
- Check the mode: If Ambient Experience is missing from Settings > Display & Sounds, it is not offered in that device’s menu; use the screensaver controls instead.
- Check the connection: Verify the Stick is connected to Wi-Fi and remains signed in to the Amazon account. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup guide covers the basic connection requirements.
