Whether the Max is worth the extra cost depends on the current price difference, which can change by retailer and date.
What is different between the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max?
Amazon’s specifications compare the second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max, both released in 2023. Their main distinctions are Wi-Fi support, listed storage and the Max’s Ambient Experience feature.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Fire TV Stick 4K Max if you want Wi-Fi 6E
The Max supports the 6 GHz band as part of tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, in addition to 2.4 and 5 GHz. That only matters if your router and network setup support Wi-Fi 6E and you can use the 6 GHz band where you watch. Compatibility alone does not guarantee faster streaming: actual results depend on the network and local conditions. If your setup does not support 6E, this specification is not by itself a reason to upgrade.

Choose the Max if you want more listed storage
Amazon lists 16 GB for the Max and 8 GB for the standard 4K. The larger capacity may be useful if you expect to install more apps or games, but the specifications do not quantify how much additional usable space that translates to or how it changes performance.
Choose the Max if Ambient Experience matters to you
Ambient Experience is a feature Amazon highlights for the Max. If you want that experience, it is a clear reason to favor this model. If you do not, it need not factor into your decision.

Choose the standard 4K if shared streaming formats are what you need
Amazon lists 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos for both sticks. Those format names do not distinguish the Max from the standard model in the listed specifications. Your TV, audio equipment, content and service must also support the formats you want to use.
Is the 4K Max worth paying more for?
That depends on the price you see when you buy. No live prices, discounts or stock levels were verified here, so there is no reliable fixed premium to recommend. Compare the current listings for the same generation, and check the bundle contents and remote included in your region. If the price gap is small and you can use the Max’s Wi-Fi 6E, storage or Ambient Experience advantage, the Max is the more feature-rich choice. If the gap is substantial and those features do not matter to you, the standard 4K retains the core video and audio formats Amazon lists for both.
