If you mean the 2023 second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K, that model runs Fire OS 8. The name “Fire TV Stick 4K” is also used for a separate 2026 third-generation model, so confirm the generation before comparing prices or specifications.
Which Fire TV Stick 4K are you comparing?
“Fire TV Stick 4K” does not identify just one device. Amazon lists a 2023 second-generation model and a distinct 2026 third-generation model. The comparison below uses the 2023 second-generation Stick 4K where it names a specific model; do not assume its specifications apply to the 2026 device. Amazon’s device identification material distinguishes the generations.

Does Vega OS change which one you should buy?
Yes, if your choice depends on particular apps or a platform-dependent setup. Amazon identifies the 2025 Select as its first Fire TV Stick moving to Vega OS; the 2023 second-generation Stick 4K is listed with Fire OS 8. That makes app compatibility the key practical check, rather than assuming the two sticks behave identically because they share the Fire TV name. Amazon’s developer portal describes the Vega transition.

What picture formats are confirmed?
Amazon presents the Select as a 4K streamer with HDR10+ support. Amazon’s product information is the basis for those claims. Make sure your TV and the content you watch can use the formats you care about; the Select’s stated support alone does not guarantee that every title will play in HDR10+.
For the 2023 second-generation Stick 4K, confirm the format specifications for that exact generation before treating it as a direct format-by-format comparison. The available information does not establish a complete, comparable list of video or audio formats for both devices, so it does not support declaring a picture or sound winner.

How should price affect the decision?
Amazon announced the Select at a US launch price of $39.99 in 2025. That is a historical launch price, not a current quote or a promise of availability in every region. Amazon’s 2025 launch announcement is the source for that figure. Compare current local prices for the exact generations you are considering; neither device’s current marketplace price is established here.
Amazon calls the Select “our most affordable 4K streaming stick yet” in its product-page wording. That is Amazon’s promotional claim, not an independently verified current-price comparison. A value winner depends on today’s prices and whether the Select’s Vega OS supports your needs.

So, which one should you buy?
- Choose the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Select if its current price suits you, you want a 4K device with Amazon-stated HDR10+ support, and you have confirmed that your essential apps and setup work with Vega OS.
- Consider the 2023 second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K if Fire OS 8 better fits your app or setup requirements, and the exact model is available at a competitive current price.
- Pause before ordering if the listing simply says “Fire TV Stick 4K.” Verify whether it is the 2023 second-generation or 2026 third-generation device; the generations should not be treated as interchangeable.
There is not enough directly comparable evidence here to call one faster, more responsive, or better in image quality. The strongest basis for choosing is the operating system and app compatibility, followed by confirmed features and the price you can actually buy each model for.
