Choose the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) for Alexa, Amazon’s Fire TV interface, Wi‑Fi 6, and HDR10+. Choose the Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820R2 for Dolby Vision, Roku’s interface, voice search, and a remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls. Neither is universally better: your television’s HDR support, home network, preferred voice assistant, required apps, exact model number, and live price should decide the purchase.
Quick verdict
Both devices are 4K streaming sticks, but they prioritize different ecosystems and HDR formats. The Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) has the clearer specification advantage for wireless connectivity: Amazon lists Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, 8 GB of internal storage, and a quad-core 1.7 GHz processor. Roku documents Dolby Vision support and a long-range Wi‑Fi receiver, but does not name a Wi‑Fi generation for the Streaming Stick 4K.

Confirm the exact models before comparing
“Fire TV Stick 4K” is used for multiple generations. This comparison is specifically about the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026). Older Fire TV Stick 4K listings can have different processors, wireless standards, remotes, and HDR support.

Roku’s general Streaming Stick pages also span more than one model. The product identified for this comparison is Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820R2. Roku’s current general page also displays model 3840R, which belongs to a newer Streaming Stick family. Read the model number in the listing, on the package, or in the device information screen rather than relying only on the product name.
Picture quality: Dolby Vision gives Roku the format advantage
What both sticks mean by 4K
Both output 4K video. Roku’s FAQ defines 4K as 3840×2160 pixels—four times the pixel count of 1080p HD. A 4K output setting does not make a lower-resolution movie or show native 4K; the service must provide a 4K stream and your television must accept it.
HDR formats on each device
Amazon lists HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG for the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K. Roku lists HDR10+ and Dolby Vision for the Streaming Stick 4K. Therefore, Roku has the documented Dolby Vision advantage in this head-to-head comparison, while Fire TV lists HLG and Roku’s published specification does not.
Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are dynamic HDR formats: compatible content can carry scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame brightness and color instructions. HDR10 is a baseline static HDR format, and HLG is commonly used for broadcast-oriented HDR. The practical result depends on the combination of stick, television, app, title, and regional catalog.
Your television and the title still control HDR
A listed format cannot add Dolby Vision or HDR10+ to a television that lacks that format. If the TV supports only HDR10, both sticks will fall back to a compatible mode. The same applies when a particular movie or episode is available only in SDR or HDR10. Before paying extra for a feature, check the TV’s manual and the service’s listing for the titles you actually watch.

For a Dolby Vision television and a catalog that offers Dolby Vision titles, Roku is the safer choice because that format is explicitly documented. For an HDR10+ television, both devices list HDR10+, so the decision shifts to interface, wireless, voice control, and price.
Speed and hardware: what is known, and what is not
Amazon’s 20–40% claim
Amazon says its own comparison found the new Fire TV Stick 4K reached content “nearly 20–40% faster than a similarly priced 4K stick from another leading brand.” This is an Amazon test claim from 2026, not an independent, controlled Fire TV-versus-Roku benchmark. It does not establish that every app opens 20–40% faster, that video buffers less often, or that Fire TV is always faster on your network.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the claim as an indication that Amazon targeted quicker startup and navigation, not as a guaranteed performance difference. Wi‑Fi signal, router congestion, app updates, account state, and the television’s HDMI and power behavior can all affect how quickly a screen appears.
Fire TV’s published hardware
Amazon specifies 8 GB of internal storage, a quad-core 1.7 GHz processor, Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and Bluetooth Low Energy. The storage is for the operating system and installed apps, so it is not equivalent to a large personal media drive. Bluetooth 5.3 can matter if you pair compatible headphones, speakers, controllers, or other accessories, but accessory compatibility remains device- and app-dependent.
Roku’s published hardware
For the Streaming Stick 4K, Roku emphasizes its compact stick design and long-range Wi‑Fi receiver. Roku’s current product page lists 0.90 ounces (26 g) for the current stick page, but that page covers more than one model, so confirm that the weight applies to the 3820R2 package you are buying. Roku does not publish a processor speed or internal-storage figure in the supplied specifications, so a numerical CPU or storage comparison would be unsupported.

Wireless performance: Wi‑Fi 6 versus a long-range receiver
Fire TV has the clearer standards label: Wi‑Fi 6. That can be useful with a compatible Wi‑Fi 6 router, especially in a busy home with many connected devices. It does not guarantee a particular download speed, range, or buffer-free stream; the router, wall construction, interference, broadband plan, and service bitrate still matter.

Roku describes a long-range Wi‑Fi receiver intended to maintain a stronger connection farther from the router. Roku does not name a Wi‑Fi generation, and the claim is not a controlled speed test. Do not conclude that Roku is faster or that Fire TV has better range solely from these descriptions. If the television is in a distant room, place the router or access point where both sticks can receive a strong signal, then compare stability in your own home.
Interface and voice control
When Fire TV and Alexa fit better
Fire TV is the natural choice if you already use Alexa or want Amazon’s interface across your television and other compatible devices. Alexa voice control can make searching and launching content more convenient for households that already use Alexa routines or speakers. The Fire TV experience is also the reason to choose this model when you prefer Amazon’s organization and recommendations over Roku’s layout.
When Roku’s interface and remote fit better
Roku is the better match if you prefer Roku’s platform and a simple voice-search remote. The Roku guidance for this model highlights TV power, volume, and mute controls on the included remote, reducing the need to keep a separate television remote for everyday adjustments. Voice search is useful for finding a title or actor without typing with directional buttons.
Voice features do not make either stick a universal controller. They depend on the remote, the app, the language and region supported by the service, and the television’s compatibility with the connected HDMI setup.

Power, HDMI, and physical setup
Both products are HDMI sticks rather than set-top boxes. You plug the stick into an HDMI input and provide USB power. Amazon describes direct power for the Fire TV Stick 4K through a TV USB port with the included cable. Roku includes a USB-C-to-USB-A power cable and uses an HDMI plug-in design.
- Check the television. Confirm that it has a free HDMI input, a 4K-capable display path, and support for the HDR format you want. If you plan to use Dolby Vision, verify Dolby Vision support in the TV specifications.
- Connect HDMI. Insert the chosen stick into the television’s HDMI port. If the port is difficult to reach or the stick presses against the wall, use a compatible HDMI extension; check the package and the television’s clearance before buying an accessory.
- Connect power. Attach the supplied USB cable and power source. For Fire TV, Amazon describes TV-USB direct power; for Roku, use the included USB-C-to-USB-A cable. If the television’s USB port cannot provide stable power, use a suitable power source recommended for the device.
- Select the input. Switch the television to the HDMI input used by the stick. A blank screen usually means the wrong input, an incomplete power connection, or an HDMI handshake problem.
- Pair the remote. Follow the on-screen pairing prompt. Keep the remote close to the stick during first setup and replace or recharge its batteries if pairing does not begin.
- Join Wi‑Fi. Select your home network and enter its password. Put the router or access point where the stick can receive a strong signal; a long-range receiver or Wi‑Fi 6 label cannot overcome a dead zone.
- Finish account and software setup. Sign in to the platform account requested on screen, allow system updates to complete, and install only the streaming apps you need. App availability and catalog rights vary by country.
- Test playback. Start a known 4K title, open the playback information supplied by the app or television, and confirm that the TV reports the expected resolution and HDR mode. A 4K television alone does not prove that the stream is 4K.
App availability and regional limits
Neither manufacturer’s platform guarantees the same app catalog in every country. Rights, language support, subscription tiers, and launch dates vary by market. Make a list of the services your household actually uses and verify that each one is available on the platform in your country before purchasing. A stick with the correct HDR format is still a poor choice if it cannot run a required service.
Price and value
Amazon announced a US launch price of $59.99 for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026). That is a dated launch figure, not a promise that every retailer or country will charge the same amount.
A dated comparison page showed the Roku Streaming Stick 4K at a limited-time US price of $44.99 against a $79.99 reference price. Because that offer was promotional and time-limited, verify the live checkout total, shipping, taxes, bundle contents, and model number. Do not compare a discounted Roku listing with a full-price Fire TV listing and call the difference permanent.
Include the cost of any needed HDMI extension, power adapter, replacement remote, or subscription in your budget. The sticks do not include the cost of streaming subscriptions, and the availability of bundled accessories can differ by retailer and region.
Which one should you buy?
Choose Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) if:
- You use Alexa and want a Fire TV interface.
- Your router supports Wi‑Fi 6 and you want the device with that wireless standard explicitly listed.
- Your TV and services use HDR10+ or HLG rather than Dolby Vision.
- You value the published 8 GB storage, quad-core 1.7 GHz processor, and Bluetooth 5.3 specifications.
- The current price is close to the $59.99 US launch reference or otherwise better than the Roku offer you can actually buy.
Choose Roku Streaming Stick 4K (3820R2) if:
- Your television supports Dolby Vision and you watch titles offered in Dolby Vision.
- You prefer Roku’s interface and voice search.
- You want the included remote’s TV power, volume, and mute controls.
- Your television is far from the router and the long-range Wi‑Fi receiver is attractive, while recognizing that Roku does not publish a Wi‑Fi generation or controlled speed result.
- The listing is definitely model 3820R2 and its live price is lower than the Fire TV option.
Use a tie-breaker when both fit
Start with HDR compatibility: Dolby Vision TV and content favor Roku; HDR10+ or HLG requirements can favor Fire TV depending on the TV. Next choose the voice ecosystem, then check app availability in your country. Finally compare the exact model numbers and checkout prices on the day you buy.
Troubleshooting after installation
Black screen or no 4K picture
- Confirm that the television is on the HDMI input used by the stick.
- Reconnect USB power and HDMI, then try another HDMI input.
- Check that the TV input and cable path support 4K. If only HD appears, verify that the title and service provide 4K.
- For HDR problems, confirm that the television supports the format being requested. A stick cannot create Dolby Vision or HDR10+ on an incompatible panel.
Buffering or unstable playback
- Test the network near the television and reduce distance or obstructions between the router and stick.
- Pause large downloads or other high-bandwidth activity on the network.
- Restart the stick and router, then retry the same title.
- Do not infer a hardware defect from one slow stream; service congestion and title bitrate can change over time.
Remote or voice search does not work
- Move the remote close to the stick during pairing.
- Check batteries and complete the on-screen pairing process again.
- Confirm that the television responds to the Roku remote’s power, volume, and mute commands; HDMI and TV compatibility can affect those controls.
- Check language, region, and app support if a voice search returns no result.
Bottom line
Roku wins the narrow Dolby Vision question because Dolby Vision is explicitly listed for the Streaming Stick 4K, while the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K specification lists HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. Fire TV wins for the Alexa ecosystem and has the more specific wireless and hardware specification sheet, including Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, 8 GB storage, and a quad-core 1.7 GHz processor. Buy based on the exact model number, your television’s HDR formats, the services available where you live, and the price shown at checkout—not on a generic “4K stick” label.
