Recruitment starts when monastery exploration opens in Chapter 2. Your chosen house’s students join automatically; students from the other two houses must be scouted by raising Byleth’s relevant skill and stat, or by building enough support for a chance at an automatic offer. Faculty have separate chapter and level gates, while route locks, the timeskip, and the Part I-only Ashen Wolves window can permanently change who is available.
Spoiler warning: The route and timeskip sections reveal recruitment outcomes and Chapter 11–15 events.

How recruitment works
At the beginning of a new game, choose Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or Golden Deer. Every student in that house is yours without a scouting check. From Chapter 2 onward, explore the monastery on free days and speak to students from the other houses to see what they require.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A student normally checks two things about Byleth: one weapon or skill rank and one underlying stat. The requirement combinations documented by Triangle Attack generally use skill ranks of D, C, B, or B+ and stat targets of 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30. For example, a student might ask for Bow C and Strength 20, or Authority B and Charm 25. These are Byleth’s requirements, not the student’s.
#1 Best Overall
- Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros from its headquarters at Garreg Mach Monastery, home to the Officers Academy, where you’re invited to teach one of its three mighty houses: The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer.
- Which house will you choose?
- As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.
When the requirement is met, choose the recruitment conversation option and the student joins. If you fail or decline the offer, Serenes Forest reports that the option is locked only for the current weekend; it becomes available again on the following weekend. That makes a failed check inconvenient rather than permanently fatal, provided the character is still recruitable on your route and at that point in the story.
Support changes the check
Support with Byleth makes recruitment substantially easier. Each support tier reduces the student’s skill requirement in steps and lowers the stat requirement by 20 percent per tier, according to Triangle Attack’s recruitment documentation. An A support allows student recruitment regardless of the listed skill or stat requirement. A B support can also produce a weekday request in which the student asks to join and ignores the normal requirements, but the request is chance-based.
The visible support letter can lag behind the hidden support points. If a character appears close to B or A, keep using support-building activities instead of assuming the displayed letter is current. A support conversation may need to become available before the lower requirement is applied.

Underlying stats matter
Class modifiers, temporary bonuses, and ability-based increases do not count toward a student’s recruitment check. Serenes Forest specifically advises checking Byleth’s underlying stat. If a class raises Strength to 20 but Byleth’s personal Strength is below the target, the game can still reject the attempt. Check the inventory and status screens with temporary or class effects excluded before deciding that a requirement has been met.
Student requirements: what to raise and when
There is no single stat that recruits everyone. The practical approach is to identify the students you want, note each one’s skill and stat, and use instruction and activity points to cover the most demanding checks first. The following examples are no-support requirements recorded by Triangle Attack:
| Student | Byleth skill | Byleth stat | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bernadetta | Bow C | Strength 20 | Build Bow while raising Byleth’s base Strength. |
| Dorothea | Authority B | Charm 25 | Authority instruction and monastery activities that improve Charm are both useful. |
| Felix | Sword B+ | Speed 15 | The B+ Sword rank is the heavier part of this check for many saves. |
| Lysithea | Faith B | Magic 15 | Faith instruction paired with Magic growth covers both sides. |
| Hilda | Axe C | Charm 30 | The high Charm target makes support especially valuable. |
These examples illustrate the range rather than replacing a complete in-game check. The game’s requirements vary by student and can be reduced by support. If you are trying to recruit several students, prioritize a skill that appears repeatedly in your target list, then use gifts and meals to compensate for a difficult stat target.
Why support is usually more efficient than grinding
Support reduces both parts of the check, while raising a weapon skill helps only the skill side and normal level-ups do not guarantee the required stat. Meals, gifts, lost items, choir practice, mission assistance, and advice answers all help build support with a target. These activities also consume limited monastery time, so start with characters whose requirements are high or whose availability is restricted.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Do not wait for the final week before the timeskip if a student is important to your plan. A B-support request can happen on a free weekday, but Serenes Forest describes the chance as inconsistent. Treat it as a bonus rather than a schedule. Caspar and Ferdinand cannot use this automatic B-support route before Part 2 in a normal first run because their B supports are unavailable during Part I.
Faculty and knights use different gates
Faculty recruitment does not follow the student weapon-and-stat pattern. Chapter progression and Byleth’s level are the main gates, and support can lower the level threshold without removing the chapter requirement. Triangle Attack gives these timing examples:
| Character | Earliest chapter listed | Byleth level listed | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catherine | Chapter 4 | 15 | Support can reduce the level threshold; route restrictions still apply. |
| Cyril | Chapter 5 | 10 | Support can reduce the level threshold; route restrictions still apply. |
| Shamir | Chapter 6 | 15 | Support can reduce the level threshold; route restrictions still apply. |
| Hanneman | Chapter 8 | 15 | Support can reduce the level threshold; route restrictions still apply. |
| Manuela | Chapter 8 | 15 | Support can reduce the level threshold; route restrictions still apply. |
Approach a faculty member after the chapter gate opens, then check Byleth’s level and support. If the conversation does not offer recruitment, continue the story and build support rather than repeatedly reloading the same week. A route decision can also override an otherwise valid level check.
Route locks and characters who require special planning
Some characters are tied to their original house or to a particular route. No amount of skill grinding can bypass these locks.
House leaders and retainers
- Edelgard and Hubert: They cannot be recruited outside Black Eagles.
- Dimitri and Dedue: They cannot be recruited outside Blue Lions.
- Claude: He cannot be recruited outside Golden Deer.
Choose your starting house with these exclusions in mind. You can recruit many students across houses, but you cannot assemble every named playable character on one route.
Hilda’s exception
Hilda is a special case. Triangle Attack and Serenes Forest note that she can join Black Eagles only on the Silver Snow route, in Chapter 12. Support-building for that recruitment is restricted until then. On other routes, use the ordinary timing and requirement information available for her; on Black Eagles, do not spend Part I expecting a normal early invitation that the route does not permit.
Flayn, Catherine, Cyril, and Shamir on Black Eagles
Flayn joins automatically in Chapter 7, but leaves if you choose Crimson Flower in Chapter 11. This is a route outcome, not a failed recruitment check.

- Command Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters like Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude in epic real-time battles
- Play through three distinct storylines set in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses universe, each with a different ending, from the point of view of a new protagonist, Shez.
- Combine the action-packed Warriors-style gameplay with the strategy and style of the Fire Emblem series
- Fight through hordes of enemies with Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters and their distinct abilities
- Use Fire Emblem series mechanics like the weapons triangle, character classes, crests, and battalions to tailor your strategy
Catherine and Cyril cannot be recruited into Black Eagles except on Silver Snow, where they join automatically in Chapter 12. Shamir also joins Silver Snow automatically in Chapter 12. If you want these characters while playing Black Eagles, the route split in Chapter 11 is the decisive choice.
Timeskip recruitment and re-recruitment
Part I recruitment is safest. Characters recruited before the timeskip can have different post-timeskip outcomes depending on the route and story event. RPG Site reports that some pre-timeskip recruits may appear in the enemy army and need to be defeated before they can rejoin, specifically naming Ashe and Lorenz.
Ashe’s documented condition
Serenes Forest gives Ashe’s specific rule: he leaves at Part 2 unless Edelgard or Dimitri is present, then can be recruited again by defeating him in Chapter 15. If Ashe matters to your roster, recruit him in Part I and keep the relevant leader in your army; otherwise plan for the Chapter 15 battle rather than assuming his earlier recruitment persists.
What to do when a former recruit is an enemy
- Confirm that the character was recruited before the timeskip and that the current route allows a return.
- During the battle where the character appears, defeat that character with a unit who can safely finish the engagement.
- After the battle, check the monastery and roster for the renewed recruitment conversation.
- If no conversation appears, verify the chapter and route condition instead of spending activity points on normal support requirements; a post-timeskip return is a story condition, not an ordinary student check.
The published guidance identifies Ashe and Lorenz as examples rather than an exhaustive list. Treat any other former student who appears in an opposing army as potentially conditional and verify the route-specific result in your current save.
Ashen Wolves and other DLC recruitment
The Ashen Wolves are recruited through the Cindered Shadows side story. Triangle Attack lists these Abyss unlock points:

Nintendo’s official support documentation states: “They can only be recruited during Part I.” The Cindered Shadows progression therefore unlocks the Abyss characters, but you still need to complete their recruitment while the pre-timeskip window is open. Do not leave the monastery’s Part I recruitment to the final chapter.
Anna
With the Expansion Pass, Anna becomes recruitable in the monastery after Chapter 3. She has no Support relationships, so support-based reductions and automatic B-support requests do not apply to her. Recruiting Anna also unlocks a later paralogue. Because she is DLC-dependent and follows a separate rule set, check that the Expansion Pass is active before looking for her recruitment option.

A practical recruitment schedule
Use the following sequence on a first playthrough when you want a broad roster without relying on luck:
- Chapter 2: make a target list. Mark the students, faculty, and DLC characters you actually want. Remove route-locked leaders and retainers from plans that cannot include them.
- Early Part I: recruit low-burden students first. Check students whose skill and stat requirements are already close. This frees later activity points for high targets such as Felix’s Sword B+ or Hilda’s Charm 30.
- Every free exploration week: build support deliberately. Invite targets to meals, give appropriate gifts, return lost items, use choir practice, request mission assistance, and choose favorable advice answers. Spread activities across characters whose support can reduce a difficult check.
- Before accepting a recruitment offer, check the real stat. Open Byleth’s status and exclude class and ability bonuses when comparing the stat to the requirement.
- Use instruction for the bottleneck skill. If the stat is already covered, focus instruction on the weapon or skill rank. If the skill is covered but the stat is not, use support and normal growth rather than wasting instruction on a rank that no longer matters.
- Try again after a failed weekend. A failed or declined student offer returns the next weekend, so use the intervening week for support or instruction.
- Check faculty as soon as their chapters open. Confirm Byleth’s level and support, remembering that support can lower the level threshold but cannot erase the chapter gate.
- Finish Part I-only recruits before the timeskip. This includes Ashen Wolves and any student whose route outcome you cannot safely recover later.
- Resolve the Chapter 11 route decision with your roster in mind. Crimson Flower causes Flayn to leave, while Silver Snow enables the special Catherine, Cyril, and Shamir outcomes described above.
- After the timeskip, inspect enemy armies. If a former recruit such as Ashe or Lorenz appears against you, follow the route-specific defeat and re-recruitment condition instead of treating the character as permanently lost.
Can you recruit everyone on one route?
No. The three house leaders and their retainers are route-locked: Edelgard and Hubert belong to Black Eagles, Dimitri and Dedue to Blue Lions, and Claude to Golden Deer. Hilda adds a narrower route exception because Black Eagles can recruit her only on Silver Snow in Chapter 12.
You can still create a very large cross-house roster by recruiting eligible students during Part I, adding faculty when their chapter and level gates open, and using the Ashen Wolves DLC window. The practical limit is not one universal stat requirement; it is the combination of route locks, support time, chapter timing, DLC ownership, and the timeskip rules. A completion plan should therefore compare each target on six axes:
- Is the character route-locked?
- What is the earliest chapter, and must recruitment happen in Part I?
- Which Byleth skill and underlying stat are checked?
- Can support reduce the requirement or trigger a chance-based B request?
- Could the character leave or require re-recruitment after the timeskip?
- Does recruitment require the Expansion Pass or Cindered Shadows?
Troubleshooting a failed recruitment
The displayed stat is high enough, but the game refuses
Check Byleth’s base stat rather than the current class total. Class growths, temporary bonuses, and abilities do not count for the requirement. Also confirm that the skill rank shown is the specific skill requested, not a related weapon rank.
The student’s support looks high, but the requirement did not change
The visible support letter can lag behind hidden support points. Continue meals, gifts, lost-item returns, choir, mission assistance, and advice answers until the next support conversation becomes available. A B-support automatic request is random, so a missed weekday request is not proof that the character is unavailable.
The recruitment option disappeared
A failed or declined student offer is normally locked only for that weekend and returns the next weekend. If it does not return, check whether the chapter has advanced into a route or timeskip condition, whether the character is route-locked, or whether a DLC requirement is missing.

A former recruit is fighting against you
Do not assume the roster is permanently lost. Ashe has a documented Chapter 15 defeat-and-recruit condition when Edelgard or Dimitri is present, and RPG Site identifies Ashe and Lorenz as examples of characters who may require this kind of post-timeskip return. Follow the current route’s battle and conversation conditions.
Missables checklist
- Scout desired cross-house students from Chapter 2 onward instead of waiting for a random B-support offer.
- Build support early for high requirements; support lowers both skill and stat burdens.
- Do not count class or ability stat bonuses toward recruitment.
- Remember that Caspar and Ferdinand cannot use the pre-Part II automatic B-support request in a normal first run.
- Recruit Ashen Wolves during Part I after their listed Cindered Shadows chapters.
- Recruit Anna after Chapter 3 only if the Expansion Pass is active; she has no Support relationships.
- On Black Eagles, decide whether to choose Crimson Flower or Silver Snow with Flayn, Catherine, Cyril, Shamir, and Hilda in mind.
- Before the timeskip, secure characters who cannot be recovered on your route; after it, watch for enemy versions of former recruits.
- For Ashe, keep Edelgard or Dimitri present if you intend to defeat and recruit him in Chapter 15.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an A support guarantee recruitment even if Byleth has the wrong skill and stat?
Yes. Triangle Attack’s documented rule says an A support allows student recruitment regardless of the normal skill or stat requirement.
If I decline a student, have I lost that character forever?
Normally no. Serenes Forest reports that a failed or declined offer is locked for the current weekend and returns the following weekend, unless a separate route or timeskip rule has changed the character’s availability.
Can I recruit Ashen Wolves after the timeskip?
No. Nintendo’s official support documentation states that the Ashen Wolves can only be recruited during Part I. Their Abyss unlocks occur after Cindered Shadows Chapters 3 through 6, depending on the character.
Why can’t Caspar or Ferdinand make the automatic B-support request before the timeskip?
Their B supports are unavailable in a normal first run during Part I, so the chance-based weekday request cannot be used for them before Part 2.
Does Anna use the same support system as other students?
No. With the Expansion Pass, Anna becomes recruitable after Chapter 3, has no Support relationships, and unlocks a later paralogue.
