Buy the $69.99 base game first if you are new, undecided, or want to finish the core campaign before spending more. The $34.99 Expansion Pass is an add-on, not a standalone game. Buy it with confidence if you already own the game and know you want every announced wave. The $104.99 bundle includes both, but at Nintendo’s listed US prices it costs one cent more than buying the two products separately before tax.
The short answer
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave launches on Nintendo Switch 2 as a $69.99 game. Its base edition is the required foundation for the story and battles. The Expansion Pass costs $34.99 and adds three planned waves of downloadable content; it cannot be played by itself, and Nintendo does not sell the waves separately.

That makes the buying decision straightforward:
- New or uncertain: buy the base game. You receive the launch experience and can decide later whether the add-on content is for you.
- Already own the game: buy the Expansion Pass if you want all three announced waves, including future story content, allies and classes.
- Absolutely certain before starting: the $104.99 game-plus-pass bundle is convenient, but it is not a meaningful discount against the $69.99 game plus the $34.99 pass.
- Prefer physical media: choose the physical base-game edition and add the pass digitally only if you want its content.
What the base game contains
Nintendo lists Fortune’s Weave as a Nintendo Switch 2 title developed by Intelligent Systems. The physical edition and the digital game are the launch purchase; the base game is scheduled for September 17, 2026. Its central premise sends four heroes through interwoven journeys spanning past and present. You travel through time, gather allies and fight the demon god Balor while making tactical decisions in battle.
The base purchase is therefore the complete starting point for the game’s main experience. You do not need the Expansion Pass to access the launch game, its foundational combat system or the campaign built around the four heroes. The pass adds optional content after that foundation rather than replacing it.
#1 Best Overall
- Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros from its headquarters at Garreg Mach Monastery, home to the Officers Academy, where you’re invited to teach one of its three mighty houses: The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer.
- Which house will you choose?
- As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.
The core premise
Nintendo describes the objective as travelling through time to gather allies and defeat Balor. The four protagonists’ stories are connected across different points in history, and the campaign asks you to guide them toward saving the future—or failing to do so. That structure is important when deciding whether to wait: the base game is not a demo or a partial chapter held behind the pass.
Physical and digital availability
Nintendo lists a physical base-game edition for Switch 2. The Expansion Pass is digital DLC for Switch 2 and still requires the game. A physical cartridge does not turn the pass into a boxed product, and purchasing the pass alone does not provide a copy of Fortune’s Weave.
What the Expansion Pass adds
The pass grants access to all three announced waves as they release. Nintendo’s plan is staggered: Wave 1 is available now in the United States, while Wave 2 is planned for holiday/winter 2026 and Wave 3 for 2027. The pass is one purchase for the entire announced package; individual waves cannot be bought separately.
| Wave | Announced content | Availability | What is known |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wave 1 | Prototype weapons for the four heroes, modelled after Heroes’ Relics from Fire Emblem: Three Houses | Available now in the US | Nintendo Support lists October 14, 2026 as the US release date. |
| Wave 2 | The gods Aurora, Smyrnos and Jurah, plus new wearable outfits | Holiday/winter 2026 | No exact release date has been announced in the available Nintendo information. |
| Wave 3 | New stories featuring Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel and Anatolia; new recruitable allies and classes | 2027 | No exact release date or complete mechanical specification has been announced. |
Wave 1: prototype weapons
The first wave focuses on weapons for the four heroes. Nintendo describes them as prototypes modelled after Heroes’ Relics from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. If you want to experiment with those weapons as soon as possible, the pass has an immediate component rather than being only a promise of future content.
Wave 2: gods and outfits
Wave 2 is scheduled for the holiday/winter 2026 period. It introduces Aurora, Smyrnos and Jurah, along with new wearable outfits. The announcement identifies the characters and cosmetic additions but does not provide a precise launch day, detailed stat effects or a full description of how the gods fit into the campaign. Treat the window as a schedule range, not a guaranteed date.

- Command Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters like Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude in epic real-time battles
- Play through three distinct storylines set in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses universe, each with a different ending, from the point of view of a new protagonist, Shez.
- Combine the action-packed Warriors-style gameplay with the strategy and style of the Fire Emblem series
- Fight through hordes of enemies with Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters and their distinct abilities
- Use Fire Emblem series mechanics like the weapons triangle, character classes, crests, and battalions to tailor your strategy
Wave 3: stories, allies and classes
The final announced wave is planned for 2027. It adds stories featuring Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel and Anatolia, plus new recruitable allies and classes. This is the wave with the clearest indication of additional narrative and roster depth, but Nintendo has not supplied an exact date or a complete breakdown of each class and character’s abilities.
Base game versus pass at a glance
| Question | Base game | Expansion Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Can it be played on its own? | Yes. It is the required game purchase. | No. It requires the base game. |
| Launch content | The campaign and systems available from the game’s launch. | Not applicable; its content releases in waves. |
| Additional content | None of the announced pass waves. | All three announced waves: weapons, gods/outfits, and later stories, allies and classes. |
| US regular price listed by Nintendo | $69.99 | $34.99 |
| Purchase format | Physical edition listed, as well as the game purchase. | Digital Switch 2 DLC. |
| Release timing | September 17, 2026 | Wave 1: October 14, 2026 in the US; Wave 2: holiday/winter 2026; Wave 3: 2027. |
Price math: bundle or separate purchases?
Nintendo’s listed US regular prices are $69.99 for the game, $34.99 for the pass and $104.99 for the bundle.

| Purchase | Listed US price before tax | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | $69.99 | The required Switch 2 game. |
| Expansion Pass | $34.99 | All three announced DLC waves; the base game is required. |
| Game-plus-pass bundle | $104.99 | The base game and Expansion Pass together. |
Buying the two products separately totals $104.98 before tax ($69.99 + $34.99). The $104.99 bundle is therefore effectively the same price, but technically one cent higher at the listed US rates. Its advantage is convenience rather than a material saving. Prices and eShop availability can vary by region and can change, so check the store serving your account before checkout.
Who should buy only the base game?
You are new to Fortune’s Weave
The base game is the sensible entry point because it is the only required purchase. It lets you learn the time-travel story, tactical battles and four-hero structure without paying for content that may not affect your decision to continue. Once you know that the core campaign suits you, the pass remains available as a separate purchase.
You are unsure about future DLC
The later waves are not all available yet. Wave 2 has a holiday/winter 2026 window and Wave 3 is planned for 2027, so an undecided buyer would be paying today for content that will arrive over time. Starting with the base game avoids committing before Nintendo has published the remaining waves’ exact dates and full details.

- The Officers Academy is home to three houses: The Black Eagles with house leader Edelgard, The Blue Lions with house leader Dimitri, and The Golden Deer with house leader Claude
- As a professor, lead students in their academic lives and on the battlefield
- A turn-based, tactical RPG that puts new twists on strategic battling
- Freely roam Garreg Mach Monastery and interact with students in a variety of ways to bond with them. In the classroom, tutor your students to help them
- Grow in the skill sets required to become specific classes
You want a physical collection
The physical option applies to the base game. Because the pass is digital DLC, buying a cartridge does not eliminate the need for a digital purchase if you later want the weapons, gods, outfits, stories, allies and classes.
You primarily want the launch campaign
If your goal is to play the four heroes’ initial interwoven journey and decide whether the campaign is worth extending, the base edition covers that purpose. The pass is optional expansion content, not a key to unlock the launch story.
Who should buy the Expansion Pass?
You already own the base game
For an existing owner who wants every announced addition, the $34.99 pass is the direct purchase. It covers Wave 1 immediately and automatically includes Waves 2 and 3 as they release, so you do not have to make three separate buying decisions.
You specifically want the future stories and roster additions
Wave 3 is planned to add stories centred on Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel and Anatolia, together with recruitable allies and classes. Those additions are the strongest reason for a player who values campaign extensions and team-building options to commit to the pass now.
You want all announced content rather than selected pieces
There is no à-la-carte route. Nintendo says the three waves cannot be purchased separately. If you want Wave 3’s stories or new classes, you must buy the pass package rather than waiting to purchase only that wave.

You are comfortable with a staggered schedule
The pass is a commitment to a release plan. Wave 1 is already available in the US, but the remaining content arrives later. Buy it when you are comfortable receiving the package over that timetable rather than expecting every item on day one.
When does the bundle make sense?
The bundle is most useful for a buyer who has not purchased anything and already knows they want the base game plus all announced DLC. It places both products in one transaction. At Nintendo’s listed US prices, however, it is not a discount: $104.99 is one cent more than the $104.98 separate total before tax.
An existing owner should not buy the bundle to obtain the pass; the $34.99 pass is the relevant add-on. Conversely, a physical-media buyer can purchase the physical base game and then add the digital pass, but should not assume that a cartridge bundle contains a physical copy of the DLC.

If you are buying around launch
The base game’s listed release date is September 17, 2026. Wave 1 follows on October 14, 2026 in the United States, so a launch-day buyer does not need to wait for the first add-on to become available. You can start with the campaign and add the pass later.

If you are buying after Wave 1
As of the US date listed by Nintendo Support, Wave 1 is available. The pass still includes it, along with the two later waves. Buying the base game first remains a valid route if you want to assess the campaign before purchasing.

If you are planning around Wave 2
Nintendo gives Wave 2 a holiday/winter 2026 window, not a day-and-date commitment in the published information used here. Avoid treating a seasonal window as an exact launch date when planning time off, gifts or a playthrough.
If you are planning around Wave 3
Wave 3 is scheduled for 2027. Its story and roster additions may be the deciding factor for long-term players, but the announcement does not establish the month, day or final feature list. Buy the pass for the announced package, not for unannounced specifics.
Regional date and price cautions
The October 14, 2026 Wave 1 date is the US date recorded by Nintendo Support. A Nintendo Malaysia news page describes a regional launch on October 15, 2026, illustrating why dates should be checked against the country attached to your Nintendo account and store. The one-day difference does not change the content, but it can change when the download becomes available locally.
The prices in this comparison are US regular prices supplied by Nintendo for 2026. Taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing and future eShop changes can alter the amount shown at checkout. A promotion or regional bundle should not be assumed from the US listing.
What the pass does not promise
- It does not include the base game. You must own or purchase Fortune’s Weave.
- It does not provide a physical DLC cartridge; Nintendo lists it as digital Switch 2 DLC.
- It does not let you select only one wave. The waves are sold together.
- It does not establish exact launch days for Wave 2 or Wave 3.
- It does not, in the published description, specify every weapon statistic, outfit effect, class ability or story length.
These limits matter when comparing the price with your expectations. The announced content is clear at a category level, while detailed specifications and final timing for the later waves remain to be confirmed.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you own the base game? If no, start with the $69.99 game or the game-plus-pass bundle. If yes, consider the $34.99 pass.
- Do you want all three waves? If no or unsure, buy only the base game for now. If yes, the pass is the only way to obtain the complete announced set.
- Do you need physical media? Buy the physical base edition. Plan for a separate digital pass if you later choose the DLC.
- Are you buying in the United States? Use the listed $69.99, $34.99 and $104.99 figures as the pre-tax reference. For another region, verify the local store price and release date.
- Are you comfortable waiting for later content? Wave 2 is scheduled for holiday/winter 2026 and Wave 3 for 2027. If staggered delivery is not appealing, postpone the pass decision.
Bottom line for each type of buyer
| Your situation | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First-time player | Base game | It is the complete required starting point and lets you judge the campaign before adding DLC. |
| Undecided player | Base game now; pass later if desired | The remaining waves are scheduled over 2026 and 2027, so there is no need to commit immediately. |
| Current owner seeking all DLC | Expansion Pass | It includes Wave 1 and automatically covers Waves 2 and 3. |
| Buyer certain about everything | Bundle or separate purchases | Both provide the game and pass; the listed US totals are effectively identical. |
| Physical collector | Physical base game plus optional digital pass | The base game has a physical edition; the pass is digital. |
For most readers, the base game is the safer first purchase. Choose the Expansion Pass immediately only when you already know you want the complete announced DLC package and accept its staggered release schedule.
