To retrieve old messages on a Samsung Galaxy, first check which messaging app you used. In Samsung Messages, deleted texts may remain in Trash for up to 30 days if Trash was enabled. In Google Messages, check Archived for conversations that were hidden rather than deleted; Samsung says deleted messages in that app are permanently deleted. If the message is not there, recovery depends on a Samsung Cloud, Google account, or Smart Switch backup made before it was lost.
Start by identifying the messaging app
Open the app where the conversation was sent or received. Samsung Messages and Google Messages handle missing conversations differently, so a recovery route that applies to one may not apply to the other.

- Samsung Messages: Check Trash for deleted messages.
- Google Messages: Check Archived for conversations removed from the main list. Deletion is different from archiving.
If you are unsure which app you used, check the app icon or open the messaging app you normally use. Menu labels can vary with app and One UI versions, so follow the current on-screen prompts if they differ from the paths below.

Samsung Electronics America says deleted messages in Samsung Messages can be recovered from Trash within 30 days. That is Samsung’s stated retention window for this app, not a guarantee that every deleted message is still available. Trash can be disabled in the app settings, so the option may not appear or may not contain the conversation you need. Samsung Messages recovery instructions

- Open Samsung Messages.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then tap Trash.
- Touch and hold the message you want to recover.
- Tap Restore.
If Trash is empty, unavailable, or the message was deleted more than 30 days ago, move on to checking existing backups.
How to find an archived conversation in Google Messages
An archived conversation is hidden from the main conversation list; it has not been deleted. Samsung’s recovery guide says messages deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered through that app. Samsung’s guide to recovering deleted messages

- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile icon, then tap Archived.
- Touch and hold the conversation and tap the Unarchive icon.
If you do not find the conversation in Archived, check whether a backup made before the deletion could contain it.
Restore messages from a backup that predates the loss
A backup helps only if it includes the messages and was made before they disappeared. The documented restore methods differ, and they may restore more than messages or require access to another device. Check what is backed up and understand the effect on the receiving phone before proceeding.

Samsung Cloud
Samsung documents restoring backed-up messages through Settings > Accounts and backup > Restore data. Select the relevant device, choose Messages, tap Restore, and follow the prompts. Samsung Cloud support varies by country and carrier, and Samsung notes that some large files may not be backed up. Samsung Cloud restore instructions
This restores messages present in the backup; it does not independently retrieve messages that were never backed up. Check the selected device and backup contents shown on your phone before restoring.

Google account backup
Samsung’s US guidance describes restoring Google-backed data while setting up a new phone or after a factory reset. It says the receiving phone must run the same or a higher Android version than the version associated with the backup. Samsung does not describe this as a way to browse a Google Drive backup as a message archive. Samsung’s Google backup recovery guidance
A factory reset can erase current local data. Do not reset solely to try this route without first checking the backup and safeguarding current data you want to keep.

Smart Switch from an old phone or prior backup
Smart Switch can transfer data from an old phone or restore a backup previously made to a PC, Mac, or external storage. Follow the app prompts, select Messages when that option is available, and complete the transfer to the receiving Galaxy. Permissions may be required. Device and operating-system compatibility can limit transfers, and third-party messenger data may not transfer. For an existing external-storage backup, Samsung documents restoring from an SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD. USB storage connects to the phone’s charging port; an OTG adapter may be needed. Samsung Canada notes that some phones lack SD card slots and may require a compatible cable and SD card adapter. Start with Trash or Archive because those checks do not require a device reset. Before restoring any backup, check its date and contents and consider what current data on the Galaxy might be changed or erased by the restore process.
