Open Find My on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac signed in to the Apple Account associated with the missing item. Select it under Devices to see its current or last-known location, play a sound if it is available, and use the recovery options offered for that device. Find My generally must have been enabled before the item went missing.

Check the map and the status shown for the item. If it has a current location, use the map or directions to go to it. If it is offline or cannot be located, enable Notify When Found if that option appears.

A map pin is not necessarily live tracking. Find My may show the last location the item reported. Apple says a last-known location may be available for up to seven days after the device or item last sent a location through the Find My network; after that, the app may show No location found. Apple’s guidance on using Find My for a lost Apple device explains this limit.
Make a nearby device play a sound
Apple Watch
In Find My, select the Watch and choose Play Sound when available. If the Watch is online, it plays a sound for about two minutes. If it is offline, the app may show Sound Pending; Apple says the sound plays the next time the Watch connects to Wi-Fi or a cellular network. You can also locate devices from an Apple Watch using the Find Devices app. Apple’s Find misplaced devices with Apple Watch guide describes these options.

AirPods
Select the AirPods in Find My and choose Play Sound if the option is available. For supported models, if the earbuds are separated, you can select the left or right AirPod to help locate one at a time. A sound command may not work while the AirPods are offline, out of range, or without charge; use the map and the status in the app rather than assuming the sound has reached them. Use Find Nearby if your AirPods support it
Find Nearby is not available for every AirPods generation. Apple’s feature table, published April 27, 2026, lists it for AirPods 3, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, all AirPods Pro models, and AirPods Max. If the option appears for your AirPods, follow its on-screen directions to get closer. Availability can vary by country or region. Check Apple’s current Find My feature table for your exact model.

That same table distinguishes the basic options from the broader set: it lists View Location and Play Sound for AirPods 1, AirPods 2, and AirPods 4, while the supported models listed above also have options including Find Nearby, Show Contact Info, Notify When Found, Notify When Left Behind, and Find My Lock. Do not assume an option is available just because it appears for another generation; check the model-specific row and the options shown in your Find My app.
What to do when Find My says the item is offline
Offline does not necessarily mean the item is permanently lost. It may be out of range, need charging, or simply be unable to send a current location. Find My may show the last-known location, Offline, or No location found. While it remains unavailable, sound and nearby-finding commands may not work.

Turn on Notify When Found if offered, then check Find My again when you receive a notification.

Use the displayed last-known location as a lead, not a guarantee that the item is still there.

If you later get close to an online device, try Play Sound; for a compatible AirPods model, use Find Nearby if it appears.
Mark the device as lost or show contact details
Apple Watch
Use the Watch’s available Lost Mode option in Find My. Apple Watch Lost Mode can display contact details, update the Watch’s location, and disable Apple Pay cards and passes on the device. Follow the prompts in Find My, and provide contact information you are comfortable displaying to someone who finds it. Apple’s Apple Watch guide covers Lost Mode.
AirPods
For compatible models, Find My may offer Lost Mode or Show Contact Info. AirPods Lost Mode depends on the model, and Find My network setup must have been in place before the loss. If neither option appears, that AirPods model or its setup may not support it. Use Apple’s AirPods instructions and the model feature table to check availability.
