Square Enix says the change took effect after maintenance in late September 2026. The trial is still a limited slice of the game: available jobs stop at level 75, access is restricted to original-release areas, and several social and trading features are disabled.
Does the FFXI free trial have a time limit?
No. Square Enix’s North American free-trial listing says the trial is available with no time limit, following maintenance in late September 2026. The Square Enix Support Center FAQ also confirms that trial play can continue indefinitely.

Jobs and progression
Available jobs can reach level 75. Jobs introduced in expansion packs are not available to trial players, so the trial does not expose every job or the full progression available in the game.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore the Mamool Ja Savagelands, a land hostile to the Near Eastern Aht Urhgan Empire
- Face powerful new monsters like the Mamool Ja, a powerful tribe of beastmen
- New jobs including the highly requested Blue Mage and Corsair expand battle strategies
- Learn about key NPCs, new monsters, and new areas in Vana'diel's Near East
- Use a new type of battle called Assault
Areas and story
Trial access is limited to areas from the original FINAL FANTASY XI release. Expansion packs and additional downloadable content are excluded. Square Enix specifically notes that the Rhapsodies of Vana’diel and The Voracious Resurgence missions cannot be completed on the trial.
Solo play with Trust allies
Playing alone is supported. Square Enix’s Returning Adventurer Guide, Vol. 1 explains that Trust magic summons NPC allies who fight alongside you, letting you play as if you were in a full party. The guide also says many older missions and features were adjusted to support solo progress, while advising players to prepare for later missions. Trusts make soloing more practical; they are not a promise that every objective will be effortless.

What restrictions remain?
Square Enix’s store listing and support FAQ describe these limits for trial accounts:
- Characters: You can have up to three characters at a time.
- Gil: A character can hold no more than 100,000 gil.
- Auctions: You cannot view, place, or bid on auction listings.
- Trading and bazaars: Trading is disabled, and you cannot buy from or sell through bazaars.
- Parties: You cannot invite another player to a party, but you may join a party when someone invites you.
- Chat: /tell, /shout, and /yell are restricted. Party chat and replies to incoming tells are allowed.
- Other account features: Trial characters cannot use the Mog House Delivery Box or World Transfer Service, become Mentors, or participate in Unity Concord.
These limits matter most if you want to trade, coordinate broadly with other players, or use systems that depend on expanded account access. The official store listing and support FAQ are the places to check for the current full restriction list.

The change means there is no longer a countdown forcing you to finish the trial within a set period. It does not make all of FINAL FANTASY XI free, add expansions to the trial, or remove its account restrictions. Square Enix describes the offer as a free trial “available with no time limit” on its official North American store page.
