Yes, FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION has a physical Nintendo Switch 2 release—but it is a Game-Key Card, not a cartridge containing the game. Square Enix says buyers need an internet connection and at least 130 GB of available storage to download it. Nintendo currently estimates the file at 130.1 GB, and warns that figure may change before release. Nintendo’s US listing and Square Enix’s product page make the tension clear: the physical card is required to play, but it does not spare the buyer the large download or the storage it occupies.
What the Game-Key Card means for this release
Square Enix identifies the Switch 2 physical edition as a Game-Key Card. Nintendo explains that the card does not contain the game data: insert it, download the software to the console or a supported microSD Express card, and keep the card inserted when playing. In other words, this is a physical product, but not a physical copy in the traditional sense of the game being stored on the card. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card guide describes the format.

Nintendo says an internet connection is needed to download Game-Key Card software and for the game’s first launch. After that first launch, the game can be started offline, but the card must still be inserted. Nintendo also says an account is not required to download the data.
How much storage does FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION need?
Square Enix specifies at least 130 GB of available storage for this title’s Switch 2 download. Nintendo’s US product listing currently estimates the file size at 130.1 GB; that is a pre-release estimate, not a confirmed final install measurement. The publisher’s 130 GB requirement is the practical figure to plan around, while the estimate signals that the download is exceptionally large. Square Enix’s listing also states the internet and storage requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo lists Switch 2 with 256 GB of total internal storage, but some of that capacity is reserved for system use, so the console does not offer 256 GB of free space for games. A single download requiring at least 130 GB can therefore consume a substantial share of usable capacity, especially alongside other games, updates, downloadable content, and captures. Nintendo’s support FAQ explains the storage allocation and supported expansion options: microSD Express card support for Nintendo Switch 2.
A microSD Express card can hold downloaded software and other supported data, so it is one way to make room. Neither Nintendo nor Square Enix says an expansion card is mandatory for this game; the requirement is 130 GB available, whether that space is on the console or supported expansion storage. Nintendo’s FAQ currently says no individual game requires additional storage to play.

How large is it compared with another Switch 2 Final Fantasy game?
Nintendo currently lists FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH at 91.5 GB for Switch 2. That is 38.6 GB less than REVELATION’s estimated 130.1 GB listing. These are current listing figures, and REVELATION’s remains an estimate; the comparison gives a sense of scale, not an explanation for why one game is larger. Nintendo’s REBIRTH listing provides the comparison.
What buyers get—and what they do not
- A physical card: The Game-Key Card is a tangible item that must be inserted to play the installed game.
- The game data: It is downloaded separately rather than read from the card, so the card does not avoid the download or the need to store the game.
- Optional physical extras: Square Enix lists a Deluxe Edition with a soundtrack, artbook, and SteelBook case, and a limited Collector’s Edition that adds a Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth statue. These collectibles do not change the Game-Key Card or storage requirement. Edition availability may vary by region. Square Enix’s store page lists the editions.
The format’s appeal and drawback are different: buyers still receive and need a physical card, but they cannot treat it like a self-contained game cartridge or lend it without also accounting for the installed data. That distinction matters most when a player expects a boxed purchase to save console storage or work without a substantial download.

Why the format draws criticism
The issue is not that a physical Switch 2 release does not exist. It does. The problem for some buyers is that the card preserves the physical token while shifting the full game download and storage burden to the console owner. At an estimated 130.1 GB, REVELATION makes that trade-off unusually visible.
In a GamesRadar+ interview published October 26, 2025, FINAL FANTASY VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi acknowledged that he understood why some people dislike the format, describing it as part of a broader trend while also recognizing that Switch 2 fans value physical media and that change may be slower on that platform. His comments are industry perspective, not Nintendo policy or a measurement of how many customers object. GamesRadar+’s report on Hamaguchi’s remarks provides the context.
