Kotaku and Strafecast both reported the casting on October 8, 2026. As of this writing, we could not locate an official Square Enix announcement or a public panel recording to confirm the details, so the casting, character description, and release date below are attributed to those reports.
What the reports say
Two secondary reports cover the announcement. Ash Parrish’s Kotaku piece, published October 8, 2026 under the headline “Another Critical Role Actor Joins The Final Fantasy VII Revelation Cast As Shiva (But Not The Shiva You Think),” says Ray was announced during the New York Comic Con panel and describes the character as a stylized, digitized take on the summon. Kotaku compares the look to the minigame characters seen in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Strafecast’s October 8, 2026 report, titled “Final Fantasy VII Revelation Announces an NPC-ified Version of Shiva Voiced by Marisha Ray | NYCC 2026,” describes the same reveal and adds the clip and quoted reactions covered below.

Who is Polydroid Shiva?
Based on both reports, Polydroid Shiva is a digital version of the Shiva summon who appears as a non-player character rather than as a summon. The name and look are the reported details; the reports do not establish a full backstory or a complete list of the character’s functions in the game.

The role is the least certain part of the reporting. Kotaku suggests the character is connected to a Gold Saucer snowboarding minigame, but it presents that as an interpretation drawn from the clip, not as a confirmed game feature. Treat the snowboarding link as a reasonable reading of what was shown, not as a stated design detail.

The Vincent Valentine clip
Both reports say Square Enix showed a behind-the-scenes clip in which Polydroid Shiva speaks with Vincent Valentine. Strafecast describes Shiva addressing Vincent and urging him to try the slopes. Those lines are the reporter’s description of the clip, and the exact dialogue has not been confirmed against an official recording.
Vincent Valentine is voiced by Matt Mercer, who is married to Ray. That relationship is the main angle of both articles.
Matt Mercer’s reaction
Strafecast quotes Mercer reacting to the chance to act opposite Ray: “It was amazing, are you kidding me!” According to the same report, he joked that he hoped the casting was not a “nepotism scenario,” then said the team had not known Ray was his wife. These remarks are reported as Strafecast recorded them. Check the panel recording before treating the wording as a verified transcript.

The reported release date
Strafecast reports that Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for April 8, 2027. That date comes from secondary coverage and has not been confirmed by an official Square Enix release announcement. If you are planning around it, wait for the publisher’s own channels.
Cast recording hours
Strafecast also quotes Cloud voice actor Cody Christian estimating “800 hours collectively” spent in the booth on the project. This is one performer’s anecdotal estimate, not a measured production figure, and it does not describe the game overall.
What is and is not established
- Reported: Marisha Ray voices Polydroid Shiva in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, announced at NYCC 2026 (Kotaku and Strafecast, October 8, 2026).
- Reported: A clip shows Polydroid Shiva speaking with Vincent Valentine, voiced by Matt Mercer.
- Reported, but inferred: The character is linked to a Gold Saucer snowboarding minigame.
- Reported, not yet confirmed: An April 8, 2027 release date.
- Not established: Polydroid Shiva’s full story role, merchandise, a playable snowboarding minigame, or any official Square Enix statement.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a visual reference only
Kotaku invokes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when describing how Shiva looks, comparing her to that game’s minigame characters. That is a visual comparison. It does not mean Rebirth and Revelation are the same game, and it does not establish any connection between Shiva and Rebirth’s content beyond the look the reporter describes.
No Polydroid Shiva merchandise, collectible, or physical release was identified in the coverage.

Keep the distinction clear: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the already released game referenced for comparison, while Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the title tied to this announcement.
For now, the casting is the solid news and the rest is reported detail awaiting official confirmation.
