Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says the trilogy’s final game will deliver an “extravagant, all-out” showdown with Sephiroth. Whether another studio will remake a famous older game as a multipart series is less certain: Hamaguchi says he cannot predict that, though he believes the project may offer useful lessons as a case study.
What Hamaguchi promises about the final Sephiroth fight
In an interview with PC Gamer published October 2, 2026, game director Naoki Hamaguchi said fans would be angry if the game did not include a dramatic final showdown with Sephiroth. He described it this way: “What I can say is that it’s going to be a very extravagant, all-out battle that will far and above surpass what was in Remake and Rebirth in what I believe will be a very satisfying encounter.”

That is Hamaguchi’s description of an unreleased game, not an independently verified account of how the finished battle plays. He also acknowledged interest in seeing Cloud use his Omnislash at the end of the fight: “I know there are a lot of people out there who are looking forward to seeing the ultimate limit break [Omnislash] at the end of the battle with Sephiroth.” He said Revelation includes homages to the original game.
Will another developer make a multipart remake like this?
Hamaguchi would not predict whether another studio will take a famous older game and remake it as a multipart series. “So I can’t say whether in the future anyone else will decide that they’re going to take a famous old game and remake it as a multi-part series, but regardless, I do think that this has left quite a lot of interesting knowledge as a case study,” he told PC Gamer.

That is neither a forecast that the approach will catch on nor a claim that it cannot be repeated. Hamaguchi’s point is that the project may give other developers something to learn from, even if its scale and structure are unusual. PC Gamer reports that he estimated the team had worked together for “10-12 years”—his account of this group’s continuity, not an industry-wide production benchmark.
Why the trilogy’s long-term team and early ending plan matter
Team continuity is one part of Hamaguchi’s explanation of the undertaking. In a separate June 11, 2026 interview with Video Games Chronicle, he said the direction of the conclusion was in place from the early days of development, and that producer Yoshinori Kitase also had a vision for the ending. Those comments suggest the final chapter was not simply being improvised after the preceding games, though they do not establish how another studio could reproduce the same process.

Hamaguchi also argued that mechanically steering a game toward the median of positive and negative fan feedback risks making it feel characterless. That is his view of creative decision-making, not a universal rule for sequels or remakes. The sources offer no common budgets, profitability figures, or production-efficiency measures that would support a numerical comparison with other projects.

PlayStation’s September 17, 2026 hands-on report describes Revelation as the final chapter after Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It lists the game for PS5 with an April 8, 2027 release date; that is the date announced in the report and may change.
Rank #3
PC Gamer says Revelation covers roughly the final third of the original Final Fantasy VII story, with Meteor, Sephiroth and the Weapons as central context. Hamaguchi also said the new game has more playable sections with Zack, and that they are more extensive than those in Rebirth. PlayStation’s demo report describes a Whirlwind Maze segment with Vincent and Cid playable, the FITS combat system, and a battle against Jenova Deathmourner. Those details establish pre-release setting and feature context, but they do not reveal or verify the final Sephiroth encounter.
