Final Fantasy VII Rebirth offers newcomers a standalone experience, according to Square Enix, but it is also the second entry in a three-game remake project. If you want the story and character introductions in order, start with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade instead.
What kind of game is Rebirth?
Rebirth expands the setting beyond Midgar into open zones filled with exploration, side quests, combat challenges, and minigames, including the Queen’s Blood card game. Its appeal is partly that variety: there is more to do than follow the main story, and optional activities can create room for party interactions.

That abundance is also the main trade-off. GameSpot’s 2024 review praised the refined combat and party synergy while criticizing pacing and some open-zone activities (GameSpot, February 22, 2024). The Guardian likewise highlighted compelling combat and character moments, but warned that minigames and side quests can interrupt the story’s momentum (The Guardian, February 22, 2024).

Does Rebirth make sense if you have never played Final Fantasy VII?
Square Enix describes Rebirth as “a standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers alike” (Square Enix’s Rebirth page and FAQ). The publisher also identifies it as the second game in a three-title remake project. “Standalone” means you can approach Rebirth without having played the preceding game; it does not mean that it is the project’s first chapter or a complete retelling of the story.
Square Enix says playing Remake first is not required for basic understanding of Rebirth. Still, Remake Intergrade supplies the opening chapter: it follows the party’s escape from Midgar (Square Enix’s Remake page). That context makes it the more satisfying place to begin if you care about meeting the characters and following the plot in sequence.
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
Should you play Remake Intergrade first?
- Start with Remake Intergrade if you want the intended story order, the project’s first chapter, and more context for the returning characters.
- Go straight to Rebirth if you are comfortable joining a continuing story mid-project, or if the exploration and combat in this game matter more to you than following every plot beat from the beginning.
For a reader asking, “Never played FF7. Confused by all the remake titles. Where do I start?”, the clearest story-first answer is Remake Intergrade, then Rebirth. Choosing Rebirth first is a reasonable alternative for someone who accepts that it is part two and wants to try its particular mix of exploration, combat, and optional content.

How does the combat and pacing affect the experience?
Combat and party synergy are among Rebirth’s strongest points in the reviews cited above. The game is a better fit if you want action-oriented encounters with tactical abilities and coordination between party members, rather than a narrow focus on story scenes alone.

The pacing is less consistent. Optional activities can deepen the world or give characters room to interact, but they can also pull attention away from the main plot. You do not have to treat every activity as mandatory: focus on the quests and challenges you find engaging, and move on when a detour begins to feel like an interruption.
