What is the current status of a Final Fantasy IX remake?
The remake remains unannounced. In February 2026, TechRadar reported that Square Enix had not officially confirmed one. On August 10–11, 2026, Nintendo Life relayed comments attributed to Alex Donaldson, RPG Site editor, describing a purported single-game remake as having been very far along before it stalled and was no longer moving forward. Donaldson also said the path could change.

Those remarks are a report about an alleged project, not a Square Enix announcement. GamesRadar+ likewise reported that Square Enix had made nothing official. Current reporting does not establish a release date, platforms, confirmed scope, why the reported project stalled, or whether work might resume. It is accurate to say the remake has not been officially announced and that an outside report says a purported project stalled; it is not accurate to call it officially cancelled or confirmed.

What did the “new FF9 release” reports refer to?
Not every recent FF9 headline has been about a game. TechRadar noted that the “new FF9 release” chatter it discussed in February 2026 referred to a Vivi children’s storybook, not a new video game. The same article traced remake speculation to a large NVIDIA leak, but a leak is not an official announcement.

What the original Final Fantasy IX offers
A character-led fantasy journey
Square Enix’s synopsis begins with Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe kidnapping Princess Garnet, who wanted to escape Alexandria’s castle. Garnet and her guard Steiner join Zidane on a larger journey. They meet characters including Vivi and Quina, learn about themselves and the Crystal, and confront a threat to their world. Square Enix says the game has sold over five million copies since its 2000 release — Square Enix, 2025 (store listing).
Equipment-based abilities and character growth
Abilities are learned by equipping items; after a character masters an ability, it remains available without that item. This gives equipment a role beyond its immediate stats and lets players shape characters as they progress. Trance adds another combat system: when its gauge fills, a character can use powerful skills.
Synthesis and optional activities
Synthesis combines items or equipment to create stronger items. The game also includes minigames such as Chocobo Hot and Cold, Jump Rope, and Tetra Master, with item rewards. These systems give players reasons to explore and engage with activities outside the main story.
What changes in the enhanced editions?
These are quality-of-life additions to editions of the original game, not evidence of a remake. Square Enix lists the following for its Nintendo Switch edition:

These details are specific to the listed editions; the available sources do not establish feature parity across every platform.
How to play the original while the remake is uncertain
If you would rather play than wait for a formal announcement, Square Enix lists FINAL FANTASY IX for Nintendo Switch as a physical product. Its store page gives a release date of December 9, 2025. Check the store listing for current availability in your region; the edition is the original game with listed enhancements, not a remake.
If you prefer to wait, look for a direct Square Enix announcement before treating a date, platform, or project status as confirmed. The outside reports discussed here do not settle any of those details.
