Naoki Hamaguchi says he argued for a physical edition of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, but he did not control the final product format. The director says product-lineup and SKU decisions belong to Square Enix’s publishing team. The planned PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions are physical discs, but reports say they contain only the opening portion and require an internet download for additional game data.
What Hamaguchi said about the physical edition
In an interview with Radio Times, Hamaguchi said he personally values physical games and wants a physical version of a title he cares about. He also acknowledged fans asking for a complete disc release, including people expressing the view, “No disc, no purchase.” Those social-media comments are examples, not evidence of a representative survey.

“In this day and age, as we’ve been talking about, there’s a lot of pressure for disc-less editions, digital editions, and I used my position to put forth an argument for the physical version as much as possible,” Hamaguchi said.
Why the director says he could not decide the format
Hamaguchi distinguished his creative responsibility from the commercial decisions about how the game is sold. He said his role is to make sure the game is fun and exciting, while the publishing team handles the product lineup and SKUs, or stock keeping units. He described his authority over those decisions as limited.

That distinction matters: Hamaguchi says he advocated for a physical release, but he does not claim to have chosen the number of discs or the final format. He said he understands why some fans do not approve of the direction and hopes they recognize that he did his best.
What “physical” means for each reported edition
The formats differ by platform, and a physical box or card should not be taken to mean the full game is stored on the medium. GamesRadar+’s report says the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions use a single disc and require an internet connection to download additional game data before play. Radio Times quotes Hamaguchi describing the disc as a “key disc” containing the opening, with the rest downloaded.

The cited coverage reports an April 8, 2027 release date, with versions planned for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is described as the concluding entry in the remake trilogy that began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020. Could a future physical release be disc-less?
Hamaguchi suggested that future physical editions could take the form of a retail box containing a code rather than a disc. He was describing a possible direction, not announcing a confirmed industry-wide plan.
