Final Fantasy 7 Remake Materia FAQs: AP, Slots, Linking, and Mastering

Materia is Final Fantasy VII Remake’s interchangeable ability system. You place orbs in weapon and armor slots to give a character spells, commands, passive bonuses, support effects, or a summon. Equipped materia earns its own AP and levels independently of the character, while connected slots let compatible Support materia modify another orb. The most important practical rule is that two materia must be in a visibly linked pair; merely placing them next to each other does nothing.

This guide covers the Remake mechanics rather than the 1997 original or assumptions from another entry. Menu wording can vary slightly by platform or language, and downloadable summon entitlements depend on the edition you own.

What materia does in Final Fantasy VII Remake

Materia separates a character’s available abilities from the character’s level and weapon choice. Move an orb to another playable character and that character can generally use the same spell, command, passive effect, or support interaction, provided the new equipment has a suitable slot.

The five practical categories

Category What it provides Typical use
Magic Spells tied to an element or utility effect Cast Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, healing, or other available magic
Support Effects that modify another materia or a combat behavior Link Elemental to an elemental spell, or Magnify to a spell that should reach multiple targets
Command Additional command abilities Give a character an action that is not part of the normal basic command set
Complete Standalone passive or utility bonuses Add a benefit that does not require a linked partner
Summoning A summon ability when the relevant conditions are met Equip an available summon in a compatible slot and use it during qualifying battles

The category tells you what kind of orb you are handling, but it does not tell you every compatibility rule. Support materia is not universally compatible with every other color or category.

How to equip, move, and inspect materia

Use the English-release menu labels below as a reference. Translations or platform layouts may change the wording, but the sequence is the same.

  1. Open the pause menu and choose Materia & Equipment.
  2. Select the character whose loadout you want to change.
  3. Choose the weapon or armor panel. Each item displays its available slots; a connected pair is shown as two slots joined by a line.
  4. Select an empty slot, then choose a materia from the inventory list. Confirm the assignment.
  5. To move an orb, select its occupied slot and choose another open slot or replace it with a different orb. Check the resulting spell, command, or support description before leaving the menu.

Changing equipment can change the number and arrangement of slots. A materia that worked in a linked combination on one weapon may become unlinked when moved to another weapon or to armor. Recheck the lines between slots after every equipment change.

What AP does and how materia levels

AP is experience for the equipped materia, not for the character. A materia earns AP from battles while it is equipped, and its progress is tracked separately from every other orb. When it reaches a level threshold, the game can unlock a stronger spell tier, an expanded effect, or another ability listed in that materia’s description.

What is known about AP requirements

There is no single AP number that applies to every materia. Different orbs have different level requirements, and the available evidence does not establish a complete authoritative table for every level. Do not use a universal “mastery takes X AP” claim as a planning rule. Read the individual orb’s level display and treat its progress bar as the reliable indicator for your current copy.

How to make AP progress reliably

  • Keep the target materia equipped for the battles in which you want it to gain AP. An orb in your inventory does not progress.
  • Use a slot on the character who will actually participate. If a character is unavailable for a section, their equipped orb may not receive the practical battle time you expected.
  • Inspect the orb after major fights to confirm that its level or progress changed.
  • When you replace a weapon or armor piece, verify that the target orb was transferred and that its new slot still supports any combination you need.

AP progression is independent for each copy. Equipping the same type of materia on two characters does not merge their progress; each equipped copy advances from its own AP total.

How do linked materia slots work?

A linked pair is a physical connection between two slots on the same weapon or armor piece. Put the Support materia in one side and a compatible target materia in the other. The connection, not simple proximity, activates the interaction.

Setting up a linked pair

  1. In Materia & Equipment, select a weapon or armor that visibly has a connected pair.
  2. Place the Support orb in one linked slot.
  3. Place the target orb in the other linked slot.
  4. Open the resulting descriptions or combat preview and confirm that the support effect is listed.
  5. Test the arrangement in a safe encounter before committing to it for a difficult fight, especially when the effect changes targeting or defense.

Two compatible materia in separate, unconnected slots do not produce a linked effect. Likewise, a blue Support orb may require a particular type of partner; compatibility is not automatic across all magic, command, complete, and summon materia.

Common compatibility examples

Support materia Target example Result to look for
Elemental Fire, Ice, Lightning, or Wind Adds the selected element to weapon attacks or provides elemental protection on armor
Magnify Healing Allows the healing spell to affect multiple allies when the broad-target option is selected
AP Up Any chosen materia you want to advance Boosts AP gained by the linked target according to the effect description

These are examples, not a complete compatibility chart. If the game does not show a support effect after you connect the pair, check both the slot line and the specific materia descriptions before assuming the combination works.

Elemental on a weapon versus Elemental on armor

Elemental is the clearest example of why equipment location matters. Link it to an elemental magic orb such as Fire, Ice, Lightning, or Wind, then decide whether the pair belongs on a weapon or armor.

Placement What the linked pair is for When to choose it
Weapon Adds the linked element to attacks Use when you want ordinary strikes and weapon abilities to carry an elemental property against a susceptible enemy
Armor Provides protection against the linked element Use when an encounter repeatedly deals that element and survival is more valuable than added attack coverage

The exact strength of the defensive or offensive effect depends on the game’s displayed materia level and effect text. Do not assume an unverified percentage or a particular tier multiplier. The strategic choice is consistent: weapon placement favors elemental damage, while armor placement favors mitigation.

Magnify and the broad-target trade-off

Magnify changes how a compatible spell is targeted. Linked with Healing, it can extend the spell to multiple allies. That convenience comes with a decision: broad coverage is useful when several party members need help, while a single-target cast is preferable when one character needs the strongest focused treatment or when conserving the spell’s effectiveness matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a targeting mode

  • Use broad targeting when area damage has left several allies hurt or when you need one command to stabilize the whole party.
  • Use single-target targeting when only one ally is injured, when you need precise control, or when the encounter rewards concentrating the spell.
  • Recheck the setting before a boss attempt. Magnify is a tactical option, not a permanent “best” configuration for every fight.

Using AP Up without chasing a universal “best” pairing

AP Up is a Support option intended to accelerate the progression of a linked materia. The useful target is the orb you actually want to level, not a single combination that is best for every party or difficulty.

  1. Choose the materia whose next level matters to your current plan, such as a spell you rely on or a utility orb you have just acquired.
  2. Equip AP Up and the target materia in a visibly connected pair on the same piece of equipment.
  3. Keep both equipped through battles in which the target can earn AP.
  4. Check the target’s progress after several encounters. If the progress is not changing, verify that the target is equipped, the slots are linked, and the character is taking part in battles.
  5. Once the target reaches the level you need, reclaim the slot for another support combination if your next area calls for different damage, defense, or targeting.

A guide may use Revival as an example target, but that does not make it the universal best choice. Your priority could instead be elemental coverage, healing, a command ability, or a newly obtained orb whose next level changes how you play.

What “mastering” means in Remake

In practical terms, mastering means advancing an individual materia through its available levels until the game shows that it has reached its final progression state. The important distinction is that mastery belongs to that materia copy and is achieved through AP; it is not the same as raising the character’s level.

What you can safely plan around

  • Keep the orb equipped and monitor its own level display.
  • Use AP Up when the faster progression is worth giving up another Support slot.
  • Read the final-level description so you know what the completed orb actually grants.
  • Retain a backup configuration if removing the orb would cost an important linked effect during the current chapter.

What not to assume

Do not import the 1997 game’s duplicate-creation behavior or a mastery reward from memory. The available documentation does not verify a universal duplicate rule for Remake, nor does it provide a dependable AP total for every materia. If you need a second copy, treat that as a separate acquisition question rather than assuming mastery automatically creates one.

How to equip downloaded summon materia

Square Enix’s support instructions for specified downloaded summons use the Materia & Equipment menu. Open that menu, enter Weapons, select an available weapon slot, and equip the summon materia. The support guidance also notes that the menu appears only after you reach certain points in the game.

This is menu guidance for eligible downloaded summons, not proof that every summon is downloadable content or that every platform and edition includes the same entitlement. If the orb is not present, check that the content was redeemed for the correct account and edition, then progress until the equipment menu becomes available.

Troubleshooting materia problems

The combination does nothing

  • Look for the connecting line between the two slots. Adjacent circles without a line are unlinked.
  • Confirm that the Support orb is compatible with the target orb.
  • Make sure both materia are on the same weapon or armor piece; placing one on a weapon and one on armor cannot create a pair.

AP is not increasing

  • Confirm the orb is equipped rather than sitting in the inventory.
  • Check that the character carrying it is active in the battles you are counting.
  • Inspect the progress display after a completed battle, not during a menu preview.
  • If AP Up is involved, verify that it and the target occupy connected slots.

An elemental effect is the opposite of what you wanted

Move the linked pair to the correct equipment location. Weapon placement is for adding elemental damage; armor placement is for protection. Recheck the effect text after moving it.

A summon is missing from the menu

Verify the summon’s edition or downloadable-content entitlement and continue until the game unlocks the relevant Materia & Equipment menu. The presence of a summon in promotional or physical-edition materials does not establish that every release includes it automatically.

Remake, the original, and INTERmission are not interchangeable

Final Fantasy VII Remake has its own slot, AP, linking, and progression behavior. The 1997 original uses a different presentation and should not be used to fill gaps in Remake’s mastery rules. INTERmission contains additional playable content and may present different acquisition circumstances, but a mechanic or reward seen there should not be generalized to every Remake scenario without checking the specific edition and chapter.

A practical loadout checklist

  1. Identify the goal: damage, elemental defense, healing coverage, a command, or AP progression.
  2. Choose a weapon or armor piece with the required number of slots.
  3. Confirm which slots are linked before selecting Support materia.
  4. Read each orb’s description and level progress.
  5. Equip the target and Support orb together on the same connected pair.
  6. Enter a battle, verify that the effect behaves as expected, and adjust the targeting or equipment location if necessary.
  7. After the encounter, check AP progress and preserve the arrangement only if it still serves the next fight.
