If Final Cut Pro can open your library but clips show missing-media warnings, relink them to media files that still exist. If recent edits or library organization are gone, open a dated library backup. If the original footage itself has been deleted, the app’s automatic library backups will not restore it: they contain library database information, not media files.
First identify what is missing
A Final Cut Pro library stores database information and project organization. Clips refer to media files, which may be stored inside the library or elsewhere on your Mac or connected storage. A missing-media warning can therefore mean that a file’s location changed—not that the footage was deleted. Apple explains this distinction in its media organization guidance.

- Library opens, clips are missing: look for the original media or proxy files and relink them.
- Library or recent edits are missing: restore an available library database backup.
- Original footage is deleted or unavailable: check other copies and backups; restoring a library alone will not recreate the media.
Relink clips when the media still exists
If files were moved or renamed in Finder, Final Cut Pro may show red frames or yellow alert triangles. Relinking repairs the connection between clips and existing media; it does not recover a file that no longer exists.
- Find the original media or proxy files on the Mac, external storage, camera card, or another copy. Keep the files in place while you relink.
- In Final Cut Pro, select the affected clips, event, or library.
- Choose File > Relink Files > Original Media or File > Relink Files > Proxy Media, depending on what is missing.
- Locate the matching files or a folder that contains them. Review Final Cut Pro’s match analysis and remove any incorrect proposed matches.
- Choose Relink Files only after verifying the matches.
Apple notes that matching files need to include the media referenced by the clips and have compatible attributes, such as media type and frame rate, with similar audio channels. The relink command cannot be undone, so check the proposed matches carefully before applying it. See Apple’s relinking instructions.

Restore a library database backup
Final Cut Pro automatically backs up the database portion of libraries. By default, backups are in the Final Cut Pro Backups folder in Movies, although the backup location can be changed. Backup names include a date and time, and Final Cut Pro automatically deletes backups older than several days.
- Open Final Cut Pro and choose File > Open Library > From Backup.
- Select the library and the dated backup that represents the state you want.
- Open the backup. The restored library appears in the sidebar.
Apple states: “Backups include the database portion of libraries only, not the media files.” A backup can restore the library database state represented by that backup, but it cannot restore footage imported afterward or source media absent from other storage. If media files exist elsewhere, use the relinking process to reconnect them. Follow Apple’s library restore instructions.

If the original footage was deleted
Before assuming footage is permanently lost, check the camera card or capture device if it has not been reused, other attached drives, transfer copies, and your computer or drive backup system. Apple recommends keeping separate copies and documents ways to copy libraries with media, but its library backups are not a substitute for copies of the source files.
If the footage may have been deleted from a drive, the appropriate next step depends on the storage device and what has happened since deletion. The Apple guidance cited here does not establish a universal recovery procedure, guarantee that deleted files can be recovered, or validate particular recovery tools or services. Do not treat a restored library as evidence that the underlying footage has been restored.

Set up backups that cover both the library and footage
A more resilient workflow keeps independent copies of library information and source media, with a copy on a device or partition separate from the working media. Apple documents manual project, event, and library backup approaches, automatic library database backups, project snapshots, and options for collecting media in one location in its backup guidance.
- Keep media copies: use Final Cut Pro’s consolidate-media options to copy media to the chosen library or external storage location. A database backup by itself does not include those files.
- Copy libraries deliberately: when copying a library, choose whether to include original, optimized, or proxy media. Library backups themselves are not copied with the library.
- Account for creative dependencies: third-party FxPlug content is not managed in the library, and custom Motion content needs deliberate handling.
- Choose suitable external storage: Apple recommends APFS for external storage used for Final Cut Pro libraries. A drive used for Time Machine backups cannot also store a library.
- Separate the working copy from the backup: an external drive can hold a separate copy of the library and media, but it is preventive storage, not a way to recover footage already lost.
Apple’s documentation for storage locations, copying or moving a library, and moving a library to external storage covers these options. It does not endorse a particular drive model.

Quick decision guide
| What you see | What to try | What it can restore |
|---|---|---|
| Library opens, but clips show missing-media alerts | Locate existing media and relink original or proxy media | The clip’s connection to an existing file; not a deleted file |
| Library organization or recent edits are missing | Open a dated backup using File > Open Library > From Backup | The database state saved in that backup; not media files |
| Original footage is missing or deleted | Check capture media, other storage, transfer copies, and drive backups | Only a separate existing copy can supply the footage; recovery is not guaranteed |
