Short answer: FilmCraft is worth testing for a new, self-contained project when you want an open-source, Premiere-like editor and can accept alpha-stage software. Premiere Pro is the safer choice for an active production that depends on .prproj files, VST3/Audio Units/OpenFX plug-ins, unusual camera media, demanding delivery codecs, or predictable support.
The deciding factor is not a feature-count percentage. It is whether FilmCraft can ingest your actual media, preserve the timeline decisions you need, run reliably on your operating system, and produce the exact deliverables your client or platform accepts. A short trial on a representative project is more informative than a generic benchmark.

Those figures measure different things. Feature breadth asks how many areas have some implementation; readiness also weighs depth, correctness, file compatibility, speed, stability and ecosystem. An 86% breadth estimate therefore does not mean FilmCraft can replace Premiere Pro on 86% of projects.

FilmCraft is an open-source, clean-room take on the Premiere Pro workflow, written in Rust. The project describes native applications for macOS, Windows and Linux, along with a WebAssembly version that runs in a browser. Its stated goal is familiarity: someone who already understands Premiere’s panels, workspaces, tools and shortcuts should not have to learn an entirely different editing model.

The project describes support for editing and trimming, multicamera work, color tools, keyframes, effects, titles, captions, audio mixing and export. That list describes the areas the maintainers are implementing; it does not establish identical depth, performance or format coverage in every area. FilmCraft’s own README cautions that it is “young and moving fast,” an important qualification for anyone considering it for a deadline-bound production.
How to interpret the 86% and 56% estimates
In 2026, FilmCraft’s maintainers published an approximate 86% feature-breadth estimate and an approximate 56% real-work-readiness estimate. Their roadmap says readiness considers more than whether a button exists: depth, correctness, file compatibility, speed, stability and ecosystem all affect the assessment.
- Feature breadth: useful for seeing how much of a conventional editor’s surface area the project has attempted.
- Readiness: a warning that incomplete behavior, compatibility gaps or instability can still interrupt a real job.
- Independence: both numbers come from the project maintainers. They are not laboratory measurements, customer surveys or an independent benchmark.
Use the estimates as a reason to test FilmCraft, not as a replacement for testing.

FilmCraft is intentionally organized around Premiere-style concepts. Familiar panels, workspaces, tools and keyboard shortcuts can reduce the interface-relearning cost when moving a personal project or evaluating an alternative editor. The intended benefit is continuity of editing habits rather than compatibility with Premiere’s files or plug-ins.
A TechRadar hands-on review found the interface familiar. In the build reviewed, creating a project, importing clips, adding them to a sequence and working with multiple layers behaved as expected. The reviewer could not manually drag a clip edge to trim, although the blade tool worked. That is an observation of one build, not a controlled usability test and not proof that every current build behaves the same way.
Plan for small workflow differences even when the layout looks recognizable. During a trial, perform the specific actions your team uses every day—slip and slide adjustments, trimming with the mouse, multicamera switching, caption changes, audio keyframes and effect parameter edits—instead of judging compatibility from screenshots.

Compatibility issues that can decide the purchase
Premiere project files
FilmCraft cannot directly open Premiere .prproj files. The project lists FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL and AAF as interchange options, but the available documentation does not establish complete round-trip fidelity for any particular project.

That distinction matters. An interchange file may carry clips and basic edits while losing or altering nested sequences, transitions, effects, titles, captions, multicamera decisions, speed changes, audio routing or other timeline details. Treat interchange as a migration path to validate, not as a guarantee.
If you have years of Premiere archives, keep Premiere available for those archives. Export a copy of one representative sequence through the interchange format you intend to use, then compare clip boundaries, track layout, timing, media links, audio, effects and final output before committing to a larger migration.
Third-party plug-ins
According to FilmCraft’s project documentation, it does not host VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX plug-ins. A project that depends on a particular noise-reduction effect, instrument, limiter, color effect or title package is therefore a poor migration candidate until an equivalent FilmCraft-native tool or a rendered replacement has been verified.
- List every plug-in used in the timeline, including audio inserts, master-bus processing and title or graphics effects.
- Separate irreplaceable processing from effects that can be rendered or recreated.
- Open a copy of the project in FilmCraft and confirm that the intended substitute produces an acceptable result at the required sample rate, frame rate and resolution.
- Keep the original Premiere project and plug-in setup untouched until the substitute has passed review.
Delivery codecs and encoding paths
FilmCraft’s maintainers state that H.264 is its only software delivery-codec export. H.265 export depends on supported hardware encoding, and AV1 export is not available. “Supported hardware” is not a universal promise: it depends on the operating system, GPU or other encoder path and the build in use.
Before choosing FilmCraft, write down the actual delivery specification: codec, container, frame size, frame rate, chroma format, bit depth, audio format, bitrate or quality target and whether hardware encoding is required. Then make a short export on the exact computer and operating system planned for production. A file that exports successfully is not necessarily compliant with a broadcaster, client, archive or platform’s validation rules.

The available project information does not establish universal support for every container, bit depth or hardware encoder. Verify each one rather than inferring it from the presence of an export button.
Camera formats, long projects and performance
The project identifies camera RAW support, large-footage speed and real-world coverage of camera and phone media as limitations. It also says some rendering work remains CPU-bound and that platform testing is uneven. These are project statements, not independent performance measurements.
For a demanding project, test the media that causes problems in your current workflow: RAW clips, high-resolution originals, variable-frame-rate phone footage, long recordings, multicamera angles and clips stored on the intended drive. Check import time, scrubbing, playback at the target resolution, proxy or preview behavior if used, effect rendering, autosave or recovery behavior and export completion. FilmCraft’s native targets span macOS, Windows and Linux, with a WebAssembly build as an additional route. That breadth does not mean every feature is equally tested on every platform. The documentation specifically notes uneven platform testing.
Use the exact OS version, GPU, driver, storage and display configuration planned for the job during the trial. If more than one editor will work on the project, repeat the basic open, edit, save and export checks on each platform. Keep a known-good fallback installation for the duration of the production.

.prprojarchive without rebuilding the edit. - The timeline relies on VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX plug-ins that FilmCraft cannot host.
- Your delivery requires AV1, a particular H.265 path, or another codec and encoder combination that FilmCraft has not passed on your hardware.
- The footage includes camera RAW, very large or long media, or device-generated files that you cannot afford to troubleshoot during production.
- A client, broadcaster or post-production partner requires an established Premiere handoff.
- The schedule leaves no room for alpha-stage bugs, uneven platform behavior or an emergency migration back to another editor.
This is a risk decision, not a claim that Premiere is faster or better in every operation. The evidence available here does not provide a standardized independent performance ranking.

When FilmCraft is a sensible first trial
FilmCraft is a reasonable candidate for a new project when all of these conditions are true:
- The project can start from imported media rather than an existing
.prprojtimeline. - You do not depend on VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX plug-ins, or you have already verified replacements.
- Your required delivery can be produced through FilmCraft’s available H.264 software path or a confirmed H.265 hardware path.
- Your camera and phone media have passed a short import, playback and export test.
- Your team can tolerate alpha software and has a fallback editor and an untouched copy of the source media.
- The operating system and hardware you will use are included in your trial, rather than assumed from another platform.
That profile fits a self-contained edit, a personal project, a prototype, an educational exercise or a team willing to help validate an evolving open-source tool. It does not automatically fit a commercial job with a fixed handoff specification.
Cost, licensing and what “free” changes
FilmCraft is described by its maintainers as free and dual-licensed under the MIT or Apache-2.0 licenses. That can remove a subscription barrier and make it easier to install for evaluation or to keep available as a fallback.
Free licensing does not remove production costs. You still need compatible hardware, storage, time for validation, backup space and a plan for projects that cannot be opened or exported as expected. Conversely, a commercial subscription can be rational when it buys continuity with an existing archive, plug-in investment and client workflow. Current Premiere Pro pricing and plan terms vary by region and date and are not specified here, so check Adobe’s official pricing information before budgeting.

How to test FilmCraft before switching
Use a test that resembles the job you actually deliver. Do not judge an editor only by opening its welcome screen or cutting a few sample clips.
- Define the acceptance checklist. Record the target frame rate, resolution, audio settings, delivery codec, container, bit depth, storage location, operating system and hardware. List every effect, plug-in, caption type and handoff requirement.
- Collect representative media. Include the most difficult camera or phone files, a long clip, a high-resolution clip, every audio type and at least one multicamera or layered section if the real project uses them.
- Install the exact build on the exact platform. Use the computer, drivers, storage and display setup intended for production. If the team uses multiple platforms, repeat the test on each.
- Recreate a short but difficult sequence. Include trims, blade edits, multiple layers, transitions, keyframes, titles, captions, color adjustments, audio mixing and any multicamera operation you depend on.
- Check everyday editing actions. Confirm that the mouse and keyboard operations your editors use are available and predictable. In particular, test edge trimming rather than assuming a familiar interface guarantees identical behavior.
- Test interchange only when needed. Export a representative sequence through FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL or AAF as applicable. Reopen it and inspect timing, media links, track structure, effects, captions, audio and multicamera decisions manually.
- Verify effects and audio. Confirm each required plug-in-dependent result has an acceptable substitute. Listen for level, routing and synchronization changes; do not rely on a timeline that merely appears populated.
- Export the real deliverable. Use the intended H.264 software path or confirmed H.265 hardware path. Check the resulting file in the same validation tool or delivery system used by the client.
- Repeat the test after closing and reopening. Save, quit, reopen and render again. This catches failures that a single uninterrupted session may hide.
- Keep a fallback. Preserve the original media, project files and Premiere installation or another known-good workflow until the FilmCraft project has been delivered and accepted.

Project-by-project recommendations
New personal or low-risk edit
Start with FilmCraft if the media is ordinary, the delivery is H.264 or a confirmed H.265 hardware path, and no plug-ins or Premiere archive are involved. Keep the test project small enough to repeat, but difficult enough to expose your real editing habits.
Existing client series or agency archive
Keep the active work in Premiere when the source of truth is a collection of .prproj files, shared plug-ins or established handoff procedures. FilmCraft can still be evaluated on a new, isolated project without putting the archive at risk.
Camera-RAW or high-volume production
Do not switch on the strength of feature breadth alone. The project’s own documentation flags RAW support and large-footage speed as limitations. Require a successful import, edit, reopen and final export on representative originals before making a production commitment.

FilmCraft’s MIT or Apache-2.0 licensing and native macOS, Windows and Linux targets may be attractive when licensing flexibility and platform choice are priorities. Standardize the tested build and platform configuration, and document a fallback because the project is still alpha.
Final decision
FilmCraft can replace Premiere Pro for some workflows, but not by default. It is best treated as a promising open-source alternative for new projects whose media, plug-ins, export requirements and risk tolerance fit its current limits. Premiere Pro remains the practical choice for projects that must preserve .prproj continuity, use unsupported plug-ins, handle unverified media, meet codec requirements FilmCraft cannot satisfy, or ship on a deadline with little room for recovery.
The most defensible choice is conditional: run the complete representative-project test on the exact hardware and operating system, keep the original workflow available, and switch only when the resulting timeline and deliverable meet your acceptance checklist.
