Files Missing After Reboot in Windows 10? Find Your Desktop, Documents, and OneDrive Data

An empty Desktop or Documents folder after Windows 10 starts does not prove that your files were deleted. Windows may be showing a different folder target, a OneDrive-synced location, a temporary user profile, or a path changed during an upgrade. Start by searching the entire computer, then check OneDrive online, redirected known folders, the original user profile, and upgrade-related locations.

The steps below are designed to locate the existing copies before you move, restore, or overwrite anything. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so once your files are safe, plan a supported operating-system migration or another security arrangement.

Why Windows 10 can show an empty Desktop after a reboot

Windows displays files through folder paths and user profiles. If either changes, the familiar folder can look blank even though the data remains on the local disk or in cloud storage. The most common explanations are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Search or visibility issue: the files are present but hidden, stored under a different extension, or not being viewed in the folder you expect.
  • OneDrive Known Folder Move: Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Screenshots, or Camera Roll may have been redirected into your OneDrive folder. Existing content is merged there rather than duplicated in the old local path.
  • Temporary or corrupted profile: Windows can sign you into a fresh-looking profile while your original files remain under the original C:Users<username> directory.
  • Upgrade relocation: a Windows upgrade can change file locations. Microsoft documented an October 2018 Update Known Folder Move incident in which files remained in OneDrive while the former folder was removed.

These cases require different recovery actions. Do not immediately create replacement files with the same names or drag folders between locations; doing so can create duplicates or overwrite a newer synchronized copy.

First, search the whole PC

Searching is the safest first move because the result reveals the actual path, which is more trustworthy than the folder name shown in File Explorer’s navigation pane.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC in the left pane. Selecting a specific Desktop or Documents folder limits the search and can miss a relocated copy.
  3. Use the search box in the upper-right corner and enter the complete filename. Wait for indexing and disk searching to finish.
  4. If you do not know the filename, search by extension, such as *.doc, *.docx, *.jpg, *.png, *.pdf, or the extension used by your application.
  5. Right-click a likely result and choose Open file location. Record the full path before opening, moving, or renaming the file.

Compare the path with the location you expected. A path beginning with C:Usersyour-nameOneDrive indicates a synchronized OneDrive copy. A different username points to another profile. A location under a backup, old Windows, or another drive suggests an upgrade or relocation event.

Show hidden items

In File Explorer, open View and enable Hidden items. Then search This PC again. Hidden files can include folders that an application or migration process marked as hidden. Do not change system-protected attributes or delete unfamiliar folders merely because they are hidden; first verify the path and file dates.

Use file dates and sizes to identify the right copy

When search returns multiple copies, add columns such as Date modified, Size, and Location. Open a copy only after checking that its timestamp and size match the work you remember. For documents, use Open with rather than saving over the first result. This preserves the ability to compare local and synchronized versions.

Check OneDrive on the web

If OneDrive backup or Known Folder Move was enabled, OneDrive.com is the best place to start because it is where synchronized devices store their cloud copies. A reboot can expose an account or sync state different from the one you were using before.

  1. Open OneDrive.com in a browser.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that was connected to the affected Windows installation. If you have more than one Microsoft account, test each one rather than assuming the currently displayed account is correct.
  3. Use the site’s search function to search for the filename or extension.
  4. Open the Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders in OneDrive and inspect their subfolders.
  5. Open the OneDrive Recycle Bin. A file removed during a sync or folder change may be recoverable there, subject to OneDrive’s retention rules and your account type.

Do not empty the OneDrive Recycle Bin while investigating. If you find the file online, download a separate copy or use OneDrive’s restore options only after checking whether a newer local copy exists.

Confirm the OneDrive account and sync state

On the Windows taskbar, select the OneDrive cloud icon and open its settings or account information. Confirm that the account matches the one you checked online. A paused, signed-out, or recently changed account can make the local OneDrive folder look incomplete even though the web copy is intact. Allow synchronization to finish on a stable connection before judging that a file is absent.

Inspect redirected Desktop, Documents, and other known folders

Known Folder Move can redirect standard Windows folders into OneDrive and merge existing contents. The folder may still be labeled Desktop or Documents, but its path is now inside OneDrive.

Check each folder’s actual location

  1. In File Explorer, right-click Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Screenshots, or Camera Roll in the navigation pane.
  2. Choose Properties, then open the Location tab when it is available.
  3. Read the complete path. Compare it with the path from your search result.
  4. Open the corresponding folder inside your OneDrive directory and look for the files there.

If the Location tab is unavailable, use Open file location on a known file in that folder, or browse to C:Users<username>OneDrive and inspect the standard subfolders. The path shown for an actual file is the decisive evidence.

Restore a local location without losing newer copies

Changing a known folder back to a local path can move files and trigger synchronization. Before changing it, make a separate copy of important files to another drive or a clearly named holding folder. Compare modification dates between the OneDrive and local versions. If both contain changes, preserve both copies and rename one with its date rather than accepting an overwrite prompt blindly.

Check whether Windows loaded a temporary or different profile

A new-looking desktop with default shortcuts, missing application settings, or a message that you have been signed in with a temporary profile strongly suggests that Windows did not load the normal profile. Your data may still be in the original profile directory.

  1. Open File Explorer and browse to C:Users.
  2. Look for the username you normally use, along with any similarly named folders such as one with a suffix.
  3. Open the original folder and inspect Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and application-specific folders.
  4. Use the search procedure above within the original profile to locate specific files.
  5. Do not delete the old profile or rename folders while troubleshooting.

If the original files are present, follow Microsoft’s corrupted-profile guidance for Windows 10. The usual safe approach is to create or repair a permanent account, sign in to it, and copy personal data from the old profile. Copy data rather than moving it until you have verified that documents open correctly and that any OneDrive synchronization has settled.

Signs that you are in the wrong profile

  • The desktop has default Windows icons but none of your custom shortcuts.
  • Applications behave as if they were launched for the first time.
  • Your normal browser profile, wallpaper, or settings are missing.
  • The path in File Explorer contains a different username than before.
  • Windows displays a temporary-profile warning or repeatedly signs you into a fresh desktop.

These signs do not establish that files were erased. They establish that the active profile is not presenting the folder that held them previously.

Account for a Windows upgrade or feature update

If the disappearance began immediately after an upgrade, search first and trust the resulting path. Microsoft warns that some files can move during a Windows 10 upgrade. Check both the current profile and OneDrive location, especially if Known Folder Move was enabled.

Compare the old and new paths

  1. Search This PC by filename or extension.
  2. For each result, use Open file location and write down the full path.
  3. Inspect the old expected path and the path shown in the result separately.
  4. Check OneDrive.com and its Recycle Bin even if the local OneDrive folder appears empty.
  5. Review file dates around the upgrade date to identify the copy that contains your latest edits.

In the documented October 2018 Update Known Folder Move incident, files were preserved in the OneDrive location while the old folder was removed. That history is why checking only the former local path is insufficient.

Do not rely on the Windows.old folder as your only explanation

An upgrade may leave system files in an old installation directory, but personal files can instead be in the current profile or OneDrive. Search by filename and follow the path shown by the result rather than assuming every missing document is under one particular upgrade folder.

Choose the recovery path that matches what you found

What you observe Where the files most likely reside Are they synchronized? Best next action Overwrite risk
Search result is under OneDrive OneDrive local folder and possibly the cloud copy Usually yes, if sync is active Confirm the account, inspect OneDrive.com, and let sync complete High if you replace a local copy before comparing timestamps
Files are under another C:Users username Original or alternate user profile on the local disk Not necessarily Repair or replace the profile using Microsoft’s guidance, then copy personal data High if the old profile is deleted or moved prematurely
Files appear only after enabling Hidden items Local disk in a hidden folder or file state Not necessarily Verify attributes and application access before changing visibility Moderate; avoid bulk attribute changes
Files appear in a path associated with an upgrade Relocated local path, OneDrive, or another profile Depends on location Compare all copies by path, date, and size; preserve the newest version High when accepting merge or replace prompts
No local result, but OneDrive search finds the file Cloud storage Yes Download a separate copy and repair the local sync/account state Low if downloaded to a new folder

When searches find nothing

Verify the filename and extension, search every fixed drive shown under This PC, and check whether an external drive or memory card was disconnected. Look at OneDrive.com under every relevant Microsoft account. If a file was deleted, inspect both the local Recycle Bin and OneDrive Recycle Bin before using cleanup tools.

If the file is absent from local searches, all OneDrive accounts, and both recycle bins, stop making changes that could overwrite free space. At that point, the evidence does not establish whether the file was deleted, moved to an unmounted drive, or lost through a prior sync or cleanup event. Preserve the computer’s current state and consider professional data-recovery advice rather than installing several recovery utilities onto the same drive.

Prevent the same confusion after recovery

  • Record the full path of important working folders, especially when OneDrive Known Folder Move is enabled.
  • Keep a second backup that is not continuously synchronized with the computer.
  • Before a feature update, verify that OneDrive synchronization is complete and that critical files are available online.
  • Use distinctive filenames and retain version history instead of repeatedly saving over one copy.
  • Check which Microsoft account is connected whenever a new Windows profile or device is set up.
  • Because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, schedule migration to a supported Windows release or another supported platform after your data is secured.
