For routine shovel sharpening, use a 10-inch mill file and follow the bevel already on the blade. An angle grinder is useful when the edge is badly dull or nicked and needs faster material removal, but it is easier to take off too much steel or overheat the edge. If you grind, finish with a file.
File vs. grinder: which should you use?
| Choice | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 10-inch mill file | Routine touch-ups and maintaining the existing bevel | Slower, controlled removal; can leave a smooth working edge |
| Angle or bench grinder | A badly dull or damaged edge that needs faster material removal | Works faster with less manual effort, but can remove too much material or overheat the steel; refine the edge with a file afterward |

Wisconsin Extension describes a 10-inch mill file as the most commonly used tool for sharpening shovels and hoes, and Oregon State recommends an 8- to 10-inch mill file for larger blades such as shovels. Wisconsin Extension and Oregon State Extension

Yes. A mill file is a reliable choice for ordinary edge maintenance because it gives you control and helps preserve the blade’s existing shape. Use a 10-inch file, or an 8- to 10-inch file suitable for a larger blade. Files cut on the forward stroke, so press in a controlled stroke along the bevel and ease off as you draw the file back. Is an angle grinder better for sharpening a shovel?
Not for every sharpening job. Kansas State Research and Extension recommends an electric grinder when repairing a dull or damaged blade because it removes material faster and takes less manual effort. That speed also makes it easier to remove too much steel. Use light passes, keep the edge from overheating, and refine the ground edge with a flat mill file. Kansas State Research and Extension
What angle should I use?
Follow the visible factory bevel rather than making a new angle or sharpening both faces. For a shovel without a clear bevel, about 45 degrees is a useful reference: UF/IFAS says most shovels need about that angle and warns that a thinner edge will be sharper but less durable. - Size: Overall length: 9.3 inch (235mm); file length: 6 inch (150mm); file width: 1.1 inch (28mm). Perfect for sharpening pruning saws, garden tools, shovels, hoes, knives, axes, and machetes.
- The feather-shaped design makes it easy to reach into the gaps between saw teeth for quick, precise sharpening and edge restoration. A must-have for woodworkers and anyone who regularly uses saws or similar tools.
- The rectangular file surface offers a larger contact area for faster sharpening, improving cutting efficiency.
- An adjustment groove at the end of the file helps correct misaligned saw teeth, making it easy to maintain tool precision.
- Easy to use—no oil or water needed. Just dry sharpen your garden tools quickly and efficiently.
Sharpen only the beveled face to maintain the intended edge. Labels such as “inside,” “top,” or “soil-facing” can be confusing because shovel designs differ; identify the sloping factory-ground face on your own blade. After filing, use a light pass on the flat reverse face to remove the burr rather than forming a second bevel. UC ANR and Wisconsin Extension

- Inspect and clean the edge. Brush off dirt and rust. Look for a rolled or folded edge, nicks, or obvious dullness; a shovel needs a working edge, not a razor edge. UF/IFAS and UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County
- Secure the shovel. Clamp the head in a vise if possible so it cannot shift. Wear safety glasses and gloves, and position your hands so file strokes move away from your body. UC ANR and Oregon State Extension
- Find the existing bevel. Hold the file to match its slope. If no bevel is visible, use about 45 degrees as a starting reference for a shovel. UF/IFAS
- File evenly. Make long, controlled forward strokes along the beveled face, working across the edge rather than repeatedly concentrating on one spot. Stop when the edge is continuous and clean; do not thin the blade in pursuit of razor sharpness. Wisconsin Extension and UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County
- Remove the burr. Make a light pass with a file, stone, or sandpaper on the reverse face to clear the thin ridge of metal raised by sharpening. UF/IFAS
- Clean and protect the blade. Wipe away filings and debris, dry the blade, and apply a thin film of oil to help protect it from rust. UC ANR
Safety when using a grinder
Secure the shovel before grinding. Wear eye and hearing protection, and use light passes so the steel does not overheat. Keep the work controlled: a grinder removes metal quickly, so check the edge as you go. After grinding, use a flat mill file to refine the rougher edge. Kansas State’s garden-tool guidance covers grinder use, protective equipment, overheating, and file finishing. Kansas State Research and Extension

When the shovel does not need sharpening
Do not sharpen simply to make the blade look polished. If it still enters soil effectively and has no rolled edge or troublesome nicks, leave it alone. Shovel edges do not need to be razor sharp; removing folded metal and maintaining a usable bevel is the goal. UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County
