If Android detects your SD card, open it in your file manager and approve the system access prompt. If Android does not list the card under Storage, the problem is card detection—not the file manager’s permission. The exact labels vary by Android version, device maker, and app.
First check whether Android detects the SD card
- Open Settings and look under Storage. Find the SD card in the storage list. On some devices, the initial setup notification also offers a route to card settings; names and locations differ by manufacturer. See Google’s SD card setup guidance.
- If the card is listed, continue to the file manager. Detection means Android sees the card; the app may still need authorization to browse it.
- If it is not listed, troubleshoot detection separately. Check that the card is seated correctly and consult the device maker’s guidance for compatibility and card condition. Changing a file manager’s permissions will not make an undetected card appear.
Give the file manager access to an eligible folder
- Open the file manager and choose its storage, browse, or SD card option.
- When Android opens a system directory picker, navigate to the SD card and select an allowed folder. Confirm the selection using the button shown on your device; its label varies.
- Return to the file manager and open the selected folder. The grant covers that folder and its descendants, not every location on the card. Android’s Storage Access Framework documentation explains this user-selected access model.
What to do if the card root is unavailable
On Android 11 and later, the system picker restricts apps from requesting the root of an SD-card volume that the device manufacturer considers reliable. If the root cannot be selected, try an eligible subfolder instead; do not expect the picker to grant the file manager unrestricted access to the whole card. Android also limits selection of protected Android/data and Android/obb locations. These rules are documented in Android’s Android 11 storage changes.

Check the app’s permission settings if it asks you to
If the file manager directs you to Settings, open the app’s permission page and review the available Files and media permission. Android 11 documentation describes a route at Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Files and media; your device may use different labels or menus. A Files and media permission and a folder grant through the system picker are distinct mechanisms: granting the former does not remove the picker’s directory limits.

Why “allow storage” may not unlock the whole card
Android’s storage permissions depend on the app’s purpose and target version. For Android 10 and later, apps targeting API 29 or higher use scoped storage by default. For apps targeting Android 11 or later, WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE does not provide additional storage access. Broad “All files access” is a special permission for particular use cases, not a routine fix to seek or a way to bypass platform restrictions. Portable versus internal SD card storage

Android Help distinguishes these modes in its SD card setup instructions. The card’s mode can affect how it is used, but reformatting is not a permission fix.
Do not format the card just to fix file-manager access
Formatting permanently deletes the card’s data. Back it up before formatting, and proceed only if you intend to erase or reconfigure it—not because one app cannot browse it. Android Help gives the same warning in its SD card guidance.

If access still fails, narrow down the cause
- Android does not show the card in Storage: investigate seating, compatibility, or card condition with the device maker; permissions are not the issue yet.
- Android shows the card, but the file manager does not: use the app’s browse option and complete the system picker flow for an allowed folder.
- The picker rejects the card root: try an eligible subfolder, keeping Android 11-and-later restrictions in mind.
- The app requests a Settings permission: inspect that file manager’s permission page, while remembering that the permission does not override folder-grant limits.
For device-specific help, identify the phone or tablet model, Android version, whether the card is portable or internal storage, and the file-manager app. Menus and permitted selections depend on those details.
