Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers of ₹5,285.37 crore in Indian equities on 15 October 2026, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers of ₹3,319.39 crore. The figures are provisional exchange data for the Indian cash market, aggregated across the NSE, BSE and MSEI. The session still produced a strong benchmark rally: the Sensex gained 1,533.72 points and the Nifty 50 rose 374.65 points.

What FIIs and DIIs traded on October 15

A positive net figure means an investor group bought more value than it sold during the session. A negative figure means sales exceeded purchases. On 15 October, FIIs sold substantially more than they bought, while DIIs bought more than they sold.

Investor group Gross purchases Gross sales Net flow
FIIs ₹12,736 crore ₹18,021 crore Net sale of ₹5,285.37 crore
DIIs ₹19,439 crore ₹16,119 crore Net purchase of ₹3,319.39 crore

The net FII figure is the difference between ₹12,736 crore of gross purchases and ₹18,021 crore of gross sales. The DII net purchase similarly reflects ₹19,439 crore bought minus ₹16,119 crore sold. Rounding in the gross figures means the displayed arithmetic may not reproduce every decimal in the reported net totals.

FII selling continued for a 15th session

Moneycontrol described the October 15 FII outflow as the 15th consecutive session of net selling. That streak puts the single-day number in a longer sequence rather than making it an isolated transaction. The available flow report records what was bought and sold; it does not establish the reason for the selling, whether it reflected portfolio rebalancing, currency considerations, risk management or another factor.

DIIs provided a domestic counterweight

DIIs—including India-based institutional investors represented in the exchange data—bought ₹3,319.39 crore more than they sold. Their net buying offset part of the foreign outflow, but not all of it: the two groups together still represented a net institutional outflow of about ₹1,965.98 crore for the day when the reported figures are combined.

That combined calculation is a description of these two categories only. It is not a complete account of every market participant or of activity in derivatives, debt, currencies or other segments.

How the benchmarks performed despite foreign selling

The market rose sharply during the same session. The Sensex closed at 74,315.61, up 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%. The Nifty 50 gained 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to finish at 22,997.35.

Index Close Change Percentage change
Sensex 74,315.61 +1,533.72 points +2.11%
Nifty 50 22,997.35 +374.65 points +1.66%

The positive index performance shows that an FII–DII flow imbalance did not prevent a broad benchmark rally on 15 October. It does not, by itself, prove that DII buying caused the rise, that FII selling had no effect, or that the same relationship will hold in a later session. Index prices also reflect company-specific news, other investors, sector weights and transactions outside the summarized cash-market categories.

What “provisional exchange data” means

The published values are provisional figures for the Indian cash market, aggregated from the NSE, BSE and MSEI. The daily cash-market table uses a positive sign when purchases exceed sales. A related SEBI trends report is compiled from custodian submissions dated 15 October 2026 and covers trades conducted up to the previous trading day. Provisional data can be revised as reporting is reconciled, so these numbers should not be treated as an immutable final record.

How to read the next update

Check the streak, not only one day

Whether FII selling continues or stops can matter more for interpreting the trend than the October 15 total alone. A single session cannot establish a durable direction for foreign participation.

Separate gross activity from net activity

Net selling does not mean FIIs were inactive. They purchased ₹12,736 crore while selling ₹18,021 crore. Gross turnover shows the scale of repositioning that the net number conceals.

Put flows beside prices

Compare each subsequent flow release with Sensex and Nifty returns, sector performance and market breadth. The October 15 rally is a reminder that price movement and one category’s net flow can diverge.

Confirm whether the data remain provisional

Use the status and coverage of each release before making a time-series comparison. Mixing provisional cash-market figures with revised data or with other market segments can create a misleading trend.

What this report does—and does not—tell investors

  • It establishes the reported direction and size of FII and DII cash-equity flows for 15 October 2026.
  • It shows that FIIs were reported as net sellers for a 15th straight session in Moneycontrol’s account.
  • It records a strong Sensex and Nifty 50 gain on the same day.
  • It does not identify the motivation behind either group’s trades.
  • It does not predict the next index move or substitute for company, valuation and risk analysis.
