What Figure’s AI agent does
Figure Technology Solutions announced the Sierra partnership on September 10, 2026, describing the deployment as Horizon’s first use in the United States. Figure trained the agent and integrated it natively into its loan origination system. It is intended to help lenders follow up with home-equity applicants whose applications have stalled rather than to answer general consumer questions.

The agent contacts applicants over voice and SMS and can continue outreach autonomously over multiple days. Figure says it helps with routine points of friction such as obtaining permission for a credit check, verifying identity, and linking a bank account. Once those steps are addressed, the applicant is transferred to a loan officer to finalize the loan. The announcement does not detail the agent’s exact scripts, consent controls, escalation triggers, or how it handles borrowers who do not want automated contact. Figure’s announcement.

Why abandoned HELOC applications matter
A home equity line of credit, or HELOC, lets a homeowner borrow against available home equity. An application can stall before approval or funding when a borrower does not complete a required step. Figure’s examples—credit-check permission, identity verification, and bank-account linking—show the kind of procedural friction the agent is meant to address.

Figure cited an average HELOC closing pull-through rate of 49% in 2024, attributing the figure to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s 2025 Home Equity Lending Study. Pull-through is a market context figure, not a result from Figure’s agent pilot; the announcement cites the study but does not reproduce its underlying analysis. Figure also cited $271 billion in nationwide HELOC volume in 2025 and an estimated $35 trillion in U.S. homeowner equity. What Figure reported from its pilot
Figure said its analysis of performance data from July 2026 found higher progression through individual friction stages among applicants who interacted with the agent than among those who did not. It also reported more funded loan volume among borrowers engaging with the agent, and a higher funded-loan conversion rate when the agent worked alongside loan officers. These are results Figure reported on September 10, 2026, not independently validated findings in the announcement.

The release does not give sample sizes, a detailed methodology, how comparison groups were formed, or confidence intervals. It therefore does not establish that the agent caused the reported differences, nor does it show how the results would transfer to another lender, loan product, or applicant population. Availability and what lenders should verify
Figure said it planned to make the integration available to its network partners “over the coming months.” That describes the plan stated in the September 10, 2026 release, not confirmation that partner access is currently open. Lenders interested in deployment should check directly with Figure for present availability and commercial terms; the announcement provides no pricing, referral, reseller, or affiliate terms.

For a lender evaluating this type of system, the announcement leaves several practical questions open:
- Which borrower steps the agent can complete, and which require a person.
- How voice and SMS outreach is authorized, timed, and stopped when a borrower declines or does not respond.
- How the system records activity in the loan origination system and escalates cases to a loan officer.
- What deployment, pricing, and partner requirements apply.
- What evidence supports conversion claims, including group definitions, sample sizes, and results at comparable lenders.
What the announcement signals about mortgage AI
The partnership frames AI as a way to carry a loan application through routine follow-up steps while preserving a human role in finalizing the loan. Sierra co-founder Bret Taylor described enterprise AI as moving beyond reactive cost reduction toward revenue-generating work. Figure CEO Michael Tannenbaum characterized the goal as “human-agent synergy” to improve partner revenue outcomes. Those statements express the companies’ rationale; the reported pilot data remain company-reported and do not by themselves demonstrate a general business case for lenders.
