Single elimination is the fastest and easiest to run, but one set loss ends a player’s tournament. Double elimination gives every player a second life: a first loss sends them to the losers bracket, while a second loss eliminates them. Round robin schedules every participant against every other participant in the group, guaranteeing more matches but creating a schedule that grows quickly as the group gets larger.
Choose by weighing entrant count, available stations, total event time, the experience you want after a loss, seeding, and clearly published tie-break rules. Many events combine a round-robin or other preliminary phase with a double-elimination finals bracket.

The three formats at a glance
| Decision point | Single elimination | Double elimination | Round robin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Losses before elimination | One | Two set losses | Players normally remain in the group; standings and advancement rules decide what happens next |
| Match volume | Lowest for a fixed field | Higher than single elimination, with a possible grand-finals reset | Every pairing is played in the group, so volume rises quickly with group size |
| After a loss | The player’s tournament run normally ends | The player moves from the winners bracket to a losers-bracket position | The player continues through the remaining group pairings |
| Operational work | One knockout bracket and a simple schedule | Two bracket paths, losers rounds, and time for a possible reset | Every pairing must be scheduled, results recorded, and ties resolved |
| Best fit | Short events, large fields, limited stations, or a quick final | Open brackets where one loss should not end a run and the schedule can support extra rounds | Small groups, leagues, or preliminary stages that prioritize multiple guaranteed matches |
These are common mechanics, not a universal rulebook. A game, circuit, or local organizer can define a different set length, seeding method, scoring system, or advancement rule.

One loss ends the bracket run
Players are placed in a knockout bracket. Winners advance; the loser of each set is removed from that bracket. The final remaining player is champion. A player who loses in the opening round normally has no further bracket match unless the event adds a separate consolation or placement phase.

Why organizers use it
Single elimination uses the fewest rounds of the three formats for the same entrant field. That makes it practical when an event has many entrants relative to its stations, a hard venue closing time, or a need to reach a finals presentation quickly. Bracket administration is also straightforward: publish the bracket, run each round, and advance the winner.
The trade-off for players
A bad matchup, an early mistake, or an upset can end a strong player’s day immediately. Seeding matters because a high seed can otherwise meet another strong player unusually early, while an unseeded player may face a difficult first-round draw. If you use this format, state plainly that one set loss eliminates a competitor.
How double elimination works
Winners and losers brackets
Under the definition used by Evo’s official rules, a player remains in the tournament until losing two sets. Everyone starts in the winners bracket. The first set loss transfers that player to a designated position in the losers bracket; a second set loss eliminates them. Winners-bracket matches continue to send their losers into the appropriate losers-bracket round, while winners stay on the winners side.

The grand-final reset
The last winners-bracket player meets the last losers-bracket player in the grand final. The winners-bracket finalist has not yet lost a set in the tournament, while the losers-bracket finalist has already lost once. If the losers-bracket player wins the first grand-final set, Evo runs a second set, called the grand-finals reset, to determine the champion. If the winners-bracket finalist wins that first set, the tournament ends there. Therefore, the final can contain one or two sets.

What the second chance does and does not mean
Double elimination reduces the impact of one loss, but it does not guarantee a rematch or a match against every entrant. Some opponents meet once, some meet again later, and many never face each other. The exact path depends on bracket size, results, and the bracket’s placement rules. Extra losers rounds and the possible reset also require more schedule capacity and closer bracket management than single elimination.
How round robin works
Every pairing in the group
In a single round robin, each participant plays every other participant in the group once. If a group has n participants, the number of pairings is n(n−1)/2. The formula counts each unique pair without counting the same matchup twice.
- Four participants produce 4×3÷2 = 6 pairings.
- Six participants produce 6×5÷2 = 15 pairings.
- Eight participants produce 8×7÷2 = 28 pairings.
Those figures are the arithmetic result of the format, not a claim about an average event. Doubling the group does not merely double the work: the number of pairings grows quadratically.
Standings, points, and ties
A round robin needs a published standings system before play begins. The rules must say how a win, loss, game score, or match score contributes to the table; how many players advance; and what happens when competitors finish level. Tie-breaks can use measures such as head-to-head results, game differential, or an additional playoff, but the organizer must name the actual procedure rather than leaving it to an on-the-day decision.

Why players often prefer it
A player who loses early still has the rest of the group schedule. That gives each entrant a predictable number of matches and produces more information about relative strength than a single knockout game. The price is a longer event, more station time, and a larger administrative burden as the group grows.
Which format should an organizer choose?
Choose single elimination when time is the hard constraint
- The entrant field is large compared with the number of stations.
- The venue has a strict end time.
- You need the smallest practical bracket and a quick championship match.
- Players understand that one set loss ends their run.
Use careful seeding and publish whether there will be any separate placement matches. Without an additional phase, first-round losers should not expect another bracket opportunity.
Choose double elimination when one loss should not define the day
- The event can accommodate extra rounds and a possible two-set grand final.
- You want an open-bracket experience in which a player can recover from one poor set.
- Staff can track winners-bracket and losers-bracket positions accurately.
- The schedule has enough slack for losers rounds, which often become the pacing constraint.
Explain in advance that the second chance is one additional bracket life, not a promise that every pair of players will meet twice.

Choose round robin for small groups and guaranteed play
- Each competitor should receive several scheduled matches.
- The group is small enough that all pairings fit the available stations and time.
- You can publish points, advancement places, and tie-breaks before registration closes.
- The event is a league, a local pool, or a preliminary stage feeding a later bracket.
Set the group size from the schedule backward. More players in one group create disproportionately more pairings, so splitting a large field into smaller groups can be more practical than running one giant round robin.

Planning stations, time, and administration
Start with the schedule, not the bracket graphic
List the number of entrants, stations, playable hours, expected set length, breaks, and any broadcast or ceremony requirements. Single elimination has the lightest match load. Double elimination adds losers-bracket rounds and may add a reset. Round robin requires every pairing in each group, so its schedule is usually the first thing to exceed available capacity.
Keep bracket and station assignments synchronized
For single elimination, a single queue of rounds is usually enough. Double elimination needs separate labels for winners and losers paths so that a player is never advanced from the wrong side. Round robin needs a pairing list and a standings sheet that are updated after every result. Publish a visible method for calling matches and handling a player who is not present when called.
Define the rules that affect standings
Before the first match, state the set format, game count, scoring, acceptable controllers and hardware, side selection, pause handling, disconnections, and tie-break order. A bracket format cannot resolve an undefined tie-break. If a circuit rulebook supplies those details, use that rulebook and identify its scope and edition.

Evo: double elimination with event-specific set lengths
Evo’s official rules state that its tournaments use double elimination. Its large events are organized into smaller double-elimination pools and phases, with pools of 16–32 players progressing toward a combined bracket and top-six finals. Evo’s general set length is best two of three games, while sets deciding top-three placements are best three of five. Those numbers describe Evo’s rules as accessed in 2026; they are not a universal fighting-game standard and can change by edition.
Best Value
Evo also requires players to provide their own controller. That is an event participation requirement, not a reason to choose one bracket format over another.
TEKKEN World Tour: round-robin groups feeding a bracket
The official TEKKEN World Tour rules use round-robin group matches, with players advancing to a final bracket. The rules also specify tie-break mechanisms for tied leaderboard points. Those procedures belong to that competition; another organizer should not assume that the same points or tie-break order applies to its own round robin.
2XKO EU Community Series 2026: different phases can use different formats
The 2XKO EU Community Series 2026 rulebook calls double elimination the standard bracket format and requires the final phase to resolve through double elimination. It allows community-national organizers to request permission for alternative preliminary formats, including round-robin pools. This is a practical model for combining a high-volume preliminary phase with a manageable finals bracket, provided the governing rulebook permits the change.
Answering the common double-elimination question
“Does everyone play everyone at least twice in a double-elimination format?” No. Double elimination describes how many set losses a player can absorb before elimination, not how often each pair of players meets. A player is eliminated after a second set loss; the bracket determines which opponents appear on that player’s route. Two players may meet once, meet again after one has moved through the losers bracket, or never meet at all. A public discussion of this question appears in the r/Fighters community, but the bracket’s published rules—not an informal explanation—control a specific event.
A practical format-selection checklist
- Count entrants and divide them into realistic station capacity for the hours available.
- Choose whether one loss should end a player’s event, permit one recovery path, or leave everyone in a group schedule.
- Calculate round-robin pairings with n(n−1)/2 for each proposed group size.
- Decide the set length and whether later rounds use a different game count.
- Publish seeding, byes, station assignments, check-in deadlines, and what happens after a no-show.
- For round robin, publish points, advancement places, and the complete tie-break order before play.
- For double elimination, label winners and losers paths clearly and reserve time for a grand-finals reset.
- Check the current game, circuit, regional, and event rules before announcing the format. A governing rulebook may require double elimination or permit alternatives only in preliminary phases.
What the formats can and cannot tell you about fairness
These structures distribute opportunities differently. Single elimination rewards immediate performance and minimizes schedule length. Double elimination gives one recovery route but still depends on bracket placement and the sequence of results. Round robin gives the most guaranteed group play, while its standings can depend heavily on the published scoring and tie-break system. There is no broad comparative study in the available evidence that establishes a universal winner for fairness, average event length, or player satisfaction. Those outcomes depend on the game, field, seeding, set length, stations, and rulebook.
For that reason, describe the exact event rather than making a format-wide promise. State the number of phases, the group or bracket size, the set rules, and the advancement procedure so players know what a loss means before they enter.
