Field hockey is played on a marked field with a ball; ice hockey is played on an ice rink with a puck. Field hockey players move on foot, while ice hockey players skate. The sports share the basic aim of using a stick to score, but their surfaces, equipment, movement and competition rules are different.
How the playing surfaces differ
Field hockey is played on a marked field. International Hockey Federation (FIH) facilities guidance published in 2024 gives the field of play—the area inside the markings—as 91.40 m by 55.00 m. That measurement excludes the surrounding run-off area. FIH discusses run-offs separately, recommends larger safety margins where possible and requires them for higher-level international competition; the space around a field can therefore differ.

Ice hockey is played on an ice surface called a rink. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) 2026/27 rulebook specifies a rink 60 m long and 26–30 m wide for IIHF-governed competitions. It also sets out rink boards and markings. Those specifications apply to IIHF competition; recreational leagues and other competitions may use their own governing rules.
Ball, puck and movement
| Feature | Field hockey | Ice hockey |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Marked field | Ice rink |
| Game object | Ball | Puck |
| How players move | Run on the field | Skate on blades |
| Main playing equipment | Field hockey stick and ball | Ice hockey stick and puck |
A field hockey ball and an ice hockey puck are made for different surfaces and styles of play; they are not interchangeable. Likewise, field hockey sticks and ice hockey sticks are sport-specific. Ice hockey players wear skates, while field hockey is played on foot.

How the rules and style of play differ
Field hockey
FIH rules include free hits and restrictions on how play is restarted near the attacking circle. In the cited rules context, players must stay five metres from a free hit, and an attacking free hit in the 23-metre area is subject to restrictions on playing the ball into the circle. The details depend on the applicable rules and situation, so players should consult the current rules for their competition.
An FIH announcement about changes effective in January 2019 described a four-quarter match format and options for goalkeeper equipment. It is useful background on those changes, but it is not a complete current rulebook; match format and equipment requirements should be checked against current competition rules.

Ice hockey
Ice hockey uses rink markings including the centre and blue lines, face-off spots and zones. IIHF explanatory material covers offside, icing and penalties, as well as the sport’s physical play. Contact rules—including when body checking is permitted and what limits apply—are set by the governing competition and should not be assumed to be identical across leagues or age groups.

Equipment a beginner should expect
Field hockey
- Stick: Choose a field hockey stick suited to the player’s age, level and intended use.
- Ball: Use a field hockey ball appropriate for the activity and competition. An approved ball is required by the cited Commonwealth Games event requirements, a competition-specific requirement rather than a universal purchasing rule.
- Protective equipment: Check the player’s league or governing body’s requirements, which can depend on level and role.
Ice hockey
- Stick and puck: Both are specific to ice hockey.
- Skates: Players need ice hockey skates with blades to move on the rink.
- Protective gear: IIHF material describes protective equipment used in the sport. The exact required equipment can vary by competition, age and level, so confirm the applicable rules before playing.
For either sport, check sizing and competition requirements before buying. The appropriate equipment depends on the player and the rules they will play under; no product comparison or testing is established here.

The most immediate practical difference is the setting: field hockey requires access to a suitable field, while ice hockey requires rink access and skating equipment. Which option is easier or less expensive locally depends on facilities, programs and equipment availability in your area; those factors cannot be ranked universally. If you are joining a club or school team, ask it which rules apply and what equipment it provides or requires before purchasing.
