Each has a primary job, but players move across the pitch as possession changes: defenders can join an attack, midfielders help in both directions, and forwards can track back. A position is best understood as a responsibility, not a permanent spot.
Which positions are there in outdoor field hockey?
This guide covers outdoor 11-a-side hockey. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) treats indoor hockey, Hockey5s, beach hockey and para hockey as distinct formats, with their own rules. For rule questions, check the relevant format’s current rules; the FIH’s official documents page says the outdoor Rules of Hockey were published and took effect in March 2026: FIH Rules of Hockey and official documents.

The four basic groups are goalkeeper, defenders (also called backs), midfielders (often called middies) and forwards (also called attackers or strikers). Some team shapes include a sweeper or cover player, but that is an optional tactical role rather than a required fifth group.

| Position | Primary responsibility | In attack | In defense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Prevent opponents from scoring and coordinate the defense of the goal. | Supports the team from the goal area; the introductory role sources do not set out detailed keeper distribution or movement technique. | Protects the goal and coordinates defenders. |
| Defenders (backs) | Protect the goalkeeper and stop opposing forwards reaching scoring positions. | Help move the ball to midfielders and forwards and may support attacking play. | Guard dangerous space and disrupt the opposition’s route to goal. |
| Midfielders (middies) | Link the defensive and attacking phases. | Help advance the ball toward forwards and the opponent’s side of the pitch. | Contribute to defense and form an initial line of pressure. |
| Forwards (attackers or strikers) | Advance play toward the opponent’s goal and convert chances into goals. | Lead the attack and work with teammates to finish opportunities. | Can retreat to help defend when the play requires it. |
These are customary jobs, not exclusive duties. USA Field Hockey’s Field Hockey Basics guide describes the four main roles, while the MHSAA 2025 field hockey program offers a complementary overview and formation example.

Goalkeeper
The goalkeeper’s central task is to prevent goals and organize the defense in front of the goal. It is a specialized defensive role. A broad beginner description is not a substitute for coaching on goalkeeper technique, movement rules or protective equipment requirements.
Defenders or backs
Defenders shield the goal by limiting opponents’ access to dangerous scoring positions. Their job does not end at the defensive line: once their team wins or controls the ball, they can help carry or pass possession toward midfielders and forwards. They may also support an attack and become a scoring threat.

Midfielders or middies
Midfielders connect the team’s defensive and attacking work. They can help apply the first line of defense, contest or retain possession, then move the ball forward to attackers. Because they work in both phases, a midfielder’s contribution is not defined only by how far upfield they stand.
Forwards, attackers or strikers
Forwards are the most attack-oriented group. They push play toward the opponent’s goal and try to turn chances created with teammates into goals. When the other team has the ball, forwards may retreat and assist the defense rather than wait permanently near the opposing goal.

Sweeper or cover
Some formations place a sweeper or cover player behind or in front of the main defensive line, with a primarily defensive responsibility. Treat it as a coach’s tactical choice: the cited beginner material presents it as an option, not a role every team must use.

A formation describes how a coach arranges role groups, not a legally fixed pattern or a promise that players will remain in their lanes. USA Field Hockey gives 4-3-3, 3-4-3 and 3-3-3-1 as examples; the last includes a defensive sweeper. The MHSAA program also illustrates a 3-3-3-1 shape. These are examples, and a coach may choose a different arrangement to suit the players and the opponent.

- BEGINNER FIELD HOCKEY STICK: Available in shorter lengths for younger players
- EASY TO LEARN: Wooden construction makes this stick very forgiving, perfect for learning new skills.
- PRACTICE SKILLS: The X-Ray is the perfect stick for the starting field hockey player to practice their skills witih
- REDUCED FATIGUE: Flexibility of the multi-layer wood construction reduces fatigue in the hands and arms of beginning players
- DURABLE GRIP: The durable black hand grip is easy to hold and won't get as dirty over time.
Formation numbers usually describe the outfield lines in sequence, with the goalkeeper understood separately. For example, a 4-3-3 shape has four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. A 3-3-3-1 shape has three players in each of three lines plus one additional player; in the USA Field Hockey example, that additional player is a defensive sweeper. The label alone does not explain every assignment or where players will be during a transition.

Why do players leave their usual areas?
Possession changes what the team needs. When a team wins the ball, defenders may join the build-up, midfielders connect passes and forwards look for attacking opportunities. When possession is lost, midfielders and forwards can help defend while defenders protect the route to goal. Communication and teamwork make those shifts possible.
To follow a match, watch each player’s contribution rather than expecting a fixed location: who is protecting the goal, who is helping win or move the ball, and who is creating or finishing the attack? That makes formations easier to understand without treating the formation label as a rulebook.
Do position names vary?
Common alternatives include backs for defenders, middies for midfielders, and attackers or strikers for forwards. Terminology can vary between teams and regions, so if a coach uses a different label, ask which responsibility it refers to. The underlying role groups remain a more reliable guide than assuming every team uses identical names.
