Choose full fibre (FTTP) when it is available at a competitive total price and you care about upload speed, low latency, consistent performance or long-term capacity. Choose cable when its address-specific plan is materially cheaper, already installed or offers a better combination of speed and terms. Choose fixed wireless when wired broadband is unavailable or you need a faster installation, but verify evening speeds, latency, data limits and the provider’s local reliability first.
No technology wins at every address. The right choice depends on the service you can actually order, not the label on a national advertisement. Check your exact property, then compare the post-promotion price, upload rate, contract, equipment and performance expectations.

What the three connection types mean
The technology describes the link between your home and the provider’s network. It affects potential speed, upload capacity, delay, congestion behavior, installation and resilience, but it does not guarantee a particular plan or household result.

Full fibre, also called fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP), uses optical fibre all the way to the premises. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes FTTP as optical fibre terminating at the end user’s location. Fibre has very high capacity and is generally the strongest option for uploads, latency and consistency.

In FCC 2024 measurement data, the weighted mean advertised residential fibre speed was 586 Mbps. The weighted mean maximum advertised speed in December 2023 was 791 Mbps. Those are market-level advertised figures, not a promise that every address receives those speeds.
Cable (HFC/DOCSIS)
Cable broadband normally uses a hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) network: fibre reaches a neighbourhood node, then coaxial cable carries service over the final segment to homes. Modern DOCSIS networks can deliver very fast downloads, and a cable plan can be the best practical choice where fibre is absent or significantly more expensive.
The FCC reported a weighted mean advertised residential cable speed of 483 Mbps in 2024 and a weighted mean maximum advertised speed of 496 Mbps in December 2023. Upload tiers are often less generous than download tiers, and performance can vary when many homes share capacity on a local node.
Fixed wireless
Fixed wireless uses a receiver or antenna at the property to connect by radio to a nearby tower or mobile network. The FCC’s technology code 71 includes 4G LTE and 5G-NR sold as fixed service. It is different from using a phone’s hotspot: the service is designed for a fixed location, with provider-supplied access equipment and a planned coverage area.
Radio conditions, spectrum, tower distance, obstructions and evening demand all affect the result. A strong 5G installation can be useful, especially in places without wired networks, while 4G fixed wireless is more likely to have higher latency, lower speeds and dropouts.
How fibre, cable and fixed wireless compare
| Factor | Full fibre (FTTP) | Cable (HFC/DOCSIS) | Fixed wireless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical path | Optical fibre to the premises | Fibre to a node, coaxial cable to the home | Radio link from a home receiver to a tower or mobile network |
| Advertised speed evidence | FCC 2024 weighted mean advertised residential speed: 586 Mbps; weighted mean maximum in December 2023: 791 Mbps | FCC 2024 weighted mean advertised residential speed: 483 Mbps; weighted mean maximum in December 2023: 496 Mbps | Varies by spectrum, tower, provider and location; no single national figure establishes household performance |
| Upload potential | Usually the strongest option; symmetrical or high-upload tiers may be available | Download-focused plans are common; upload tiers vary by provider and network upgrade | Variable; constrained by radio capacity and local demand |
| Latency and consistency | Generally the safest choice for low delay and stable performance | Can be very good, but local node congestion can affect busy periods | More variable; New Zealand’s Commerce Commission found 4G fixed wireless had the highest latency among measured technologies and more frequent dropouts than fibre |
| Installation | Usually requires a wired drop and an appointment if the property is not connected | May use an existing coaxial connection; a technician may still be required | Can be quicker where a suitable signal exists, but needs a receiver and an installation position with adequate radio conditions |
| Best fit | Heavy simultaneous use, cloud work, creators, gaming and long-term capacity | Good downloads, an existing connection or a materially better local deal | Rural or underserved homes, rapid deployment and locations without practical wired service |
Ofcom’s 2024 technology table recorded average maximum download speeds of 437 Mbit/s for HFC cable and 406 Mbit/s for FTTP full fibre. These are provider-reported maximums, not guaranteed household speeds, and they illustrate why a country-wide technology average should not override an address-level quote.

Is fibre better than cable?
For most households that can obtain both at similar total cost, full fibre is the better technical choice. It normally offers more upload headroom, lower and steadier latency, and a dedicated optical path that avoids the last coaxial segment. Those advantages matter when several people work from home, when a household uploads large media files, or when video calls and interactive applications must remain responsive while someone else is downloading.

A well-run DOCSIS network can deliver excellent downloads and low enough latency for ordinary gaming, streaming and work. Cable may be the sensible choice when the fibre build has not reached the property, when the cable installation is already present, or when the cable plan has a substantially lower post-promotion price. Ask specifically for the upload speed and whether the provider has a history of evening congestion at the address.
When cable is the rational buy
- The cable plan is materially cheaper after the introductory period, not merely during a short promotion.
- It offers enough upload capacity for your actual work and backup schedule.
- The property already has a usable coaxial drop and fibre would involve a lengthy or uncertain build.
- Local users report stable evening performance and the contract has acceptable equipment, data and cancellation terms.
Is 5G or fixed wireless good enough for a home?
It can be, but “5G” is not a performance guarantee. Fixed wireless depends on the radio path and the capacity shared by nearby customers. A provider may deliver a strong result at one house and a weak or inconsistent one a short distance away. 5G service can outperform older 4G fixed wireless, yet local infrastructure, spectrum and tower loading still determine the experience.
The New Zealand Commerce Commission’s 2025 Measuring Broadband New Zealand report found that 4G fixed wireless had the highest latency of the measured technologies, lower and more variable speeds than fibre, and more frequent dropouts. The report also notes that fixed wireless may be the only option in some areas and that 5G results vary by provider and local infrastructure. Treat those findings as a warning about variability, not as proof that every 5G plan is unsuitable.
Questions to ask a fixed-wireless provider
- What download and upload speeds are expected during the evening busy period, not only overnight?
- Is service unlimited, or is there a data allowance, traffic management policy or speed reduction after a threshold?
- What receiver or antenna is required, who installs it, and are there extra mounting or site-survey charges?
- What happens when trees, weather, building materials or network upgrades affect the radio path?
- What are the latency expectations, cancellation rights and equipment-return obligations?
Which connection is best for gaming, calls and remote work?
Competitive and latency-sensitive gaming
Choose full fibre when available at a reasonable price. Its usual combination of low latency, low jitter and consistent uploads gives the greatest margin against lag while another household member is using the connection. Cable can work well for gaming, but node congestion may increase delay at busy times. Fixed wireless can be acceptable for casual play if local tests are stable; 4G fixed wireless is the riskiest option for competitive play because of the higher, more variable latency documented by the New Zealand Commerce Commission.

Video calls need stable two-way performance more than an enormous download headline. Fibre’s upload capacity helps when you send camera video, synchronize files or use cloud desktops while others are online. Cable is adequate when its upload tier is sufficient and the local network remains stable. Fixed wireless should be judged by busy-period consistency and packet loss, not by a peak speed shown in an advertisement.

Streaming and large downloads
All three technologies can support ordinary high-definition streaming when the service is stable. Cable often provides strong download value, while fibre gives more headroom for several simultaneous streams and large game or software downloads. Fixed wireless may handle streaming well at quiet times but can slow during tower congestion; check the provider’s traffic policy before assuming an unlimited experience.
Cloud backups and content creation
Uploads dominate this use case. Full fibre is usually the clear first choice because high upload tiers reduce the time needed to send video, photographs, project files and backups. Cable can be workable for occasional uploads, but compare the upstream rate rather than choosing on download speed alone. Fixed wireless may become a bottleneck when large uploads coincide with household use.
Availability: check the exact address first
Coverage claims are area-level estimates. A street can have fibre or cable nearby while a particular building lacks a serviceable drop, suitable building access or an available port. Fixed wireless coverage can change with the receiver’s position and line-of-sight conditions.
- Enter the complete property address in the provider’s availability checker, including unit or apartment information where requested.
- Confirm the technology offered at that exact address: FTTP, HFC/DOCSIS, 4G fixed wireless or 5G fixed wireless.
- Record the advertised download and upload rates, installation date, one-time fees, contract term and equipment charges.
- Check an independent map where available. The FCC National Broadband Map allows residential filtering by technology and advertised speed; Ofcom provides property-level broadband information for UK addresses.
- Ask whether the quote is subject to a site survey, construction charge, landlord approval or a signal test.
Availability changes as networks are built and upgraded. Recheck before renewing or moving, particularly if a previous quote was more than a few months old.
Price: compare the bill you will actually pay
A low introductory price can conceal a higher long-term cost. Ofcom’s pricing analysis found that cable list prices tended to be higher than FTTC and full fibre over the period studied, but promoted prices and speed mixes changed the comparison. That finding does not determine the cheapest plan at your address.
| Cost item | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Monthly service price | Promotional period, post-promotion price and any annual or inflation-linked increase |
| Installation | Activation, technician visit, construction, mounting or site-survey fees |
| Equipment | Router, optical network terminal, cable modem or wireless receiver rental and replacement rules |
| Contract | Minimum term, early-termination charge, cancellation notice and relocation policy |
| Usage policy | Data cap, traffic management, fair-use threshold and overage charges |
| Bundles | Whether television, phone or mobile discounts expire independently of broadband |
Calculate the total cost over the full contract, then divide by the number of months. Compare plans with similar upload rates and data policies; a cheaper headline speed is not equivalent if it has a restrictive allowance or much lower upstream capacity.

Installation and reliability trade-offs
Fibre installation
FTTP may require a new drop from the street, an entry point through the building and an indoor termination device. Arrange access to the property and ask where the equipment will be mounted. Apartment residents may need building-owner approval. Once installed, the optical path is not affected by radio interference, although power cuts, damaged outside plant and provider outages can still interrupt service.
Recommended Free Tools
Cable installation
If coaxial service already reaches the property, activation can be straightforward. New builds or disconnected homes may need a technician to run or repair the drop. Cable’s shared-node design means a physical connection can remain intact while speeds or latency worsen at busy times; this is a capacity issue rather than an indoor Wi-Fi fault.
Fixed-wireless installation
The provider normally places a receiver where it can obtain an adequate signal, then connects it to an indoor gateway. Roof, wall or window mounting, power and a clear radio path may be required. Trees, terrain, weather and network load can affect performance. Confirm the return policy if the installed signal fails to meet the provider’s stated expectations.
A practical decision guide
Choose full fibre if
- It is available at your address and the total price is competitive.
- Several people work, study, stream or game at the same time.
- You upload large files, create media, run cloud backups or use latency-sensitive applications.
- You want the greatest capacity headroom for a long contract or future household growth.
Choose cable if
- It is already installed and materially cheaper after promotion.
- The upload tier meets your needs and local evening performance is acceptable.
- Fibre is unavailable, delayed or carries a large construction cost.
Choose fixed wireless if
- Fibre and cable are unavailable or impractical.
- You need service deployed quickly and a provider confirms a strong signal at the property.
- You have checked busy-period speeds, latency, data limits, equipment requirements and cancellation terms.
How to test whether the service meets its promise
Run tests over wired Ethernet to the router when possible; Wi-Fi can hide the access network’s actual performance. Test at different times, especially the evening period when household and tower or node demand is highest. Record download, upload, latency and packet loss, and repeat from the same device and server where practical.
- A large download with a very low upload result may indicate a cable or fixed-wireless tier that is unsuitable for backups and creator workflows.
- Good overnight results followed by poor evening latency suggest congestion rather than a problem with your device.
- Random drops, changing signal readings or weather-related deterioration point toward a fixed-wireless radio-path issue.
- Consistently poor results on Ethernet across all times justify checking the provider’s line, modem or receiver before replacing home Wi-Fi equipment.
Keep the provider’s advertised rate, order confirmation and test records. They make a support case more precise and help distinguish an access-network fault from an overloaded wireless router.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by download speed alone
Two plans with the same download headline can have very different upload rates, latency and data policies. Put upload, busy-period behavior and total cost beside download speed before deciding.
Best Value
Assuming 5G means the same performance everywhere
5G is a radio technology, not a guaranteed speed class. Ask for address-specific expectations and a trial or cancellation remedy where available.
Comparing promotional prices as if they were permanent
Write down the price after the introductory period, equipment rental and any scheduled increases. Use the full-contract average rather than the first bill.
Blaming Wi-Fi for every slowdown
Test with Ethernet before buying a new router. If the wired result is also poor at busy times, changing indoor Wi-Fi hardware will not fix provider-side congestion or a weak wireless access link.

Ignoring installation constraints
Confirm landlord permission, entry routes, mounting locations, appointment windows and construction fees before accepting an order. A technically superior plan may not be immediately installable.
What the published measurements do—and do not—prove
Ofcom reported that 69% of UK homes, or 20.7 million properties, had access to full fibre in 2024, up from 57% in September 2023. It states that full fibre is faster and more reliable than copper and that both full fibre and cable can potentially deliver 1 Gbit/s or more. Access figures describe availability, not the price or quality of every plan.
FCC speed figures are weighted means of advertised residential services, while Ofcom’s maximum-speed table uses provider-reported maximums. Neither set is a guarantee for an individual household. The New Zealand Commerce Commission’s fixed-wireless findings are measured results for that market and period; they establish the risk of variability, not a universal result for every country or 5G provider.
Because coverage, prices, equipment, data policies and network upgrades change by address and over time, make the final choice from a current property-level quote and the service conditions attached to it.
