FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream Keeps Stopping: Troubleshooting Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your FFmpeg stream to YouTube keeps stopping, first find out whether FFmpeg exited or is still running while YouTube receives too little or invalid video. Note the time of the interruption, save FFmpeg’s complete stderr output and command, then compare them with the timestamped health message in YouTube Live Control Room. That evidence points to the right fix; the symptom alone does not identify the cause.

Start by locating where the stream failed

  1. Record the interruption. Note the time, save the exact FFmpeg command and complete stderr output, and capture the corresponding message under the Health Indicator in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube displays a timestamp for each error and keeps it visible while unresolved. YouTube’s live streaming error guide explains the health messages.
  2. Check the local FFmpeg process. If it exited, start with its final error and exit status. If it is still running, check whether it continues reading its input and attempting to produce output.
  3. Compare both timelines. Match FFmpeg’s stderr timestamps to YouTube’s health message. This helps distinguish a local process or input failure from an output/ingestion problem; neither a frozen preview nor the phrase “stream stopped” alone establishes which one occurred.

YouTube marks red health errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Treat the displayed message as the diagnostic clue, not as a generic connection warning.

Use YouTube’s health message to choose the next check

YouTube reports distinct problem categories, including stream format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframe frequency, resolution, and mismatched primary and backup streams. Its Live Streaming API documentation names more specific conditions:

  • videoIngestionStarved: YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. Check the upload path and whether the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate are sustainable.
  • noAudioStream: the ingestion stream has no audio. Check the input’s audio stream and the output mapping and encoding.
  • openGop: the stream has an open GOP where YouTube requires a closed GOP.
  • High or low bitrate, high frame rate, unsupported codec, long GOP, or mismatched backup settings: compare the indicated setting with your FFmpeg output and YouTube’s current guidance.

Do not change several encoder settings at once. Make the correction indicated by the health message, then check whether the message clears and whether the stream remains healthy.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check upload capacity and the bitrate profile

Bitrate is not a universal number: the appropriate recommendation depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, and the connection must sustain the resulting upload. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, choosing a quality reliable for the connection, testing with representative audio and motion before an event, and monitoring health during it. Its current encoder settings and bitrate table separates recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec.

For a concrete example, YouTube’s table accessed 2026-10-03 lists 1080p at 30 fps as H.264 minimum 5 Mbps and recommended 14 Mbps; for AV1/H.265 it lists minimum 4 Mbps and recommended 10 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain the rate. Use the applicable row in the current table rather than treating these examples as universal targets.

  2. Compare the measured upload capacity with the profile you intend to send, allowing headroom for normal variation and other network use.
  3. If upload capacity cannot support the selected profile reliably, lower the resolution or otherwise choose a profile that fits; then test with representative content.

Verify the output format and keyframes

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). Follow the protocol and the exact health error for your setup: YouTube’s error guidance may identify a specific accepted-format issue, including a requirement for H.264 video and AAC audio, so do not assume one codec rule applies to every configuration.

  • Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends CBR. Check that the FFmpeg output is configured accordingly.
  • Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second interval is 60 frames.
  • GOP: YouTube says a closed GOP is optimal for transcoding. If health reports an open or long GOP, inspect the encoder’s GOP/keyframe settings.
  • Frame rate and resolution: Keep both within the chosen encoder profile and within what the upload connection can sustain. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Audio/video tracks: Check that the expected audio and video streams are present and that FFmpeg is mapping the intended input streams.

For streams with primary and backup feeds, YouTube says the settings must match for failover, including resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio settings.

Understand what FFmpeg reconnect options do

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes reconnect options in its HTTP protocol section. For example, reconnect reconnects when disconnected before EOF; reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and reconnects, which can be useful for live or endless streams; and reconnect_on_network_error covers TCP/TLS errors during connection. The documentation also describes selected HTTP-status retry behavior and retry limits.

Those options can matter when FFmpeg reads a live HTTP input. They are not established as a general way to recover a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. Do not add HTTP input reconnect flags expecting them to fix a failed YouTube output. For an output failure, use FFmpeg’s actual output error, YouTube’s health message, and the documentation for the output protocol. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to inspect first Targeted next step
FFmpeg has exited Final stderr lines and process exit status Resolve the error shown there before changing unrelated bitrate or video settings.
FFmpeg is running, but YouTube reports starved video Upload capacity and the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec being sent Test the connection and compare the profile with YouTube’s current table; reduce the profile if the connection cannot sustain it.
YouTube reports no audio Whether the input contains audio and whether the output maps it Correct the input or stream mapping and check the resulting health message.
YouTube reports a format, codec, keyframe, or GOP error The exact health message and corresponding FFmpeg output settings Adjust that setting to YouTube’s applicable guidance; for keyframes, use the 2-second recommendation and do not exceed 4 seconds.
A backup stream fails over incorrectly Whether primary and backup settings match Align resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio settings.
YouTube reports healthy but FFmpeg has an output error FFmpeg’s output-side stderr and the protocol used for publishing Investigate the output protocol error; HTTP input reconnect options are not a universal RTMP/RTMPS output recovery method.

Should you replace hardware?

Not based on this symptom alone. YouTube’s diagnostics and FFmpeg logs may identify a format, network, input, or output issue, but they do not point to a particular replacement product. Consider hardware only if logs or a separate measurement identify a relevant bottleneck.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than diagnose or preserve a live FFmpeg input, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
