First check whether FFmpeg is still producing video after the first file ends. A missing or misplaced loop option is one possibility, but a black screen alone does not identify the cause. Trace the video from the source files, through FFmpeg’s output, to YouTube’s stream health before changing ingest settings or hardware.
Identify where the video stops
Watch FFmpeg across the transition from the first video to the next. Note whether the process exits, keeps running without video, or continues producing video while YouTube shows black. Also note whether audio continues: audio without video points to a different problem from both streams stopping.

- FFmpeg exits: investigate input exhaustion, playlist order, and file paths.
- FFmpeg stays up but video stops: inspect the next input and stream selection or mapping.
- FFmpeg produces video locally but YouTube is black: compare the configured ingest details with YouTube’s stream status and health messages.
- YouTube reports active while viewers see black: keep checking the video content and health signals; an active state alone does not establish that viewers are receiving visible video.
These are diagnostic branches, not confirmed causes. The command, input sequence, logs, and audio behavior are needed to determine the exact repair.
Check looping and real-time pacing
Confirm the intended input repeats
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop option applies to an input. Its value 0 means no loop; -1 means infinite looping. If you intended one source file to repeat, check that the option is attached to that input and that the command you are running includes it. See the FFmpeg documentation.

For a sequence of different videos, do not assume that adding -stream_loop -1 is the correct fix: it is not a universal prescription for multi-file playlists. Check how your command supplies the files and what it does when the first input ends.
Do not confuse pacing with looping
-re reads an input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1); it does not repeat a file that has ended. For prerecorded material sent as a live feed, check separately whether the input repeats and whether it is paced in real time. The applicable options and behavior can depend on your FFmpeg version; consult the documentation for the installed build.

Inspect the playlist and video stream
- Save the evidence. Record the exact command, FFmpeg version or build output, input list or playlist, and a log spanning the transition after video one. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing anything.
- Verify the next source. Check playlist order, filename spelling, quoting, paths, and whether the next file can be opened. Look for an early end or an input that is missing or incompatible.
- Check video in each input. Confirm that every file has the video stream you expect. If only audio continues after the transition, the next input or selected stream may lack video.
- Inspect stream selection and mapping. Confirm that the output includes the intended video stream after the transition. Do not assume stream copy or a particular concat method is valid without knowing the files and command.
- Compare local output with the live result. If practical, inspect or record FFmpeg’s output around the transition. Determine whether it contains visible video before treating YouTube as the source of the failure.
Check YouTube ingest and stream health
If FFmpeg continues producing video, verify the configured YouTube ingest address and stream name, then review the status and health messages in YouTube Studio. The YouTube LiveStreams API describes stream states including active, error, and inactive. Use those states alongside FFmpeg’s output; a black viewer screen alone does not prove ingest has failed.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. Its encoder guidance also recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream and monitoring health messages. As YouTube puts it: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Apply protocol-specific checks only when relevant
First identify the ingest protocol your setup uses. YouTube’s HLS guidance is for HLS, not a generic RTMP workflow: it calls for a media playlist, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and a single encoded stream. Consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements only if you are using HLS.
Test before relying on the rerun
- Run the complete sequence through at least one transition between source videos.
- Check visible movement and audio, not just whether the process remains open.
- Watch the FFmpeg log and YouTube health messages during the test.
- Confirm that the intended video remains present after the transition before leaving the stream unattended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
