For most creators who want to loop several local videos on YouTube Live, OBS is the easier starting point: add a VLC Video source, select the files, and enable Loop Playlist. FFmpeg is better suited to creators comfortable maintaining commands who want a repeatable, scriptable workflow. Neither has an established India-specific advantage; your choice depends more on setup preference, media compatibility, computer, and internet connection.

OBS or FFmpeg: which should you choose?

Decision OBS FFmpeg
Set up a multi-file playlist Use the graphical VLC Video source and select the files. VLC must be installed; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Choose an FFmpeg concat method and configure its command options. The right method depends on the media and whether you need to re-encode.
Best fit Creators who prefer configuring sources and scenes in a graphical application. Creators comfortable building and maintaining command-line workflows.
YouTube ingest YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. Confirm the actual protocol and settings in Live Control Room. Confirm that the output you configure is compatible with the protocol and settings selected in Live Control Room.
Reliability Depends on the computer, files, upload connection, and monitoring. No comparative reliability test is established. Depends on the same factors. No comparative reliability test is established.

This is a choice between graphical setup and command-line control, not a demonstrated difference in streaming performance. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a separate encoder rule for India.

Loop a playlist with OBS

  1. Install VLC. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match its architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, OBS documents a requirement for 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source, then select the local video files you want in the playlist.
  3. Check the order and loop setting. Confirm that the files appear in the intended order and that Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents this option as on by default, but check it rather than assuming.
  4. Test playback in the preview. Confirm the video and audio play as expected and that the playlist moves from one file to the next.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream key and ingest protocol you intend to use. Enter the key in OBS’s stream configuration and check the preview before going live.

If you have only one file, OBS’s Media Source has its own Loop property. That is a single-file option; use VLC Video for a playlist of multiple files. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Build a playlist workflow with FFmpeg

FFmpeg supports more than one way to concatenate media. First determine whether the files have compatible stream parameters and whether avoiding a re-encode matters to you. There is no single command that is right for every playlist.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends this approach when the inputs need to be re-encoded into a consistent output.
  • Consider the concat demuxer when the files are suitable and you want to avoid re-encoding. The FAQ describes it as an option in appropriate cases; compatibility between files matters.

Use the method that fits the files rather than assuming that a command built for one set of videos will work for another. Then configure FFmpeg’s output for the protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room, and verify that YouTube receives the feed before starting the event. FFmpeg’s official FAQ explains the concat options.

Configure and check the YouTube stream

Check channel eligibility and stream key

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Confirm that live streaming is available for your channel, and use the stream key and ingest protocol shown in Live Control Room. Preview the incoming feed and monitor it during the stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and live-streaming tips.

Leave upload-bandwidth headroom

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable; preview and monitor the actual feed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

If you select HLS

Follow YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements: use TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Use supported codecs, and confirm the protocol and settings in Live Control Room. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Its HLS guidance lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output; that does not mean every OBS or FFmpeg configuration is automatically correct for HLS. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Plan for long streams and recordings

Keeping a live feed running and retaining its archive are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If keeping a recording matters, plan a local recording backup or a suitable restart plan rather than relying on an over-12-hour YouTube archive. YouTube also recommends a local archive backup: Archive live streams.

Copyright and rights apply to both methods

Using OBS or FFmpeg does not change your responsibility for the content. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Review the YouTube livestream terms and conditions and make sure you have the necessary rights, including for music.

Common problems and what to check

  • OBS cannot use the VLC Video source: install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist stops after one video: check that you added a VLC Video source for the multi-file playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled. A Media Source’s Loop property applies to an individual file.
  • FFmpeg fails when joining files: check whether the inputs have compatible stream parameters and whether the chosen concat method suits them. Use the concat filter if re-encoding is needed; the concat demuxer is an option only in suitable cases.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: verify the stream key and selected protocol in Live Control Room, and confirm that your encoder output matches that protocol’s requirements. Preview before going live.
  • The stream has interruptions or dropped frames: check the upload connection, total bitrate and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, then monitor the preview and live feed. No published comparison here establishes that either encoder is inherently more reliable.
  • A very long stream has no archive: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording if the archive is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the playlist live without leaving a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, recovers automatically if YouTube drops the stream, and streams your uploads as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card.
