FFmpeg vs OBS for a Prerecorded YouTube Live Loop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people looping one prerecorded video on a computer, OBS is the easier place to start: add the file as a Media Source and turn on its Loop option. Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable configuring command-line input, media handling and output. If the stream should run without keeping your everyday computer on, consider running FFmpeg on a VPS or using a hosted service instead. These are workflow recommendations, not a measured ranking of uptime.

How the options differ

Option Best fit What it offers What you must manage
OBS Media Source Someone who prefers a graphical interface or may combine the video with other scenes and sources. A local media source with a Loop control, plus playback and hardware-decoding options. The computer and OBS session must remain available. No comparative reliability test establishes how it performs against FFmpeg.
FFmpeg on a local computer Someone comfortable configuring command-line media input and output. Explicit control over reading, filtering or transcoding media, and sending it to a chosen output. You must configure options to suit the file, encoding and destination; there is no universally reliable command for every setup.
FFmpeg on a VPS Someone who wants the process on a remote server and can administer it. Moves the process off the everyday computer. You select and maintain hosting. Actual cost and operational reliability depend on the host and configuration; the reviewed material does not establish a general figure.
Hosted cloud service Someone who would rather delegate hosting and operation. A provider runs the looping workflow in the cloud. Check the service’s current features, terms and price. Provider descriptions are not independent uptime or cost studies.

The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes the source controls; its page was published January 11, 2022. FFmpeg’s maintained documentation describes its input-and-output model and calls FFmpeg “a universal media converter.” Option behavior can vary by FFmpeg build.

Loop a video with OBS

  1. Create or choose a scene. In OBS, select a scene for the broadcast. Add other sources only if you need them; a one-file loop can use a single media source.
  2. Add the video. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Media Source, create a source, and select the local video file in its properties.
  3. Enable looping. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS documents this option as off by default; when enabled, the file plays again after playback completes.
  4. Choose relevant playback options. Restart playback when source becomes active restarts the clip when the source becomes active. Show nothing when playback ends hides the source after the file finishes; for a continuous loop, enable Loop so playback repeats instead of ending. Use hardware decoding when available lets OBS use available hardware decoding for the source.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast. Use the current stream setup and ingest details shown in YouTube Studio. The reviewed sources do not verify YouTube’s current live eligibility, ingest requirements or policies, so consult current official YouTube guidance before going live.
  6. Check the transition. Watch the end of one playback and the beginning of the next, and confirm the scene and audio behave as intended. Leave OBS and the computer running while you want the local stream to continue.

When OBS is a good fit

OBS is a practical choice when you want a visible scene-based setup and are happy to keep the streaming computer available. Its graphical controls make the loop setting straightforward to inspect and change.

When FFmpeg makes more sense

FFmpeg suits a terminal-based workflow where you want to configure how media is read, processed and sent to an output. Its flexibility also means the correct setup depends on details such as the file’s audio and video streams, whether it needs transcoding, the FFmpeg build, and the destination’s current ingest requirements.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Think through the command before running it

  1. Inspect the input. Confirm the file path and determine which audio and video streams it contains.
  2. Choose how playback repeats. Configure the input and loop behavior for the file and your intended duration. The appropriate options depend on the input and FFmpeg build.
  3. Set media handling. Decide whether the existing streams can be sent as-is or need filtering or transcoding, and configure output encoding accordingly.
  4. Choose the destination and output. Set the output for the ingest destination and current YouTube requirements. Get the ingest URL and stream key from the current YouTube Studio workflow; do not reuse or publish the key.
  5. Validate the setup. Check the command against the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build and the file’s codecs, then monitor a test before relying on it for a long session.

FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains its input, processing and output model, and the full documentation covers additional options, including streaming and loop-related features. Because one command cannot be assumed to fit every file and destination, no untested, universal RTMP command is presented here.

Local computer or VPS?

Running FFmpeg locally still depends on the local computer and process being available. A VPS moves that work to a remote server, but brings hosting selection and administration. The practical trade-off is where you want to manage the process, not a proven uptime advantage for one setup.

Check YouTube rules before broadcasting

A working loop setup does not establish that a video is eligible to stream or that the channel meets YouTube’s current live requirements. Review current guidance in YouTube Studio and official YouTube documentation, especially for eligibility, ingest setup, copyright and reused-content rules. Only stream material you have the right to use; repeating a video does not grant permission or guarantee monetization.

Troubleshooting the loop

  • The video plays once and stops: In OBS, reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled; it is off by default.
  • The source is blank after playback: Check whether Show nothing when playback ends is enabled. For a continuous replay, enable Loop and check the transition in OBS.
  • Playback restarts at an unexpected time: Review Restart playback when source becomes active and whether the source is being activated again as scenes change.
  • FFmpeg rejects the command or output: Check the installed build’s supported options, input stream details, output configuration and current destination requirements. FFmpeg commands are configuration-dependent.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the current ingest URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, verify the output configuration against YouTube’s current requirements, and keep the key private.
  • The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS or FFmpeg process depends on the computer and session running. A VPS or hosted cloud service moves operation away from that machine, but each brings its own hosting or service terms.
