This is a live upload protocol—not a matter of making a static .m3u8 playlist and leaving it on your computer. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 1–4-second segments; its API guide limits segments to 5 seconds and requires a rolling media playlist and correct request/response handling. A generic FFmpeg command is not established as compatible with all of those YouTube-specific requirements, so treat settings as a checklist and verify the implementation against the stream URL you receive.
What “YouTube Live playlist format” means
YouTube Live HLS ingest is a live delivery protocol. An encoder uploads media segments and repeatedly updated media playlists to a YouTube-provided HTTPS URL, using HTTP POST or PUT. A static HLS package for on-demand playback is not automatically suitable: YouTube expects a live sequence of uploads, with filenames, sequence numbers, acknowledgements and playlist updates handled as the stream proceeds.

In YouTube Live Control Room, choose HLS as the stream protocol and use the HTTPS stream URL YouTube generates. Hindi is simply the program language; no Hindi-specific container, codec, segment duration or playlist setting is documented.

Use these requirements to configure or evaluate an FFmpeg-based sender. They describe YouTube’s documented HLS ingest constraints, not a command tested against the endpoint.

Do not enable HLS byte-range output or HLS encryption. YouTube’s setup guidance disallows byte range and encryption beyond HTTPS; its API guide specifies TS media segments. HTTPS protects the upload connection, but that is not the same as encrypting HLS media segments.
Choosing codecs and audio settings for Hindi programming
H.264 or HEVC
YouTube documents H.264 and HEVC for HLS ingest. Choose a codec your encoder can produce reliably. If your stream needs embedded 608/708 captions, use H.264: the API guide supports embedded 608/708 captions with H.264, not HEVC. YouTube’s guide notes that HEVC can provide 25%–50% more compression at the same quality than H.264, but that is not a guaranteed bitrate reduction for a particular video or Hindi program.

AAC audio and spoken Hindi
Keep the Hindi program audio as one AAC track. YouTube Help gives recommended audio settings of 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo, or 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. These are platform recommendations, not language-specific requirements; match the channel layout you are actually sending.

Hindi subtitles and captions
Spoken Hindi audio and captions are separate parts of the stream. YouTube’s HLS API guide describes sending captions through separate HTTP POST requests for HLS ingestions. It also documents embedded 608/708 captions for H.264 only. Do not assume that an FFmpeg WebVTT subtitle rendition in an HLS master playlist will be accepted as a YouTube Live ingest caption track: YouTube ignores master playlists for this purpose.

Why a generic FFmpeg command is not a safe copy-and-paste answer
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer provides controls such as hls_time, hls_list_size, segment type and HTTP method; its documentation also shows -method PUT for HTTP output. Those options alone do not prove that a command follows YouTube’s complete ingest protocol. A working sender must also match YouTube’s expected media filenames and sequence numbering, update the media playlist, handle acknowledgements and responses, and respect the limit on outstanding segments.

- Uses the exact HTTPS HLS URL generated for the current YouTube Live stream.
- Uploads MPEG-TS segments and a rolling media playlist with the expected sequence and filenames.
- Uses a documented request method and handles YouTube’s response and acknowledgement behavior rather than assuming a successful local file write means the segment was accepted.
- Keeps segment duration within the 1–4-second recommendation and 5-second maximum, and never exceeds five outstanding segments.
- Muxes one supported video stream with one AAC audio track, uses a closed GOP and stays at or below 60 fps.
- Avoids byte-range output, encrypted HLS segments, fMP4 segments and master-playlist-dependent behavior.
Keep the generated URL and any stream key private. Anyone with access to stream credentials may be able to interfere with the broadcast. If you are adapting an FFmpeg workflow, consult the FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation for option behavior, then validate the uploader’s YouTube-specific request sequence against the current YouTube HLS ingestion guide.
Segment duration: latency versus stability
YouTube recommends segments of 1–4 seconds and prohibits segments longer than 5 seconds. Shorter segments may lower latency, but YouTube warns that they can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency. There is no single best duration established for every encoder, network and program; stay within the documented range and choose based on the behavior of the complete ingest path.

Common setup failures and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the upload: Confirm that you selected HLS in Live Control Room and copied the current HTTPS URL exactly. Check the HTTP method, segment names, sequence numbers and response handling in the sender.
- Segments are rejected or the playlist stalls: Check that segments are MPEG-TS, within the duration limit, and that the media playlist advances correctly. Verify that the sender is not leaving more than five segments outstanding.
- The stream starts but buffers or falls behind: Review segment duration and delivery behavior. Shorter segments can raise rebuffer risk, so do not assume that the shortest possible setting is best.
- Audio is missing or unsupported: Confirm that the audio is AAC and that only one audio track is being sent alongside video.
- Captions do not appear: Check whether you are using a caption method documented for YouTube HLS. An FFmpeg WebVTT rendition in a master playlist is not established as an accepted Live ingest caption track.
- A command works against another HTTP server but not YouTube: A generic HTTP upload example does not demonstrate YouTube compatibility. Compare its filenames, playlist updates, request handling and outstanding-segment behavior with YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
Copyright and YouTube Live rules still apply
Using FFmpeg or HLS does not change YouTube’s rules for the content being broadcast. Make sure you have the rights needed for the Hindi music, video, recordings and other material in the stream. Technical compliance with the ingest protocol does not establish that a program is eligible for monetization or that it complies with YouTube policies. Review YouTube’s current requirements in Live Control Room and its applicable policy pages before scheduling a stream.
