Looping only repeats the file: it does not keep a failed FFmpeg process, computer, or internet connection running. Those need separate monitoring and recovery.
Recommended FFmpeg settings for a 24/7 YouTube stream
For a conventional 1920×1080, 30 fps SDR source, H.264 is a broadly compatible starting codec. YouTube’s current English encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for 1080p30 H.264. A 5 Mbps example is therefore a modest baseline, not YouTube’s recommended target; use the higher recommended value when your connection and encoding setup can sustain it. Leave upload headroom and test with similar motion and audio before relying on the stream.
Do not mix bitrate values across codec rows: YouTube’s 1080p30 recommendations differ for H.264, HEVC, and AV1. Its published H.264 figures are 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. These are YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other resolutions and frame rates.
| Setting | Starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS, where supported | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. |
| Video codec | H.264 via libx264 |
YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1; confirm your FFmpeg build and ingest setup support the codec you select. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps for the illustrative 1080p30 example | This is YouTube’s H.264 minimum for 1080p30; its recommended figure is 14 Mbps. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube recommends these advanced stereo AAC settings. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Match the source and output color characteristics. |
| Other advanced video settings | Progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC | Check that your local encoder exposes the options and that they fit your source. |
YouTube supports video frame rates up to 60 fps. Higher resolution or frame rate generally calls for more bitrate and encoding capacity, so choose the matching codec, resolution, and frame-rate row in YouTube’s guidance rather than carrying over the 1080p30 example unchanged.

Loop one video indefinitely with FFmpeg
Replace input.mp4 with the local video, and replace the ingest URL and key with the values shown in YouTube Studio. The command is an illustrative configuration for a conventional 1080p30 source, not a tested command or an uninterrupted-service guarantee. It assumes an FFmpeg build with libx264 and AAC support.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
- Install or verify FFmpeg. Check your local version and build configuration, and confirm that the chosen encoders and output protocol are available.
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the output destination. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in published scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Set the input and loop options. Put
-stream_loop -1before the relevant-i. FFmpeg defines this as infinitely looping that input.-rereads a file at its native rate, which is useful when simulating a live source from a file; it is not a general setting for real-time capture. - Match output settings to the source. The sample uses 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP for two-second keyframes. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio to suit the source and YouTube target. The
veryfastpreset, 10 Mbps buffer,yuv420p, 44.1 kHz sample rate, and disabled scene-cut keyframes are illustrative FFmpeg choices, not mandatory YouTube values. - Run a full test before the broadcast. Confirm the stream appears in Live Control Room, inspect stream health, and check playback on the watch page and a mobile device. Test with comparable movement and sound to the intended content.
FFmpeg options are positional: their order determines which input or output they affect. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation if you adapt the command.

What looping does—and what it does not do
-stream_loop -1 repeats a finite input. It does not reconnect every kind of failed output, restart a crashed FFmpeg process, restore a disconnected host, or guarantee that YouTube keeps the same player session after an interruption. “24/7” therefore describes an operating setup, not a single FFmpeg flag.
- Media repetition: the input-loop option repeats the chosen file.
- Output recovery: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP example using
-f fifo -fifo_format flv,-attempt_recovery 1, and-recovery_wait_time 1to attempt recovery every second indefinitely after temporary failure. This is a documented example, not a guarantee that YouTube will preserve a session or that every error can be recovered. Read the FFmpeg full documentation and FIFO example, then test against your actual endpoint and local build. - Host and network continuity: the computer must remain available, FFmpeg must keep running, and the connection must sustain the outgoing stream. YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream and recommends leaving roughly 20% bandwidth room. Its streaming tips also recommend testing backup encoder failover.
FFmpeg protocol reconnect options documented for input protocols are not a universal output-reconnect switch. In particular, do not assume HTTP input options such as -reconnect will recover publishing to a YouTube RTMP output; see the FFmpeg protocol documentation. If uninterrupted unattended operation matters, supervise the process, alert on failure, and test the recovery and fallback behavior. Reconnection can still leave gaps.

Preflight checklist for an unattended stream
- Confirm the FFmpeg build includes the encoder and protocol you intend to use.
- Measure sustained upload capacity, not just a brief peak. Allow headroom; YouTube’s guidance says the primary plus backup stream bitrate, plus about 20%, should fit the available outbound bandwidth when applicable.
- Test a stream with similar movement and audio, and review YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Start in advance, verify the public watch page and mobile playback, and monitor the encoder-based stream while it runs.
- Exercise the backup encoder: stop the primary or disconnect its Ethernet and verify what viewers see during rollover.
- Use an external process supervisor and alerts if the machine is unattended. Make restart behavior and recovery limits visible.
- Check copyright, permissions, and YouTube policies for every looped item. A live-stream configuration does not confer rights or ensure monetization.
Playlists, archives, and long-running broadcasts
Rotating several files
A single-file loop is not a playlist system. Multiple-file or concat workflows require compatible stream parameters and careful handling of timestamps, audio continuity, and encoder restarts. Test transitions with the actual files; there is no universal one-line command that guarantees gapless playback for arbitrary mixed media.
Keeping a complete recording
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not infer from that statement that a stream running continuously beyond 12 hours will be available as one complete archive. If a complete local copy matters, arrange and test a separate recording workflow. YouTube also says monetization applies if the creator is in the YouTube Partner Program; streaming continuously does not itself establish eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does -stream_loop -1 work with a live camera input?
It is for looping an input such as a file; it does not turn a live camera feed into a repeating recording.
Can I use the sample unchanged for a 60 fps stream?
No. The example’s frame rate and GOP are for 30 fps. Recalculate the GOP for the frame rate you choose and use YouTube’s matching bitrate guidance.
Will a stream over 12 hours definitely be saved as one archive?
YouTube’s cited setup guidance only states automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, so it does not establish that outcome for longer runs.
