A playlist does not by itself guarantee gapless joins: mismatched streams, inaccurate timing, or an encoder that cannot sustain real time can cause visible or audible faults.
How FFmpeg concatenates a playlist
The concat demuxer reads a text playlist and presents its files sequentially as if their packets had been muxed together. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so each file follows the previous one. It does not decode and normalize unlike clips, so the inputs need matching streams, codecs, time bases, and relevant stream properties. Unequal audio and video lengths can produce gaps. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation (rolling master documentation; options can vary by FFmpeg build and version).
What must match
Check stream count and ordering, video and audio codecs, time bases, dimensions, pixel formats, frame rates, audio layout and sample rate, and timestamps. The demuxer’s baseline requirement is that files have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If they do not, stream copy is not a fix; decode and re-encode to a common output format instead.
Why duration metadata matters
FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to calculate where the next file begins. Incorrect or missing duration information can shift timestamps and create artifacts at joins. A playlist duration directive can override the reported duration, but use it only after verifying actual media timing; an arbitrary override can create a different timestamp error.

Build the concat playlist
Save a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat. The format identifier must be the exact first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
Use paths relative to the playlist file or provide correctly escaped paths. Filenames with spaces or special characters must follow FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping rules in its concat documentation. The demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1 and rejects unsafe paths and directives. Setting it to 0 accepts any filename; only do so for a playlist you control and have checked.

Choose stream copy or re-encoding
Use stream copy only for compatible sources
Copying packets avoids the quality loss and processing cost of re-encoding, but it preserves the sources’ stream parameters and cadence. Use it only if the clips already match and their codecs and container are suitable for the YouTube ingest you intend to use. It cannot make mixed resolutions, codecs, time bases, frame rates, or audio layouts uniform.
Re-encode when the playlist needs normalization
If sources differ, decode and re-encode them to a consistent 3840×2160 progressive, 60 fps output with a single chosen video codec and consistent audio. Confirm your FFmpeg build includes the encoder you select, and that your CPU or GPU can sustain 4K60 at real-time speed. A command that works for one encoder or source set may not work for another; hardware encoder option names and rate-control behavior are encoder-specific.

YouTube’s 4K60 live settings
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 2026, gives different bitrate targets by ingest codec. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or internet connection will sustain the stream. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings before a broadcast because guidance can change.
| Setting | H.264 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| 4K/2160p at 60 fps video bitrate | 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended | 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended |
| Rate control | CBR recommended | |
| Keyframe interval | Every 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | |
- Frame rate and size: up to 60 fps; 4K output is 3840×2160 progressive.
- Transport: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s listed stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps.
- SDR color: Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth in YouTube’s listed advanced settings.
- Latency: YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K uses normal latency.
At 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval is 120 frames. If an encoder expresses GOP length in frames, 120 is the nominal starting point. Confirm the selected encoder’s option semantics and actual keyframe cadence; scene-cut behavior or variable-frame-rate inputs can affect it. Do not carry a 1080p or 30 fps command’s bitrate or GOP values over to 4K60 without adjusting them.

Prepare, send, and test the live output
- Inspect every clip. Probe the files and compare stream count and order, codecs, time bases, dimensions, pixel formats, frame rates, audio layout and sample rate, and durations. Resolve incompatibilities or bad metadata before relying on packet concatenation.
- Write and verify the playlist. Put
ffconcat version 1.0on the first line, list files in playback order, and check paths and quoting. Usedurationonly when you have verified the correct media duration. - Set the output deliberately. Select stream copy only for compatible inputs; otherwise normalize by decoding and re-encoding. Set 3840×2160, 60 fps, the intended ingest codec, its matching bitrate target, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Select an audio codec and settings supported by the ingest route.
- Make playback real time. Configure the input and output workflow so FFmpeg emits at the intended wall-clock cadence rather than racing through the playlist. Looping behavior and option placement depend on the FFmpeg version and input arrangement; a loop flag alone does not guarantee an endless, gapless live feed.
- Connect through YouTube Studio. Copy the RTMPS server address and stream key provided in YouTube’s live setup into your streaming configuration. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Rehearse with a representative sample. Test clips with similar motion and audio to the intended broadcast. Watch the joins for black frames, freezes, timestamp jumps, and audio gaps, and confirm YouTube detects 2160p60 and reports healthy ingest. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health during it.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Black frame, freeze, or decoder error at a join | Input streams differ, or a source has damaged or incompatible packets. | Compare stream properties and test each transition. Normalize incompatible files with a consistent decode/re-encode workflow. |
| Audio gap or audio continuing after picture changes | Audio and video stream durations differ, or audio layouts and timestamps are inconsistent. | Inspect audio and video timing separately; align or normalize the sources before concatenating. |
| Timestamp jump or irregular pacing | Incorrect or unavailable duration metadata, time-base mismatch, or variable-rate timing. | Verify actual media timing and stream time bases. Add a duration override only when its value is known to be correct. |
| Stream does not reach 2160p60 | Output size or frame rate was not set as intended, or YouTube has not detected the configured output. | Check the encoder output and YouTube Studio’s detected resolution and frame rate during a rehearsal. |
| Dropped frames or encoder falls behind | The encoder or upload connection cannot sustain the selected 4K60 settings. | Check encoder speed and sustained upload headroom against the chosen codec’s recommended bitrate. Lowering the output target may be necessary if the system cannot sustain it. |
| Ingest errors or unstable connection | Wrong server/key, unsupported codec configuration, or network interruption. | Recheck the current YouTube Studio RTMPS details, encoder compatibility, and stream-health status; never expose the stream key. |
| Stream is not low latency | 4K/2160 does not offer YouTube’s low-latency option. | Plan for normal latency at 4K, or decide whether a lower output resolution is more important than 4K. |
Or let it run in the cloud
