FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options are not a general reconnect switch for an RTMP or RTMPS stream being published to YouTube Live. For temporary output failures, FFmpeg documents recovery through its FIFO muxer. First confirm the endpoint and stream key, capture what FFmpeg does during the drop, and check the stream’s state in YouTube Live Control Room. These steps describe documented mechanisms, not a guarantee that every outage or YouTube session can be recovered.
Why -reconnect may not restore your YouTube stream
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_delay_max in its HTTP protocol section. The documentation describes HTTP connection and stream behavior; it does not make these options a universal recovery mechanism for a separate RTMP(S) publishing output. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

If your input is an HTTP stream, HTTP reconnect options may matter for that input, depending on option placement and your FFmpeg build. That still does not establish recovery of the output connection to YouTube. Input looping and output recovery are separate: replaying source content cannot, on its own, recreate a failed publishing connection.
Use FFmpeg’s documented output-recovery pattern
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation provides an example for streaming to an RTMP server during a temporary network outage, with recovery attempts every second indefinitely. The relevant output-side options are -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1. This is an illustrative documentation example, not a guarantee that YouTube will accept every reconnect or preserve the same live-event state. Check that your installed build supports the options.

The destination above is a placeholder from the FFmpeg example, not a YouTube ingest address. Replace the input, maps, codecs, destination, and credentials to match your setup. Use the current stream URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and never publish or share a real stream key. The FIFO example’s -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 setting also means packet handling during an outage involves a trade-off; buffering and dropped packets can affect what viewers receive.

Check YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key
YouTube’s RTMPS workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Copy the current values from the stream’s settings rather than substituting an endpoint from an FFmpeg example. RTMPS is YouTube’s secure extension to RTMP; your encoder must support the protocol you select. See YouTube’s RTMPS help page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- For an SSL error, check that the URL uses the correct
rtmpsprotocol and server. YouTube advises specifying port 443 if the URL is otherwise correct and you are troubleshooting an SSL error. - For a connection timeout, check the server URL and protocol, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. Redact it from logs, screenshots, and any command you share.
Diagnose the failure before changing several settings
- Save the evidence. Keep the exact FFmpeg command with the key redacted, version and build information, and log lines immediately before and after the outage. Note whether FFmpeg keeps running, reports an output or muxer error, or exits. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains how inputs and outputs are specified as URLs.
- Check the YouTube stream. Compare the FFmpeg log with the stream status and preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the current ingest URL, protocol, and key there.
- Separate input from output. Determine whether the source stopped, the encoder or muxer failed, or the output connection dropped. An input loop addresses what FFmpeg reads; it does not prove that the publishing connection can recover.
- Apply the relevant recovery layer. If FFmpeg remains running, adapt the FIFO output-recovery pattern where appropriate. If the process has exited, a process supervisor can relaunch it, but that is a different mechanism and does not fix a wrong key, unsupported transport, or continuing network fault.
- Test deliberately. After checking logs and YouTube’s stream state, test the setup during a controlled interruption before relying on it for a critical broadcast. The result depends on your FFmpeg build, command, network behavior, and YouTube’s state.
Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure
| Layer | What it addresses | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery | Attempts recovery of the RTMP output during temporary failures while FFmpeg continues processing. | When the process remains active. Check recovery interval, buffering and packet-drop behavior, build compatibility, and whether YouTube accepts the reconnect. |
| Process supervisor or restart mechanism | Relaunches FFmpeg after the process exits. | When the process terminates. It does not repair invalid credentials, unsupported transport, or a persistent network failure; test the deployment you use. |
The recovery interval of one second in FFmpeg’s documented example is a configured attempt interval, not a measured success rate or a promise of recovery within one second.
